Sara , Daniel and Richard came into our home and we turned our kitchen over to them. By the end of the evening party, they felt like family to us! The food was amazing and the presentation was visually beautiful! Our guests sent us notes afterwards praising the food and caterers!! They were GREAT!!

Everyone at our wedding RAVED about how amazing the food was. The presentation was perfect. Chris was incredible to work with. He was responsive and worked so hard to meet our every need (gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options). We couldn't of asked for a better price for what we got either! Everything was amazing.

Daniel is an accomplished chef and caterer. We have hired him for graduation and dinner parties and each time he has made each event spectacular to the point where all the guests asked for his contact information. Daniel's has a real talent for creating, cooking, seasoning and presenting plates that never disappoint. We do not hesitate to recommend Daniel to others and would and will hire him over and over again.

I truly enjoyed my evening out. Sarah is very warm & inviting. I asked for some soup & sandwich ideas, she had 2 soup & sandwich recipes which were fun & simple to follow. I was able to bring home lots of yummy food for my family to taste. I am glad I tried this because I feel I made a new friend. Sarah is passionate about cooking, & is a great chef!

John was excellent to work with! Even though we had unusual restrictions from our wedding venue, John designed and delivered a perfect menu! His food is delicious and his advice is honest and invaluable. We also had a few vegan guests at our wedding, and John took the challenge in stride. We had rave reviews about the food. He made sure we (bride and groom) got a chance to eat. We can't thank him enough!

My husband and I hired S.Y.B Catering and Bar Services - a Division of S.Y.B Event Planning Services, for our wedding at the Waterworks Museum this past September and the entire staff, particularly Owner and our Day of Coordinator Soraya Y. Belgacem , were incredible to work with. We came to her not even a month before our date because our caterer we originally had backed out due to a death in the family. She met with us at the Waterworks, we chose her over another caterer because she was familiar with the venue, as it is not your typical lay out. She showed us her sample menu, listened to what we wanted and then gave us her opinion. She was even able to add table cloths, tables and chairs, to our order as the other caterer was handling that. Her staff, bartenders and catering team came in early, set up everything, decorated the tables. Everything looked AMAZING and we both were very happy. The food was also amazing, almost not your "typical" boring wedding foods. We wanted a social type of party, so we did lots of fun passed appetizers, chicken and waffle skewers, spinach and feta cigars, ahi tuna tar tar that they served on a spoon, mini Swedish meatballs, which came out on mini plates and mini forks (So cute!!) The food stations were also set up, very nicely. Since they specialize in Mediterranean, we did some fresh sea-foods, which were amazing and a Middle Eastern station, we never tasted Hummus like that before!! The bar service was great, amazing bartender, fun and happy. We did a custom cocktail - that was a pink and blue color, it tasted amazing. We even had champagne handed out as people walked in through the doors. Soraya handled everything to a T, we did not have to worry about anything. ALL of her staff were so professional and worked very hard! They even wrapped up some left overs for our after party! We can’t thank S.Y.B Event Planning Services and Soraya enough for helping to make our wedding day so wonderful!

I work for a large apartment community. We decided, very last minute, to host a catered BBQ for our residents and were scrambling to find a caterer with about 2 weeks to pull everything together. I managed to find Lori on Thumbtack and she was immediately very responsive and professional. She set up a great menu for our residents and gave us an unbeatable price. The day of the event, there was a little miscommunication on what time we were to start (this is why I did not check punctuality, I wanted to be honest, but also emphasize that it was a misunderstanding and not just her staff showing up late). Her staff got here with less time than planned to set up and start cooking and they FLEW getting everything set up and ready to go. In the end, we were only behind by about half an hour and no one seemed to really notice or mind. The food was delicious, very high quality, and her staff was amazing, very efficient, kind and professional. I cannot say enough good things about this experience and would highly recommend Lori for any sort of catering event. She knows how to take care of her customers! Thank you so much Lori for making this a memorable event for our community! If we do decide to cater another event in the future, we are definitely coming back to you!

Chef Marty and his team provided appetizers, main meal, desserts, bar service, linens and dinnerware for our recent Holiday Party_12/6/13. Chef Marty was a delight to work with, he was responsive to our menu requests & updates; the request for a vegan meal was provided without a hitch. Pricing for our Holiday Party was fabulous, as a volunteer organization, we are always looking for the best for our dollars. The best review to offer was the request for business cards from the attendees! The serving staff were friendly and accommodating to last minute requests. I will keep Malone Catering's contact information near by!

Working with Aipyn has been a treat. I have used the company for two different parties. People from both parties are still talking about the food, the wonderful service, and the lovely chef. The food is beyond words. I can’t wait for my next event this summer. Best wishes, and thank you again.

We had an Indian fusion wedding last weekend at an off-site venue, and Simply Elegant Catering did a fantastic job. We originally contacted SEC to provide full service catering and American style food, with the intent of having another restaurant provide Indian food. However, SEC’s chef offered to make the Indian food for our tasting, and it was delicious. As a result, SEC caterered both style menus. They also worked with us to develop a mostly vegetarian menu to meet the needs of the groom and many of our guests. A few of our guests actually commented that it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had. Sam of SEC was very helpful and responsive, and his entire staff seemed eager to work with us to help make our event run smoothly and meet our wishes. And SEC’s services were very reasonably priced. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about SEC, and would recommend them to anyone looking for delicious food with friendly service.

I have used Buffets Inc for at least 8 years and would not use anyone else! The food is made fresh each day, the prices are reasonable, this is a family owned business and they are great to work with. I first met Mark when he was volunteering his services for a non-profit I was involved with and was impressed with him personally and professionally. I have used Buffets Inc for small meetings to large clam bakes. If I am serving lunch at a meeting the attendees will often ask if Mark is catering because they remember his food and desserts! I can't say enough good things about Buffets Inc!

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

We first saw their catering services with very competitive pricing, we decided to pay the restaurant a visit. The interior is very well done and the food qualify is very good. We got in touch and proceeded to book them for our baby's welcoming party. The Thumb Tack online response is quick, we also got in touch with the owner. We changed the menu and selection three times and they provided confirmation and delivered on-time. Will hire again and will probably dine there. Highly recommend.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
