I'm an adult student. David has been working with me since 2009. He's amazing. He has me playing songs I never thought I'd be able to play. He has a real knack for getting to the heart of the matter when it comes to musical expression on the guitar. He's great. Hire him!

We feel so very lucky to have Kris's talents available to us. Where else could you find someone who has toured and played with well-known drummers and bands so close to home? Our son has taken his playing to the next level with Kris and learned new skills and gotten familiar with the different styles of drumming. Kris also passes along his extensive technical knowledge so that students learn to maintain their sets themselves. Besides being a true professional, Kris is a wonderful person whose teaching style and over-all personality makes learning from him both fun and enjoyable. He loves what he does and it shows!

Tom was absolutely outstanding to work with from beginning to end! We couldn't have selected a better DJ/ musician to work with. From offering suggestions in the beginning on songs to playing live music at the wedding. Our friends and family haven't stopped talking about him! If you want to get everyone out on the dance floor he is your man! He was so great to work with and very responsive! Some people at the wedding couldn't believe it was him singing when they heard him! Definitely book him for your wedding you will not be disappointed! He helped make our day even more perfect!

Mike was an excellent DJ and MC at my 40th birthday dance party in Franklin, MA. He accommodated all of my music and scheduling requests, and charged a reasonable price. Many of my guests complimented him during and after the party. If I were to hire a DJ in the future, I would certainly contact Mike.

What an amazing night we had listening to the wonderful songs so elegantly played by the band and sung by this incredibly talented artist Gabriela Martina. I would recommend that you hire this band immediately for your event!!! I listened to many demo tracks from local arts for our corporate event in Boston and Gabriela and her band members stood out immediately. They were the perfect choice. Throughout my time dealing with Gabriela, her professionalism and response time were fantastic and was so easy to work with. Our guests were extremely complimentary of the band’s talent and song selection. This group has a bright future!

Brandy did a great job performing at my wedding. I received so many compliments from my guests about them. They heeded all of my requests ranging from song selection to sound volume and vocal style. Perhaps the biggest testament to their performance was the sight of my 4 year old nephew rocking out to the band's music, despite never having expressed any dance inclination previously. It was an astounding revelation, even to his parents.

In my role at Berklee College of Music, I see/hear a lot of music. I happened to check out The New Review this week -- this band is the straight-up, no B.S., *real deal,* hands down. Nine-piece mad-tight band. Great musicians and excellent vocalists making a completely fun atmosphere. Nothing at all against DJs, but there's something hella-special about singers and players who love what they're doing to make your body move, and this band does it like few others. They packed the place, and even people with too little room to dance couldn't help bopping their heads. If you're looking for a band that feels the joy of playing and gives it to a whole crowd, The New Review is it. Absolutely "pure funk, uncut funk, the bomb."

I loved everything about having Loving Cup as the band for my wedding. Working with Colleen was such a pleasure. I am not a very organized person and she took care of everything. I felt like every little detail was completely taken care of. Details I would never even of thought of. I felt completely at ease with Colleen taking care of everything. My wedding even started super late and many guests don't even remember it not starting on time because the band handled everything so well and everything transitioned so smoothly. She really understood my husband and myself, what we liked, and our style. The music was perfect! We loved our wedding but the highlight for us and our guests was Loving Cup. A year later people still talk about the music at our wedding and that it was still the best wedding they have been to, primarily because of the music. I look forward to the day I have an event that warrants me hiring a band again. I would hire Loving Cup again and again. There is not a better band out there to hire for your event because they are extremely talented, sound amazingly great, are super organized, and completely care about making your experience what you have hoped it to be.

As a composer, collaborating with Dennis Shafer continues to be a great opportunity to work with an incredibly well-rounded, sophisticated, and poetic musician. After soliciting my musical intentions, such an impeccably pictorial and wonderfully sincere performance of my music could only have arisen from someone so wholly invested not only in his craft, but in a greater concept of what music can mean. I am eager to be again composing music for Dennis to perform. In the spirit of his teaching philosophy, he’s opened my eyes to the thrill of collaborative work. Composers can be recluses, and I needed that eye-opener. His availability, willingness, and capacity to clarify the challenges of writing well for the saxophone makes me a better composer. A chance to work or study with Dennis in any capacity should not be passed up. He is a renaissance man and a worldbeater.

