First impression is that you should meet Darcio Correa in person. He is a gentleman craftsman who is attentive to every need the homeowner desires and, as we learned, he takes an enormous amount of pride in delivering superior service. He plastered a kitchen wall for us where tile had been removed. The wall was not in good shape. When we returned home, the wall was 'paint ready' and no signs of what had been when we left that morning. He is an 'artist'. Darcio arrives on time, quotes a fair price, and is well experienced in a number of home handyman trades. Above & Beyond service.

Thank you Stella Construction. I had the company remodel my kitchen. New hard wood floors, counter tops, cabinets, tile back splash, window casings, baseboard, and paint. The back splash now absolutely compliments the counter tops and cabinets. Everything came out perfect!

I needed to have my garage painted and cabinets installed. The guys showed up on time and were very friendly, knowledgable and courteous. Their work was impeccable and they showed genuine concern for perfection. I also had a tile backsplash installed and my driveway pressure cleaned and both also were done perfectly. I will use them again in the future for upcoming projects and my husband and I highly recommend this company. Homeowners in Sanford, Fl.

We hired Carlos to lay down a new floor in our basement, which required doing a full skim coat on the entire existing floor first and then laying all the new VCT tile. Carlos purchased all the supplied, and moved around some of the heavy furniture that we were unable to fully get out of the space, which made the whole project incredibly easy for us. He was responsive to every text, did the whole job in less than a week, and every night left the space cleaner than he found it. If we ever have flooring work again, Carlos will be the only person we call!

We own a 1920's colonial. When we purchased the house the walls were original, in very bad condition and had not been painted in many years. Over the past 10+ years Troy has restored, repaired and painted the walls and woodwork in every room in the house. He takes pride in his workmanship and attention to detail. He's methodically patched holes, cracks & imperfections in our old walls. The time spent here was far more than the actual painting. His at times slightly higher estimates have always accurately reflected the hours spent prepping the surfaces. Last summer (2016) Troy acted as general contractor when we did a major remodel of our very large & in bad shape 4 season sun porch. Again, we were thrilled with the end result. He was available and responsive when an inevitable (but minor) miscommunication arose between myself and the electrician. He worked quickly to remedy the situation. The room was transformed to a comfortable space that my family enjoys everyday

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

My initial contact with Northeast Construction was great, they sent a very professional response and sent out some one (Ian?) the next day to make the repairs to walls and touch it up. Brandon also came out to check on the job and also provided a estimate on some bathroom work we would like to do. After speaking with him we could tell he has extensive experience and knows what he is talking about. We had no idea we couldn't install Sheetrock of any type in a shower behind tile, we had numerous contractors say that was perfectly fine and the norm, after researching its is not the norm. We look forward to working with them on our bathroom job and future projects.

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

Overall was very satisfied. The price was good value for a large replacement patio and fence. Bruno and his crew were all very friendly and responsive to trying to address my concerns. My yard presented challenges due to pitch of yard and some stump removal. They worked hard to make it work. Took longer then I expected but some delays were unavoidable due to weather and paving company not providing the right color mixture of pavers. And I was not in a hurry anyway. Bruno always got back to me on my questions and issues. Felt they were hard working and very honest.

Jose and his partner did an exceptional job on removing my kitchen tiles, cleaning up the subfloor, and installing the prefinished wood. What separates these guys from the others I’ve worked with is their honesty, value, and reliability. They showed up exactly when they said they would and backed up any further materials they needed to buy by providing receipts. In the end, the quality of their work was fantastic. If you live in the Somerville, Medford, Arlington, or surrounding Boston area, I highly suggest you hire these guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower β€” to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.Β Β

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot β€” or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
