"Paul is amazing, truly amazing. I have had hundreds of massages from many masseurs -- and Paul is easily in the top three for a lot of reasons. I'll key off the word "authentic," meaning that the massage and energy work he does is from the inner recesses of his heart. That has formed a man who is fully aware of himself and his senses -- and it equips him to be in tune with your sensory experience. The authenticity has motivated him to be extremely knowledgeable about bodies and to confidently use his own to accomplish deep and meaningful muscle work. He genuinely wants to help you feel better and accrue all of the benefits of massage. To that end, he is an authentic communicator as well. He'll send you a special link when you book an appointment with excellent resources to help you gain even more from massage. And, if you wish for conversation, you will find Paul engaging and authentic. When I laid down on his massage table, I was sore from a long drive. But his work on my neck and shoulders has reduced the pain, tenseness and restored a range of motion. Paul's knees get into the action as well -- and in a remarkable and effective way. Paul has the depth, the knowledge, the personal commitment, the mastery of various approaches/techniques, and the attentiveness to care for your needs (offering water, a shower, etc. in a genuinely warm and helpful way). I cannot recommend anyone more highly. Wow!"

"I wanted to wait until at least the next day to write a review, because I was a bit lightheaded after my session. However, I woke up the next morning in so much less pain than I had been in years. This was not a "cookie-cutter" massage; Doug was able to remove stress knots and loosen up the tension in my upper back. He described thoroughly what he was doing and how and why it would benefit. I would highly recommend seeing Doug Turet for massage therapy."

"I have had many massages over the years and was drawn to Eric because of his European training. I was looking for something different then the deep tissue I normally get- I wanted something relaxing. I chose to get the Lomi massage. I actually fell asleep on the table-- totally stress free and relaxed! "

"I was very fortunate to hear about Steve from my yoga teacher. Steve is a true healer. I came to him with back discomfort and emotional pain. I came out of his office feeling light as a snowflake, physically and spiritually. This session has given me a burst of energy I needed to get over a difficult moment in life. Ever since Steve helped me, I've felt more aware of imbalances in my posture. I feel a muscle relieve and a calmer breath when I just remember his healing touch. I will definitely treat myself to his services again. "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a therapeutic massage tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body. Before having a prenatal massage, always check in with your prenatal care provider and ask if massage therapy will be safe for you and your pregnancy. A pregnancy massage is much more than just an indulgence. The specialized strokes and techniques used to loosen tight muscles, reduce swelling, alleviate pressure, and ease tension provide positive health benefits for both you and your baby. Experts recommend finding a massage therapist who has received additional training on prenatal massage techniques. This is typically a certification above and beyond their standard massage therapy certification and training requirements. During the massage you will likely lie on your side or in a semi-reclined position; these supported poses keep you and the baby comfortable and free from strain or undue pressure. During the massage, the therapist will listen to what body challenges you are experiencing and work to release tension. The massage should be a relaxing and very soothing experience.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

Is Swedish massage safe during pregnancy?

As long as your prenatal care physician has cleared you for prenatal massage, it should be safe to indulge yourself in a Swedish massage during pregnancy. In fact, scheduling regular pregnancy massages can have wonderful health benefits for you and the baby. Swedish and other massages can feel great and also have a variety of health benefits, according to studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage include reduction in leg and back pain, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a better overall mood.

To find the right massage therapist for you, read the therapist’s online reviews and call to ask them about their experience with prenatal massage. Massage therapists who have been specially trained in prenatal massage techniques often advertise this area of expertise on their websites. Don’t hesitate to ask questions beforehand, and to communicate during the massage about what does and does not feel good.

Can you have massages while pregnant?

Not only can you have a massage while pregnant, multiple scientific studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services demonstrate that pregnancy massages provide physical and mental benefits to pregnant women and women in labor. Always ask your OB-GYN about receiving massages before starting any massage therapy to make sure it is safe for your own pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can alleviate pain, improve mental health and feel great. According to the DHHS, the benefits can include:

  • Decreased depression.
  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Decreased leg and back pain.
  • Lower cortisol levels, which in turn lowers prematurity rates.
  • Lessened labor pain (for women who received massage during labor).
  • Labor time that is three hours shorter, on average, for women who receive massage during labor.
