I had to cancel the job due to a family friend willing to take care of the replacement of our water heater due to us being on vacation and it being an emergency, but Mark was very professional and willing to work around our time schedule upon our return.

They did a great installing spigots! No leaks and they look a lot nicer than the older ones we had. They also cleaned up after themselves which is very much appreciated! We plan on having them install a new water heater for us as we trust their work.

Raffa was very professional and exactly on time. He made sure replacing my water heater was done right and not cut any corners. I really appreciated the fact I needed some part and he went to homedepot to get them and didn't charge me extra for the time or the parts. He is not considered my Plummer for anything I need for my house. Hire him and you will see for yourself.

I had Marvis replace my water heater in my rental property. He was able to pick up the water heater from Home Depot that was pre-bought and bring it to the property and install it. He had great response time. I would use his services again.

I replaced my original furnace, AC and water heater at my condo with Edward at A&M Services. From start to finish, it went exactly as you would want any transaction to go. Edward was responsive, prompt, and friendly. He kept me in the loop of the status of everything going on. He handled the job with great care and made sure I was pleased with everything. Overall, it was a job well done all around. I highly recommend A&M Services!

We had a new heating system put in as well as a tankless hot water heater. They also upgraded our electrical panel and put in an electric baseboard in our foyer. The guys were punctual, extremely professional and knowledgeable. I recently had an extremely experienced contactor come through for an unrelated project and he said the work that Three Brothers did was some of the best that he had seen in years. I am more than pleased with the outcome! Highly recommend!

Vincent was great. He came in, took time to explain everything on how the water heater works, maintenance procedures and he also knew what he was doing. Very nice guy, very pleasant and personable and was able to service the heater quickly. Vincent even offered to come back at not charge extra if the issue that I had contacted him for happens again. In the end it appeared to have been a simple filter cleaning procedure. Now we have to wait and see if the issue we had happens again, but I am confident that Vincent addressed the root of the problem.

They were great! When we discovered our water heater was leaking, we shut the water off and posted to Thumbtack immediately as we didn't have a go-to plumber. Colonial Mechanical were the first to respond that night and came out to take a look the next morning. They quickly confirmed the water heater couldn't be repaired and were able to replace it with a new one within a few hours. We're very satisfied with the quality and speed of their work!

After working with a multitude of contractors in all the trades, I can honestly say it was a stroke of luck that I came across Azat. Not only is he the consummate professional and expert in plumbing/gas, he is one of the hardest workers I've seen in a long time. He got my water heater connected, rerouted piping (gas and water), gave me many cost saving tips and his pricing was fair and reasonable. I HIGHLY recommend Azat for all your plumbing needs.

Christian did a fantastic job. His price was right in line with all other responses. He walked me through all the work he was going to do and showed me the work when he was done. He installed our new water heater and an exterior water spigot. What I like about Christian was his thoughtfulness and responsiveness. The guy was texting me while on vacation in FL. I would highly recommend him and Prometheus Plumbing.

Artie is one of the most reliable, professional people we have ever worked with. He was very communicative and honest, and worked very hard to do the extensive plumbing work we needed done. He went above and beyond to make sure we knew exactly what needed to be done and what the cost would be. We are happy to have found him through thumbtack and we highly, highly recommend him!

I am a remodeling contractor assigned to bringing a vacant 2 story house up to building code on the North Shore. The property had been abandoned before winter and caused severe water damage from frozen pipes. Several radiators, hidden pipes in the walls, water heater and heating system were all destroyed. Christopher was very patient and methodical in presenting a workable plan. And his price was quit reasonable. I deal with many trades people and Christopher is without hesitation now on my "A" list. Our hot water heater stopped working and Albin quickly got back to us. We got a great rate (as good of a price as you can given how expensive these things are!) he suggest a tankless water heater instead and we are SO happy he did. No complaints on our end!

Needed a new water heater in my home after i noticed it was leaking. I called up Cafarelli Plumbing and Heating and we set up a date for the following day. I got to pick out the exact water heater i wanted from Lowes and sent it over to him. He picked it up and delivered it to my house upon his arrival. He was very professional with his work , leaving practically no mess behind. Now we have hot water again and cant thank him enough for his great price. Definitely recommend him as anybody's go to plumber, will definitely be calling him again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
