Fantastic! I had been trying to DIY the installation of an IKEA bathroom sink and had gotten as far as I could on my new homeowner skills. The snag was connecting IKEA's supplied drain pipes to proper American plumbing. Eric came in on short notice, late at night, and was kind enough to teach me a few plumbing tricks along the way - which was absolutely what I needed! Pleasure to work with and happy to hire again.

I initially hired Bob to install a bathroom exhaust fan. While he was there I ended having him also install 2 medicine cabinets with lights on top and repair a doorbell that wasn’t working. He installed and fixed everything and I’m quite happy with his work. I plan to continue using Bob for future electrical work.

My sink had been clogged so I poured Zep Liquid Heat in the drain. That cleared my clogged sink, but then it started to back up into my tub. I googled plumbers and Thumbtack came up so I completed the mini survey and Jeff Comeau responded immediately with a quote less than Drain Works and he was at my house within the hour. Jeff cleared my tub drain, made sure my sink drain was all cleaned out then he checked my basement to make sure there was no water leaking down. Needless to say I will definitely contact Jeff in the future for any plumbing issues I may have. Jeff was quick, efficient and friendly!

I have had many bad experiences with plumbers, this was not one! Mark did everything he promised in a professional, efficient and courteous manner. He removed and replaced a water heater that was in a very difficult spot on the second floor of my home, he took the old rotted water heater out with out one bit of mess or disruption to my home. I will not hesitate to use Mark again and I recommend him highly.

Paul was really fantastic. He listened to exactly what we wanted in our bathroom, and found the faucets that both were beautiful and fit our budget! We were so pleased we hired him right away again to replace some electrical outlets and a light in our laundry room. I almost wish there were more things we need done around the house!

Lou did an amazing job on our bathroom and finished attic. He was quick to respond, and started immediately. The upstairs attic especially was not an easy task and they did a great job. (I'm so glad I didn't have to do it!) Will definitely remember him when I'm needing more work again. :)

Art was fabulous! He just finished tiling our bathroom with floor to ceiling glass mosaics, and he did a beautiful job. He has an incredible work ethic. As soon as he showed up he started working and worked straight through for hours, and when the job was done he left no trace behind. I highly recommend him.

Stella turned an existing upstairs bed room into a bathroom. Work was done well overall, and it was a pleasure working with Erik. I especially appreciate his ability to reply to e-mails and texts within minutes, something that most other contractors I vetted for the job couldn't manage in days, or in some cases, not a all. Stella was very helpful in the planning process, and managed all the permitting/inspection work with ease. I would definitely recommend them.

I just had my kitchen and bathroom fully gutted and remodeled by BBC. I'm very happy with the outcome of it all, and would definitely hire Eduardo for my next project or recommend to anyone in need of a great contractor! He was always very fast to answer any of my doubts. His crew has an amazing work ethic. They treated my house with care and respect. Everything from the materials they used to the appliances I bought was kept organized. The job site and my house was kept clean every work day. Eduardo was able to complete the project under the deadline. Now I have a beautiful kitchen and a stunning bathroom. I am super satisfied! Thank you Eduardo!

I hired Latham to cut a few holes in the walls for plumbers to find and fix a leaky pipe. In addition, he installed wall mounted shelving for me (RAKKS). He had never installed the Rakks system before but that wasn't a problem as the instructions were easy. The standards were level and aligned so I'm pretty happy with the work. I will hire again.

We have now used Troy for several projects which include restoration, tiling of floors, painting inside walls, and painting exterior of house. In each case we were well pleased with his work and impressed both with his handling of the projects and their end results. For the first project (painting the interior walls), Troy took the extra effort to prep the walls by removing excess wall paper and backing, patched and skim coated. After painting the walls they looked beautiful - smooth, clean lines, damage spots no longer visible. The exterior paint job was also done well. Again, Troy took the time to prepare the surfaces - scraping shingles and trim work, fixing / repairing shingles, finding the right primer (due to the poor condition of the shingles and old peeling paint). And again, with a coat of paint and clean lines around the trim the house looks vibrant - the neighbors loved it and commented on the good job he did. Troy also tiled the bathroom and kitchen floors which look great. The projects were performed in a timely manner, the areas kept clean as Troy didn't just do a job but took ownership and managed the projects. Once Troy took the project I could relax knowing that any issues that arose would be handled, I would be kept informed with updates and timeframes, and in the end impressed.

Marcio installed a Marmoleum floating tile floor in our kitchen. Although the project took a bit longer than expected, Marcio came back early in the morning the very next day to finish the job for no extra charge. The floor came out great. Marcio and his team were professional and responsive to our requests. I would recommend them to anyone seeking home improvement help.

Marcos and Carlos just completed replacement of a gas water heater in our attic. It was obvious from his initial visit that he is an consumate professional in his technical abilities, work ethic and respect for homeowner and their property. He was exactly on time, covered all floors and stairs with drop cloths and worked in an extremely efficient and friendly manner. His invoice reflected exactly the estimate price, quite reasonable for the quality work. We would highly recommend Carlos and Marcos for all your plumbing needs.

My husband and I interviewed four different contractors for the remodeling of our kitchen. Gilson was very professional and easy to talk with. Where this was our first time having a big job done we didn't know what to expect. Gilson and his crew made the transition from gutting the kitchen to finishing the kitchen remodel as smooth as possible All of the people that work for him are exceptional and very professional. We can't say enough about their work ethic and professionalism. We highly recommend GF Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
