Sara's Cooking provided a lovely Easter dinner for my family of 8, including an appetizer tray, full service of two courses, and a buffet of finger pastries for dessert. The service was friendly and extremely helpful and the food was delicious. I would definitely book Sara's Cooking again!

Few are the people that can produce large amounts of food in very high quality, with extreme organization, and most importantly with real passion for what they are doing. These people are called artists and Daniel is among them. We couldn't taste the food or talk to Daniel face to face before our event, which was difficult for us, but the moment we met him and his wonderful crew of people taking over a crowded, old-school kitchen and preparing everything fresh and from scratch, on the spot, all our worries were gone. The food was wonderful, tasty, and generous in quantity, our guests could not stop commenting on how delicious everything was. Daniel's staff was incredibly friendly and professional, even setting up full service bar stations for us which was a big hit. We highly recommend Daniel and would love to ask for his services in our next event. Thank you Daniel for an amazing evening and for all the love you put into the food for our wedding!

Like many brides, I began the tedious process of searching for a caterer for our upcoming wedding. I spoke to several catering companies that resided in the Boston area but their pricing for one night was far too expensive considering our wedding was going to span three full days for all guests. I continued to search for caterers and came across J&L Catering, which also happened to be local to me. Our first phone conversation went amazingly. John really understood my vision and was able to provide all the elements we needed for our three days (raw bar, carving station, and lobster bake). The pricing for all three days was fantastic. I was nervous that in order to meet such a great price, perhaps the food quality would be lacking. Boy was I wrong! We had our tasting of each of our three menus and everything was delicious, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. My fiancé and I were blown away with how amazing the food tasted. We could not have been more pleased with the final outcome for our wedding weekend. Our guests haven’t stop talking about how great the food was. And besides taste and price, the last element you hope for is good customer service. John and his team have this in spades. Every time I had a question about the menu or what to rent for plates, etc.; I always received a prompt phone call or email with a reply. As a bride trying to plan their big day, it is so nice to have someone there to quickly answer your questions. By the end of our long planning process and wedding weekend, we really felt like John and his team was a part of our family. That is nearly impossible to find this day and age. If you are looking to book a caterer, look no further than J&L Caterers. You will not be disappointed!

BEST wedding dinner ever. William came to our house for a food tasting and we were hooked. All of the appetizers and both of our dinner selections were incredible. William is very personable and understands the financial costs of a wedding. He will make suggestions as he sees fit and do anything within his power to help you stay on budget. Our guests raved about the food and even had fun with William's staff. We will recommend William and his team to anyone looking to cater an event.

So glad I hired Hostess for my wedding! I initially signed because of the low price relative to other options, and throughout our meetings it became more and more clear what a huge value the company provides. Donna was my main contact and was such a ray of sunshine! They both took away any worry I had about catering, decoration, really the "event" part of the wedding at all. The reception venue definitely needed some sprucing up, and Hostess catering came together as a pretty full-service party planner. They bought decorations based on my budget as well as using those I brought and decorated the venue so it looked amazing! They took a lot of moving pieces and made them into a very smooth event.

Lori Rizzo was a pleasure to work with from the first second of our conversation through many twists & turns in the catering job (including 3 changes of venue) up until the excellent food and service she provided at the event. This was for a large anniversary party of 300+. Lori helped us design a delicious and cost-effective menu, working with our budget but putting the satisfaction of the guests as a top priority as well. She provided excellent and plentiful appetizers and desserts for our guests. Through the various venue changes, we had to keep altering the menu, but she was always patient and solved every problem. She was very responsive via email and phone, and I was never for one moment worried that she wouldn't come through with excellent catering services. She had solutions to all of our various challenges in an unconventional space with last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend her to anyone and everyone.

I was given several options for my son's graduation party based on the budget I had and the number of people I expected. All of the baked entrees were very tasty.Everyone in attendance thought I had ordered from a favorite local Italian restaurant we all like to frequent. The cheese and cracker tray also saved me a lot of time. I supplemented with my own large tossed salad and some of my own desserts. The food was delivered hot and ready to serve with heating trays and burners. There is enough to do at a party so it was a relief to have the main course taken care of. Leftovers for the family the next day are also nice to have when you are tired after a party so order accordingly. Cleanup is a breeze when you have throw away aluminum trays. I highly recommend this service as I have used other caterers and will use Malone Catering again based on this experience.

Food was amazing! She was amazing! I really didn't know what I wanted and she help me through figuring out what would work for my dinner party of 10. I also have some complicated food restrictions and she very willingly work around them. We ended up with an awesome three course meal. Most important she was able to go with the flow, if I didn't have something she needed she worked around it, when guests hadn't pretold me what they don't eat she worked around it. Everyone had a great time and it was because of the food and the service. Highly recommended!!

We had an Indian fusion wedding last weekend at an off-site venue, and Simply Elegant Catering did a fantastic job. We originally contacted SEC to provide full service catering and American style food, with the intent of having another restaurant provide Indian food. However, SEC’s chef offered to make the Indian food for our tasting, and it was delicious. As a result, SEC caterered both style menus. They also worked with us to develop a mostly vegetarian menu to meet the needs of the groom and many of our guests. A few of our guests actually commented that it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had. Sam of SEC was very helpful and responsive, and his entire staff seemed eager to work with us to help make our event run smoothly and meet our wishes. And SEC’s services were very reasonably priced. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about SEC, and would recommend them to anyone looking for delicious food with friendly service.

I have been using buffets for years now, I cant say enough about their quality of food and the service of the staff. They are willing to go the extra mile for individuals who have food allergies/sensitivities, including myself. They can do fully staffed functions of any size or just drop off catering. Suggestions are welcome if you are looking for something different besides the menu. The deliveries are always on time and professionally put together. Which for business lunches/breakfasts are extremely important given the time restraints. Here at iRobot we rate Buffets A+. Thank you Buffets.

Chef Reed and and his staff of culinarians and service staff provided a wonderful holiday feast for Phillips Exeter Academy. Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

We first saw their catering services with very competitive pricing, we decided to pay the restaurant a visit. The interior is very well done and the food qualify is very good. We got in touch and proceeded to book them for our baby's welcoming party. The Thumb Tack online response is quick, we also got in touch with the owner. We changed the menu and selection three times and they provided confirmation and delivered on-time. Will hire again and will probably dine there. Highly recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
