Carlos was awesome! He always showed up when he said he would, his price is very reasonable and i felt very comfortable with him in our house alone while we were at work! He did a major kitchen/bath remodel for us on our very old house which could have been a nightmare but he was able to clean up old wiring and install new in a timely, cost effective manor. He will be our go to electrician in the future!

Eduardo and his team did a great job of turning my half bath into a full bath with a standup shower. I really appreciated being able to turn to his team for advice and guidance throughout the process and rely on their expertise in making the right decisions. It was also easy to discuss my own specific ideas and and have them come out looking great. Any miscommunication was always quickly resolved. Things will definitely take longer than you expect, so best to allot extra time, but in the end, it turned out exactly how I wanted. The tile-work in particular is fantastic, and everyone one his team is great to work with! I'm very pleased with the final result, and would be happy to work with Boston Best Construction on future projects.

I hired Clean Remodel to remove popcorn ceilings and some walks throughout my home, and to demo my kitchen and remove tiles and a bath surround from my bathroom. From beginning to end, they were professional, communicative without fail, and pleasant to work with. The price was reasonable, and there were no hidden costs. The two teams (demo and popcorn removal, and plasterers and painters) were respectful, clean, and nice. I was working remotely much of the time, and you couldn't want nicer people in your home. They did a great job, and a great cleanup at the end. They went above and beyond. I highly recommend them. Enrique, Kevin, Jose, Ever, Jorge, Riva, Nelson, and Anderson...Did I get all your names right? Thank you for a great job!

We hired Ely and Daniel on 2nd Aug for a converting a half bath to a full bath since my grand mother was in town and couldn't climb the stairs. They Estimated the work to be two weeks. We paid half the amount upfront. Fast forward 3 months. During that time i made some changes to the design to which they demanded 500 more to which i agreed. 7th November Work is still not completed and no response from either Ely or Daniel. If you are planning to hire them make sure you put a completion date on the contract. My grand mother will be leaving this month since the shower was not completed on time. I had a new born at my house during that time so i was busy and trusted them to finish it, but ultimately getting tired of hearing BS for 3 months i had to hire another professional.

This is the first time I hired a carpenter for breaking two closets and making a opening between kitchen and living room (it is a baring wall) He is easy to communicate. Came, check and gave quote. from next day they started work and finished within 2 days. Before left they cleaned everything properly and also put some salt on my stairs. My wife and I was amazed. Thanks I got them. I am planning to do some other carpentry works.

Although we haven't started our kitchen remodel project yet I'm very happy so far with the experience and I know this project will turn out great. My initial meeting with Brandon was excellent, he showed up on time ( I know never happens) and he was extremely knowledgeable and had some great ideas. We then met with the designer they work with and she is great. They both made great suggestions while keeping our budget in mind, they never pushed expensive options or ideas. We had a kitchen design back in two days! I fee like I'm getting a great value for the money we are spending. They weren't the cheapest but they also we not the most expensive price we received. Will update when the project is done.

Adonias was very easy to work with. He is friendly, creative, and flexible. He has a very busy company, so sometimes my projects took longer than expected, but he is good about communicating. Eagle7 remodeled two bathrooms for me (I will upload pictures after I finish cleaning and organizing them). They took out two fiberglass shower/tub units, built a new tub with tile surround and a tiled walk-in shower with glass door. They replaced sinks and countertops, replaced flooring (tile in one, vinyl plank in the other), repaired some plumbing, replaced fan/light combos, and built out walls where needed. In addition, Adonias and his crew helped with a few extra requests as they came up, without complaint. We were updating most of our house this month, so there were many contractors in and out, a dog, kids, and general chaos. The crew took it all in stride, they were patient and worked around our schedule. Prices were very reasonable, and they worked with me to think through what could be salvaged/reused to minimize costs. Adonias also sourced materials as needed, not overbuying or upcharging. Highly recommend Eagle7.

I have nothing but positive feedback for Jon at JL Masonry & Remodeling. I was looking for a professional mason to spot repoint a large brick staircase for my rental property and replace 5 cracked and crumbling bluestone treads and secure the wrought iron railings. I was also looking for a fair price obviously. Finally, I was looking for prompt service as this property is a rental and the condition of the stairs had become a tripping hazard for tenants and guests. Jon delivered on all fronts. When I posted the job description I had several quotes come back from other masons. Some were ridiculous but there were a few that were competitive with Jon's quote. I decided on Jon because his reviews were the most positive. Prior to providing the quote he visited the job site on his own to size up the job. After receiving what I felt was a reasonable price I just wanted to ensure certain areas of the staircase were included in his estimate so I asked if he'd mind meeting me in person to discuss in detail the scope of work covered by the estimate. He was more than happy to meet me and he put my worries at ease. Judging someone's character can be difficult but after meeting Jon in person I felt I was dealing with an honest guy, so we shook hands and I provided a deposit. The job was completed in several stages due to the number of steps to be replaced and different areas needing attention. There was not much downtime in between stages, which I appreciated as Jon knew several families live on the premises and need access to the staircase. After each stage I viewed the progress and provided input on some minor concerns. Jon was not put off or offended and took my feedback in stride as a professional and actually seemed to care about my concerns and how to best complete the job. I am very satisfied with the completed work product and the overall experience I had with Jon at JL Masonry & Remodeling. I have several properties and if I need masonry work in the future Jon will be my first call and I wouldn't hesitate referring him, in fact, I already did! Thanks Jon!

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
