Andrew did a great job removing a small wall from my house which involved cutting out a portion of drywall through a few metal studs - with some problem-solving along the way.

Darcio painted my kitchen. His prices where reasonable and very much worth the price. He did a great job and in the time frame he said. He was very clean quiet and respectful. On the day he finished his work I ask him to give me a quote on another painting job which I will hire him for when I'm ready. I would recommend Darcio to other people looking for someone to work in their homes. Thank You again Darcio I love my freshly painted kitchen and I will be in touch for the next job. Laura

John was extremely professional, courteous and punctual. His workmanship was excellent. This was a small job, but he didn't act like it wasn't worth his time - approached it with enthusiasm to have the opportunity to work with us. We hired John to patch/repair drywall, skim coat walls, and prime in a bathroom. VERY happy with his work, was very competitive in his rates, and WILL hire him again!

Best person to work with. In addition to the dishwasher install, had to install a new garbage disposal with wiring, install whole house water filter, instal faucets for slop sink and a bathroom.. he was very kind and took care of everything the same day. very professional and top notch work quality.. some leaks came up next day, Ernie was very professional, came back and fixed everything. Very reasonable price for all these.. Highly recommend and definitely will come back for all my future plumbing needs..

Mark replied to a job posting that I had already given to someone else, but I liked his reviews so I hired him to do a larger job on a home I am renovating. I hired Mark and his crew to do new plaster ceilings and walls on the whole house. There were acoustic ceiling tiles that were really gross and I wanted to make everything fresh and new. This was the first time I have ever used plaster professionals so I didn't realize how much work goes into it as opposed to sheet rock and drywall. The end result is amazing. The whole house looks brand new and the work was perfect. All windows, doors and floors were covered and taped off so they didn't make a mess and now we are just waiting for the plaster to dry so we can paint. I will certainly be using them again for upcoming renovations. Very impressed and very happy with the work.

I needed a bit of drywall replaced above one of my tub surrounds. Mike understood what I needed and quoted very reasonably. When he called me to tell me he had an opening next day I took him up on it. Although he actually ran late, he made sure to call me before his expected arrival time so I was never left wondering. He arrived after his brief delay (less than 1 hour) went over what I needed and expected again and promptly went to work. He kept me appraised throughout the day and finished this job within the same day right around 5. The quality of his work is excellent. I actually feel I held him back from his finishing skills as my wife and I intend to finish off some other work including painting which allowed me to free him up a bit earlier. Thanks Mike for all you did and I look forward to passing more work your way!

He was a little late arriving from what we agreed, but he did notify me of his delay before he was actually expected. He did pretty much what I asked, and he worked steady at completing it. He was very courteous, and in the end did a good job. I was repairing a drywall and I had wanted it to be patched with just one piece of drywall to minimize the seams and sanding I am expecting to do. He used 3 pieces, but in the end it looks like it's OK. So yes, I think Good to borderline Excellent is a fair assessment.

If you need any drywall or plaster projects completed, look no further. Greenland visited our home on a Sunday the following day after we submitted our request on Saturday. He took a look at our project and volunteered to repair dome other areas we needed done. Price was right, and job was completed in less than a week from when we made our request. He's nest and accurate with his work and the quality of his work speaks for itself. We are finishing our room above the garage and we won't need to ask around, Greeland is our guy for all things wall and ceiling related. You won't be disappointed.

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

We highly recommend Paul and his team. These guys were easy to work with, extremely responsive to our needs, and reasonable on price. We had a family room that was covered in wood panels. Everything was taken down and replaced with drywall along with installing a picture window. They were very helpful throughout the entire process and had a great eye for detail. Paul and the guys were respectful in getting the project well-done within a quick time frame. I would hire again for future housing needs.

Erik replainted my 600 sq ft apartment that had about 3 decades of paint coats underneath that caused all sorts of cracking. He scraped all loose paint and plaster and the dug out cracks in the plaster to insure that they don't come back. Then he skim coated, primed and painted the walls. He was courteous, professional, fair, and detail oriented. He even caught a building leak that would've caused expensive damage to my apartment and the one above it. He was very self-sufficient and friendly to building staff and neighbors when I wasn't around. He also communicated the perfect amount so I knew what was going on, what the time table would be, and understood all the costs. Highly recommended.

Stephen did an amazing job. He went above and beyond to make sure that our project was successful. He was so good, that we kept asking him to do more and more. He ended up doing our floor (GREAT job on laying tile down, ..... looks great). Also, he did all drywall, spackling and the trim work for our room. I was very impressed with his attention to detail there. I highly recommend him - and would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
