Emi Ferreira Masonry is by far the best company. They did an AMAZING job on my home patio and pavers around my pool. They are also extremely polite, professional, and are reasonably priced. Out of the Other 3 masons that visited Im happy I chose John, he truly puts his all into his work for an amazing finish. Wouldn’t go to to anyone else but him!!

Phil was great! He did a really nice job on our patio installing pavers. He quoted out the job earlier in the week, found the product we were looking for and showed up on time and completed everything a day earlier than anticipated. We would highly recommend Phil's services.

Josh and his crew did an amazing job from start to finish. He was very quick to come and assess the job, provide a fair, detailed estimate, and respond to my many questions. Once hired, he started the work on time, arriving early every day and always cleaning up the job site. He left my yard (even parts he wasn't working on) neater than when he started! Josh was easy to work with, friendly, and open to questions as mentioned above. His crew were all very professional as well. Josh's work on my new fieldstone wall, paver patio, and stone veneer basement steps have completely transformed my backyard into a tranquil retreat that I want to spend time in. I have already recommended him to 2 friends looking for masonry work, and plan to have him come back and do additional work on my property in the future.

Working with Al, Bill and Danny was awesome. We needed a new driveway channel drain and some grading issue in our driveway fixed. Al gave me a very competitive quote in a very timely manner. Once we agreed to the scope of the project the guys knocked it out of the park. They always communicated the steps along the way and ensured we understood. The new drain not only looks great but is top of the line. The new grading to the driveway will definitely solve most of our water issues. The guys were timely, friendly and very professional. I would hire Al and crew for any work I needed done, and will definitely talk to Al when the wife and I are ready to put in the paver patio (our next project). Thanks so much Al and crew! We are extremely happy with the work.

Desperately needing a front walkway replaced, Kegan was able to transform a shoddy and broken old brick walkway into a beautifully laid walkway with pavers, increasing the width to easliy accommodate a wheelchair when needed. His work is clean, precise and he completed the job sooner than expected. Needless to say, I was completely satisfied with his work and recommend him to anyone wanting to upgrade their property.

Harry Soares of Zygma Masonry provided us with one of the three quotes we received for restoring our patio and walkways. His professionalism and knowledge were evident from the start. We hired Zygma masonry and could not be happier with the entire process. In fact, we will be having Zygma masonry back to our home this spring for another project. Thanks very much for a job well done! Rich R.

The work they did was beautiful. Last year, we had another company, that started the job and never finished it. We were reluctant to trust another company. Andrew understood this, and was very punctual and did exactly what he said he was going to do. He finished the patio in our backyard, installed a fire pit and a beautiful bench around it. He also did the pavers around our pool. It really is beautiful. It will make the summer very enjoyable. I would recommend him without hesitation. Hired Whitney Landscape for lawn mowing and they did such a great job that we are now on a 10-day mowing schedule! Whitney also set up our irrigation system and it has been working great. We are now also hiring Whitney for our upcoming landscaping project which includes replacing shrubs and trees, and adding a new paved walkway to our back patio. In addition, we are hiring Whitney to do our snow removal once winter hits New England! Whitney Landscaping does amazing work and is your all-in-one resource for any type of landscaping, design, pavers, patio, snow removal, and much more. I highly recommend them and glad we found Whitney!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
