I booked the project with OSA just one week before I moved in my new condo. There are plenty of jobs needed to be done, like install all appliances, replace old vanity, replace all old valves, replace new toilet, install new lights, put floor tile and wall tile in my bathroom, and so on. Thankfully, OSA finished all projects before the day I moved in with high work quality, I really appreciate it. Also, they are very trustful, I gave my home key to them so they can come any time to do the work. I would definitely recommend OSA to all my friends who needs to do electricity, plumb job for their house or condo.

Manny and workers completed their work within the time period quoted. The patch work of the old wood flooring was very good. They have very heavy duty equipment to do a great job. Even their sanding was pretty much dustless. They had tar paper to cut through before sanding the wood floor and they did an excellent job doing that and it was fast. They were in and out with confidence.

Only if we could give 10 STARS!! We are beyond satisfied with the job Lan and his associates provided. In the process of our kitchen remodeling we needed the new hardwood floor installed in the kitchen and the rest of the floors in downstairs refinished. Lan was one of the six floor contractors we met (yes we did our part!) and from the very first time we met we could tell he was through and professional. He took time to examine our almost 100-year-old kitchen, measured and re-measured, and even removed some of the existing thresholds to see what's under the existing floor (and, of course, he put them all back). His quote was not the least expensive one but the based on what other contractors promised and the work Lan provided, we had the BEST deal of all. Communication was outstanding as well; We had more than a month before the job started and during that time we requested a few more things (e.g., finishing one of the staircases, etc.). Every time we text'd him Lan returned text/call immediately. Same thing while they worked at our house for 5 days; he text'd 15 min before arrival every morning and kept us posted on their progress. When you are dealing with a multiple contractors (we had an electrician, plumbers, HVAC person and his crew at the same time one point!) you truly appreciate that. Lan and his crew removed our old floor on the first day. We had at least FOUR layers of floors (a combination of laminate, vinyl, and mixture of different wood and who knows what!!). Not the easy, clean job but when they left the area was left surprisingly clean. On the second day, they started installation of new floor and started sanding the other rooms. The way Lan made a flawless transition from the dining room (again almost 100-year-old) to the kitchen was speechless. He removed the old floor from the edge of the dining room and installed new wood continuing all the way to the kitchen. Other contractors suggested placing a threshold, which would have been an easier for them to do but not what we wanted. We now have beautiful continuous floors as if they were there from the beginning thanks to Lan and his crews. The rest of the days, they applied 3 poly coats: one layer a day. Before applying the next coat they buffed and vacuumed the floor each time. We were constantly looking inside from the windows (must been pretty annoying for them ;-) and always very impressed how hard they worked. They barely stopped for the lunch. And at the end, we have a gorgeous floors and not a single trash left! Again, we cannot stress how impressed and happy we are with the work Lan and his crews provided. We are certainly spreading the words!!

Steve and his co-worker, Phil, did a terrific job. I could not be more pleased with everything about the service he provided. This includes his competitive pricing, timely performance, attention to detail and problem-solving when adjustments had to be made to accommodate an irregular basement floor and fieldstone foundation wall, and perhaps most of all working in difficult conditions and extreme heat. I cannot say enough about how pleased I was. I look forward to his continued involvement throughout the renovation of our 160-year home.

Thank you Stella Construction. I had the company remodel my kitchen. New hard wood floors, counter tops, cabinets, tile back splash, window casings, baseboard, and paint. The back splash now absolutely compliments the counter tops and cabinets. Everything came out perfect!

We hired Quincy's Floor Care for a two day job to refinish a wood bedroom floor. The floors came out great! The crew was detail oriented. Destiny was very responsive and easy to work with. Work was completed as promised for the quoted amount. The crew was running late on both days so you need to allow for extra time over the stated arrival. Also, although I love the way the floors came out, I would have liked to have received options for the type of polyurathane used (satin vs. gloss) because my other floors have a gloss finish. Overall, I would recommend this company.

I hired Felipe to build closets in two bedrooms and patch/refinish the pine flooring on the second floor of my house. I got several quotes and chose FW Home Improvement because the quote was very reasonable and they were available to start right away. Felipe and his partner were very courteous and professional. Felipe responded to my emails and texts promptly. They worked extremely hard every day and got the work done right on schedule including a couple of extra little jobs I added. There were a few small details that were left undone, but overall I found their work a very good value for the price. I plan to use Felipe for some additional work that I have planned for my house.

Our 8-townhouse complex in South Boston needed a complete repainting of the entire exterior in the summer of 2015. Originally built in 2007, our exteriors were peeling and fading - both the painted portions and our wood varnished entry foyers. We approached Todd in the winter and he came out to inspect and give us a quote for the entire job. He also gave us an estimate on the time the work would take and when he could do our job. A small deposit and signed contract was all that was needed to secure our project. He stayed in touch with us throughout the spring and was always quick to respond to our emails as a date to start our project was established. Over the 3 weeks he was working on our project Todd helped us make informed decisions on the paint colors and wood varnish. His product knowledge was very good and his background as a carpenter was also very helpful as a few of our exterior panels needed replacing too. Todd's team of worker's were also courteous and friendly. During the 3 weeks, Todd kept us informed about our project and how it was progressing. His communication was good and he was honest about all expectations. The few changes he made were explained ahead of time so there were no surprises. He held to his initial quote and all 8 homeowners were very satisfied with Todd's work overall and we all thought he gave us a fair price and delivered a quality service! We'll be contacting him again in 8 years.

I hired Daniel and his company for changing the floor(From Carpet to Wooden) and overall house painting. He came and visited my place and provided the estimates. We both went to Home Depot store and picked all the required materials. He initially committed to complete all the work with in 5 days and he completed within the time frame. He used to start the work everyday at 7 AM and work until 6 PM. He is economical, professional and punctual. He did great job in doing the painting(Walls, Trim and Ceiling) and finishing was really great. I strongly recommend Ortega Brothers for General contracting.

Andrew & Mario were hired to sand, buff, and refinish (we opted for 3 coats) our hardwood floors in September 2017. It was ~1600 square feet. We also had a part of the floor that had bad warpage and they replaced some of the wood for us. We highly recommend these two and are happy to serve as references. Mario is extremely responsive and the duo always showed up to work when they said so. (We know it's a common problem for contractors to be hard to track down, but not Mario & Andrew! Very reliable.) They are very honest and knowledgeable and will make your hardwood look great, and at a great price! See my attached photos of the result. We opted for satin finish.

Jose and his partner did an exceptional job on removing my kitchen tiles, cleaning up the subfloor, and installing the prefinished wood. What separates these guys from the others I’ve worked with is their honesty, value, and reliability. They showed up exactly when they said they would and backed up any further materials they needed to buy by providing receipts. In the end, the quality of their work was fantastic. If you live in the Somerville, Medford, Arlington, or surrounding Boston area, I highly suggest you hire these guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