Java Jive is the band you MUST hire for your wedding or other event. They are extremely professional and incredibly easy to deal with - available quickly and easily by phone and email. Don was a pleasure to work with, and his experience shows through his careful attention to detail in how you want your event to go. The band is AMAZING, and your guests will want to dance and do anything except sit down!! Their repertoire is impressively extensive, and they can learn anything. We absolutely loved them at our wedding, as did our guests, young and old. We had the pleasure of hearing them perform and two prior non-wedding events, and every time, guests have left saying, "wow that band was amazing!" You simply must hire them - they did a fantastic job!

David: “I had SEVERAL people, dozens, tell me that the band was awesome which I knew would happen but many people said “I feel like I’m at a rock concert - I am so into the music.” Just awesome. Everyone spoke about every part of the band too. “The horn guys are amazing” “That drummer is SICK!” “That’s one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard live” (Billy Jean - I mean come on - that guitar bit at the end was just mind blowing), and on and on. And as far as the singers connecting with the audience, it was unreal. I mean unreal. They made every person feel special. I know I shouldn’t but I felt proud for picking Downtown Fever! -Julie and Tyson Schoezel”

    About

Transcending the boundaries of genre, Insigniya has hit the ground running since the band’s start in January 2009. Taking influence from a vast range of musicians, Insigniya has been breaking down barriers in creating original music that cannot be classified simply as jazz, rock, or funk. Insigniya is centered on the concept of channeling a special energy through an audience, creating a feeling of freedom and self empowerment, while giving people sounds to bob their heads and move their bodies to. This energy is found full force at shows, and getting it recorded is the ultimate goal when the band is in the studio. With a constantly growing loyal fan base, Insigniya is attracting more and more people to shows, each providing a senses-saturating experience full of high energy. In their third year, the band is unleashing their unique electro-funk-jazz sonic explorations throughout the northeast, having performed at venues, such as The Middle East Downstairs (Boston), Nectar's (Burlington, VT), Sullivan Hall (NYC), and Cafe Campus (Montreal, QC). In Summer 2011, the group made their debut on the festival circuit, performing at festivals, such as StrangeCreek & Wormtown (MA), Disc Jam (MA), Camp Coldbrook (MA), The Big Up (NY), Liberate (VT), Bella Terra (NY), Evolvefest (NJ), Heads In Harmony (ME), Magnetic Gathering (NH), and Lesphestival (NY). Insigniya is ever-increasingly devoted to creating a unique music that pushes the envelope in all genres, while sharing a collective love for music, positive progression, and good times with the masses.

    About

Talented individual artists have united to form one of the most sought-after bands around. This gives our clients the benefit of both male and female vocalists, resulting in high versatility. The end result: high energy performance and pure entertainment. In addition to vocalists, the band’s foundation is comprised of keyboards, bass, guitar, drums and a horn section (upon request). Ceremonial music, cocktail hour music, emcee, etc. are also available. Experience counts! With more than 15 years of performing experience, one of the most important factors the band knows to be important is that weddings and other events require correct song selection in order to create the right atmosphere. The Pulse Of Boston’s variety of music covers every genre and period, from the 50s to the present. This, along with the ability to “read” an audience, helps to set the mood for the perfect event. The band specializes in connecting with the audience and creating a “personal touch” with the crowds at every event. About

We’d love to provide fun music for your wedding celebration! We have been fortunate enough to play live, acoustic music (bluegrass, swing, roots music, old time) at numerous weddings throughout New England since 2006. In regards to music for the big day, we have found that the following formula works well for most folks: * Half an hour of mellow acoustic “seating” music prior to ceremony Processional and postlude (MP3 samples are here on our website) * 45 minutes of acoustic music amongst your guests during the cocktail reception * Fun dancing music after dinner for the reception You can use our PA for toasts and announcements. We also encourage folks to make an iPod mix of music to play during dinner, and fun dancing after we perform. (You and your friends might also love Prince of Hip Hop, or have some special songs you’d like to dance for another 30-45 minutes before the night ends!) We’d be happy to answer any questions you may have, and we provide a cost estimate. We typically book/quote events six to eight months in advance, so if you would like to secure your date, please get in touch! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
