Fantastic Piano Teacher As adults, how many times have we said "I used to play the piano"? I wanted to play the piano again, but was unable to find a teacher who met my needs as an adult learner. Then I found Bulent Guneralp. He answered my inquiry in a timely manner. We set up the first lesson and then I looked forward to the second lesson. I am now taking piano lessons almost weekly. Aside from his technical expertise, I think that one of the greatest things he gives his students is hope. I'm playing again, I'm practicing again. Sitting at the piano has become both challenging and fun, not a chore. Maybe because I am a teacher (of a different subject), I can recognize good teaching. Bulent is a fantastic music educator because he is neither too easy, nor too critical. He is pleasant, inspiring and meticulous. Most of all, I am hopeful about taking piano lessons again.

I took some classes at Passim with Bertrand and also took some private lessons. He is an amazing guitar player, a wonderful teacher and a great person! He really geared my individual lessons to my level so I could learn the type of music he taught. I would recommend him as a great teacher.

Since I've started working with Sybil, I have more time to practice my conversation skill. She addressed the issues right away during our lessons. Moreover, her delivery method is amazing. Noot so rigid, no rush, and always offering any suggestions necessary to improve my language. I do enjoy it.

My partner and I scheduled lessons together with Jaime to learn the guitar. We are both beginners, so we chose Jaime because of his several reviews of being very knowledgable about the guitar and patient with people, which proved to be true. Overall, our first experience with Jaime was great! We really enjoyed our lesson and look forward to many more.

Lenae is a wonderful teacher for young children brand new to piano - very patient and kind but not hesitant to keep things challenging. She paces lessons well and focuses on proper technique. My daughter always happily goes to her lesson and is smiling on the way out, which says a lot!

After playing the guitar for 45 years I decided to get take some lessons from one who knows guitar. I was fortunate to find Bob, the best guitarist I have ever sat across from, and the best teacher, too. In this first six months of lessons Bob has helped me to sharpen my attack, tighten up my rhythm, improve my ear, and add interest to my playing. My chord vocabulary, which I thought was pretty good coming in, has more than doubled, Bob has shown me how to use these chords, too, in a growing collection of interesting songs. Though I am interested in learning chord melody playing, Bob suggested I start out learning how to play the blues, since the blues are not only fertile ground musically but also a great way to work on expressive, clean playing. We have stressed the fundamentals, worked on correcting some bad habits, and I feel I am moving towards becoming a guitarist who can perform in front of people. Bob is an excellent guitar teacher.

Amy is an incredible teacher - she breaks down singing technique in an easy to understand way and shows me that my voice is way more capable than I thought it was! She provides very practical exercises and examples that help me better understand the mechanics of singing, and provides helpful feedback whenever I fall off of my technique. Most importantly, she makes lessons fun! I highly recommend taking lessons with Amy.

Took lessons with Don when I was in my sixties. Loved his method of teaching and at the very least can sit down at the piano and play to my satisfaction. After much searching my daughter in law found a piano teacher in N.J. with a similar philosophy of teaching for her daughter with amazing results. She is now creating her own songs and loving it. I strongly recommend Don. He is the best.

I have been taking lessons with Frankie weekly for around 2 years. I look forward to my lesson every week. I come away from every lesson excited to work on the material and concepts and I’m certain this has contributed enormously to my progress as a guitar/banjo player. I couldn’t possibly recommend Frankie highly enough as a teacher.

We weren’t sure our 6 year old son was ready to start piano lessons but we thought we would try it. Liana is so professional and treats him like a little grown up. As a result, he acts like a little adult with her and focuses on what she asks of him. In three months, he has learned the notes on the treble and bass clef, is learning the values of the notes and actually tinkers around at home with creating songs. I recommend giving Liana an opportunity to show you what she’s capable of teaching. To top it off, she is a very nice and kind woman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
