I hired Jeff Thompson to design and build a custom beverage center, a personal work station and a built in linen cabinet in my powder room for storage. He worked with me on the design of all of these pieces and he had great creative ideas. His work is impeccable , the job site was always clean, the project was done in the amount of time he projected and for the price we agreed on. Jeff is very personable so it was a pleasure to have him in my home. I am so happy with the work he did for me. I would highly recommend his services

We hired Bob to demo an odd room with a roof that was built in the middle of our loft. He’d estimated that it would be a two or three day job. As demos go, it’s hard to tell exactly until you get into it. Unfortunately, the structure was built to withstand a hurricane and was a much tougher job than expected. Everything was excessively nailed and had to be pounded out piece by piece. Yet, Bob finished in two days with everything hauled to the dump and the work area cleaned. He was on time and courteous and worked around my schedule. Before he could do the demo, we had to have the sprinkler system rerouted, and Bob was very accommodating with our start date. A hard worker, and I’d highly recommend him.

Baystate Group Associates recently finished our 750 sq foot basement and the end result far exceeded our expectations. Victor stayed engaged with my wife and I daily throughout the project and kept us updated on the progress daily. I don't think the basement would have come out as it did if Victor didn't make several great recommendations along the way in regards to the basement layout, fixtures, colors, and other specific details. The team's that were at our house at various times throughout the job made sure that everything was clean and spotless at the end of everyday. I highly recommend VIctor and Baystate Group Associates for any refinished basement, remodeling, or building needs.

We hired Joe to redo our old stairs in our home. They needed A LOT of work and he did an unbelievable job- custom fitting each stair, working with me to determine a color and even increasing the size of the stairs to give us a bit more room. He was extremely respectful of our home - very neat and clean, always closing doors when going in and out, etc. Reallt appreciated his hard work and would definitely recommend him for any of your home jobs.

Jeff Crafford is the best carpenter and contractor around, and we highly recommend him to you. He is creative, hard-working, dedicated, and exceptionally talented. He completed a kitchen and basement renovation project for us, as well as a few smaller projects such as door replacements and opening up our living room and stairwell. Jeff is a master craftsman and a true gentleman. He is kind, honest and true to his word. The improvements he made to our home are absolutely beautiful and his prices were very reasonable. If you are fortunate enough to hire Jeff for your new construction or home renovation project, you will not be disappointed. Great guy, great contractor! Julie & Frank Hackett Taunton, MA

Bob “the builder” as my family and I refer to him is my go-to contractor for any work we need done. Bob built our entire 3000 sq ft house 14 years ago and we have had him back several times since for new projects. He is a quality builder, honest, reliable and reasonably priced. When we wanted an extra 2 car garage, we called Bob and he constructed an exterior 2 car garage for us, which turned out beautiful. He worked with us on the size, style and layout and made sure it complimented our main house structure. Years later, when wind storms caused a tree to fall through my garage, I called Bob again to make the repair. He did everything from fixing the soffit, siding and gutters to reshingling the roof. As always, he was professional, responsive and understanding as I worked through the cumbersome insurance company process. Recently, I hired Bob again to build a large elevated composite deck. His workmanship is sound and of high quality, his prices are reasonable and I highly recommend him to others. Bob has been building for a long time and he knows his stuff. He and his crew show up promptly every day (even when it’s 98 degrees out!) and I appreciate that they work hard and make consistent progress until the job is done. He communicates with me regularly to keep me informed on the project. I continue to be happy with Bob’s work and will have him back again when we have another project for him. Thank you Bob for doing great work whenever we need it.

When you are on a winter vacation and a pipe bursts in your home and you literally lose walls and ceilings and floors and are left with studs and a major insurance claim, the one contractor that you would want to have by your side is Keith Gilmore. Keith took hold of the situation and secured the required trades (his choices were in line with his own caliber of expertise) in order to get our home livable once again. It was a very long road but Keith was with us every step of the way. His workmanship is impeccable, he takes enormous pride in what he produces, is very innovative and is always open to ideas, both accepting and offering them. He is an honest and fair businessman and I have shared his name with family and neighbors. If I ever need to make any improvements and/or "fixes" he is the one and only contractor we will use. We have been enjoying our "new/old" home for awhile now and it still amazes me to live each day surrounded by this beautiful transformation.

Leo, and crew framed out a 30x50 1st floor deck for a new custom barn house. Started on time, Did what he said he would do, and the end product was what it was expected to be at a fair price. I added a little more work, for just a little bit more money and it all worked out great. I have more work to do, and Leo and Crew will be invited back for more of the same experience. I would refer Leo to frame anything needing this type of work

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. On professionalism: Curley was very knowledgeable. He knew exactly what to do and how to fix issues around my condo. Not only is he an expert in his industry, he has a lot of connections to help with other issues. For example, my home needed plumbing, electrical, and a bunch of other things. He knew great contacts to fix those issues. I am an impatient individual and I can say I feel confident in Curley to get things done at my speed. He is responsive at all hours and days. He never seems 'too busy' for me even when he is with other projects. On work quality: Fantastic! I couldn't ask for better. Every crack, hole, patch or imperfection was covered up and looks like new. I am not one to let the small things go and he lived up to my expectations. Colors are evenly distributed. There were no uneven patches especially in the corners of the walls. On behavior: Very easy to work with or should I say was able to deal with me. I know I am a meticulous and stressed individual and if he can deal with me, he can make any customer happy. Curley is honest and respectful. He genuinely wants to help you not to rip you off. His prices are affordable. I ended up giving him extra for all the work he put in because his work was worth it. Also, he and his guys will clean up after themselves so you don't have to worry about a mess after they are done! Highly recommended. Honestly, don't look anywhere else. Curley&Lad's is your go-to.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
