Valen is was absolutely great for my event. We did a trial run which I would definitely recommend. It helped get both of us on the same page for what I was hoping for and what I would look like with certain styles. At the real event, Valen’s makeup made me feel very beautiful and glamorous with my theme without making me feel like I wasn’t myself and my hair looked great without looking too crunchy or plastic with hairspray. I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking for a hair/makeup artist!

I wrote a previous review in August. Cheryl did my bridal makeup for my wedding as well as my bridesmaids. She was amazing! Makeup did not budge from 8a to 2a the next day. I had 4 outfit changes and was sweating. Only touch up I needed was lipgloss.

Tasha was one of the bridal makeup artists that my sister had a trial with. My sister loved the hair and the way Tasha plumped up her lips. Tasha drove to my sister, brought in all the equipment and even stayed late to ensure that we had an opportunity to see the finished product. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. We ended up going with someone who had more experience with Indian skin and hair for the wedding. However, Tasha's work quality in the trial was really good and I just had to leave this review!

Alicia came to my home in Westford, MA to do my bridal makeup trial. She came on-time (a few minutes early, in fact) and spent roughly 2 1/2 hours on it. Afterwards, we had a very nice conversation for a while longer before she left. She was very meticulous and really took her time to get things right. Alicia is very friendly and made me feel comfortable and beautiful. You can clearly tell that she has a passion for her craft. I feel that I couldn't have made a better choice with her. If you need a makeup artist for any occasion, I would wholehearted recommend Alicia. She's the best!

I cannot recommend Erin and Laura enough. I hired them to do my wedding makeup and hair for my wedding party. They were very punctual and accommodating, even when I asked for a venue change not long before the date. I showed Laura a few photos of what I wanted and she was able to reproduce the look perfectly. Erin received minimal instructions from me and did a beautiful job with all my bridesmaids. I was warned that non-Asian makeup artists might have trouble working with Asian faces and hair, but these two had no difficulty at all. And for the price, it's a steal.

Ani provided make-up for myself. I couldn’t have been happier with the results. She has a wonderful eye for color, respectfully listens to your requests, and moves throughout the getting-ready period of the day with a calm, collected stress-free attitude. Ani is a true professional, and has a passion for her work. She really can do anything, you just have to communicate what you want and you will not be disappointed. I would recommend Ani to anyone in need of a makeup artist for a wedding or a special event, she is absolutely the best!

I barely wear makeup but when I went to Amanda, she made me feel comfortable and look beautiful. I have had terrible experience in the past with makeup artist, Amanda make the process enjoyable and relaxing. She is the only person I would allow to do my makeup when going out for an event. Would recommended her to anyone who is looking for a makeup artist.

Prior to signing a contract with Sarah, I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to hire a makeup artist for my wedding, solely in the interest of saving money; however, once I met with her for the trial and saw the results, I knew that I had absolutely made the correct decision to hire her! She was professional and accommodating - an absolute pleasure to work with. After seeing photos of my makeup trial, my sister (MOH) and mother both decided that they wanted Sarah to do their makeup as well. The morning of the wedding, she traveled to us for an extremely reasonable fee. All three of us opted for the airbrush foundation, which looked absolutely flawless and didn't feel the least bit heavy. I also opted for the false individual lashes, which look amazing in photos and to my surprise didn't irritate my sensitive, allergy-prone, contact-lensed eyes. In fact, none of the makeup irritated our eyes or skin, and Sarah was gentle when working on our eyes - even my mother who "hates" wearing eye makeup barely flinched when it was her turn! Furthermore, she was friendly and sweet, and made us laugh and feel comfortable. Before leaving, she gave me a brand new lip gloss for touch-ups throughout the night, and despite all the crying, hugging, and dancing that went on, none of my makeup smudged! We all received numerous compliments on how nice our makeup looked, and my husband loved that I still looked like "myself" - not unnatural or overdone. I would absolutely recommend Sarah to anyone seeking a friendly, professional, and talented makeup artist.

I have never been more confident in my makeup skills after having my makeup lesson with Ashley! She is incredibly patient and knowledgeable about makeup application and has a fantastic teaching style. I would recommend her to anyone looking for tips and tricks on how to apply makeup. I would also hire her to do my makeup for special occasions. Hands down one of the best makeup artists I’ve ever met (and I’ve met a ton over my lifetime).

I was a bridal makeup artist. At the time I was working with a hair stylist who did bridal hair. Unfortunately, the stylist became ill. I had less than 2 weeks to find another stylist. Thank God I found Renee!! She is professional, patient, good listener, & above all a great hairstylist!! We worked many weddings together. Anyone who is seeking a hair stylist for your special event (or if you just want a makeover), give Renee a try!! I am confident that you'll be very pleased with the final outcome!!

Kelly is a wonderful makeup artist, who is understanding, kind and professional. She worked with me to find the perfect look for my special day and was always ready to listen to my needs. The day of the wedding I felt at ease knowing I was in Kelly's hands. When she finished with me I felt so beautiful and everyone loved my makeup! It was natural but gorgeous. Kelly has a real gift and she is a true artist! I highly recommend her services!

I was very happy with my experience with Sarah. My makeup was beautiful. Sarah also did the makeup for the members of my bridal party, which included 4 adults and 5 young girls. All were beautiful! In addition to the makeup for the actual day, she provided a trial run, the week before my event. Sarah is very personable, as well as being a talented makeup artist. I had never had my makeup done professionally before, and was a little nervous, but she put me at ease immediately. I would definitely recommend Sarah to anyone looking for a makeup artist for their special day.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
