Todd did a wonderful job at revising an academic essay in the humanities to be submitted for publication. He never misunderstood what I wanted say. Also, he works fast and efficiently. This was my first time relying on someone I did not know, and I was uncertain about how it would work: but worked it did! Thank you Todd. Julia

I reached out to thumbtack to find professionals who were really good at writing resumes and I had several writers (including Karen) who responded. I narrowed it down to 2 (which included Karen) and immediately contacted both. I wasn't able to reach both parties so I left a message on both voicemails. Within 10 minutes Karen returned my call and I told her what I wanted done. After listening to her speak for a few minutes I told her she was hired. I was very impressed about how well she listened and her description of how she would create a resume that I would be pleased with. Well, to make a long story short, Karen produced an EXCELLENT resume and cover letter! I was very happy with her work. She is very professional and really meets the deadline that was agreed on. If I could give her overall performance 10 stars I certainly would. I am also looking forward to having her set up my LINKEDIN account. If you're looking for a resume writer look no further because you will not regret going forward with Spring Forward. Career Services & Business Documents. I have absolutely no complaints!! Great Job Karen!

My experience with Ian was SO delightful... I am a bit older and recently decided to go back to college. I hired Ian to help me with college essays.. He has a great background and such a creative writer. In addition to the essays he offered to help me with my resume knowing that colleges will also request that. I couldn't be happier with his service!!

David was absolutely amazing in helping me articulate just what I wanted to say to my sister on her wedding day! My sisters and I had the idea to make our speech into a poem for our other sisters wedding day. I am not a very good poem writer, however, David helped me take my thoughts and put it into a poem! He was extremely quick in his responses, flexible with making changes, and so beyond easy to work with! I highly recommend his professionalism and his creativeness!

I contacted Sara on craigslist while searching for someone who could help me with editing my graduate school application essays. The application was due about 3 days after I initially made contact with Sara. In any case, I could not finish my drafts by the time I told her I would due to a family emergency. I was frazzled and discombobulated. About 6 hours before it was due, she edited and proofread 2 of my essays. She paid keen attention to detail and stayed up late in the evening to make sure I could get these in on time. The finished product was flawless. She goes above and beyond for her clients!

Of the five choices that I had, Susan was such a godsend in my time of need. She helped me iron out my ideas and offered word suggestions that made the story of my life leap out from the page. She refined my thoughts and helped with the technical editing that I struggled with. This essay was one of the most important pieces that I had to write and after hearing Susan’s initial thoughts and ideas, I trusted it into the care of her hands. Susan was also great because she offered different price plans to work within my budget. Finally, she also worked within my tight deadline. But if you give her more time she can help with research and possibly run your work by specific industry professions for feedback. I strongly recommend Susan when you need someone to help bring out the best of you through your writing.

Laura is a talented writer and copy editor. I had the pleasure of working with her on a website redesign project for a non-profit school. She did an excellent job of shaping the entire content script, as well as creating copy that was engaging and user-friendly. She is highly organized, a great listener, and has a good sense of tone and direction.

For the past year, I have worked with Ms. Lisa Kay on multiple subjects: studying for the SAT/ACT, and working on my college application essays. With her variety of tricks and strategies, I have developed skills to do well on these tests. Although I struggled with grasping certain subjects in the beginning, Lisa has been very patient and helped me understand why I got questions wrong versus how many questions I do. Sometimes, when I was frustrated with the practice test I took, she would always reply to my emails and calm me down, keeping me motivated and thinking more positively. Over the course of this year, she has helped build up my self esteem/confidence for test taking, and now I feel much more comfortable with the SAT/ACT. She is very rational and realistic: she always speaks the truth and will make sure that her students improve one way or another. Although her tutoring sessions are only once a week for about an hour each, she can be easily contacted via Skype, email, text, phone call, etc. I know for sure that whenever I have questions, she will always be there to help, and without her, I have no idea where I would be right now in the college process.

Simply put: Kat Setzer rescued the first essay I ever wrote-- which went on to win a major award; which attracted the attention of a grant organization; which gave me a grant to research the subject of the essay further; which became a book that will now be published in two months. And who did I give a draft of that book to, before I dared give it to my editor? Kat. And once again, she gave me amazing, astute, precise feedback. Kat can see when an essay starts in the wrong place; when its events would have more impact in a different order (the issue with that first essay-- she was totally right, as always); when a story's characters are undeveloped; when a different sentence or word would have more impact in a cover letter or professional document. I can't count up how many things I've given her to read over the years, but she's made every single one of them better, and made me sound smarter and more creative every time. She *sees* how to make them better, sees it even when no one else can. Pure editing wizardry.

As a PhD student in the final phase of writing my dissertation, I was enormously grateful to Lauren. She is highly responsive, professional, and added real value to my project. The fact that the final product reflects more accurately my initial hopes and intentions is largely due to her input. She is an outstanding proofreader, editor and thinker. Not only did she pick up typos and mistakes but her contribution around tone, meaning, clarity, and style made a qualitative difference to my efforts. I highly recommend Lauren to you without reservation and encourage others to take advantage of her talents. She is worth every cent!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
