Steve has been helping us with some long-needed home repair work. He has re-screened our porch, replaced our corner boards on the home, cleaned out our gutters (up three stories in the back, and then hopped across the roof!!!), replaced the downspouts, replaced some clapboards, and is currently replacing sills and window trim on all of our windows. His work has been outstanding, and he is the nicest gentleman, always polite, knowledgable, and helpful with providing cost-saving pointers. I have already been recommending him to others, and am looking forward to having him back to do some interior work for us in the Fall.

We are thrilled with the results of our roof project with Storm Works. Sean is exceptional. He is a true professional. His communication was consistent and clear, the project was completed on time and within budget, and the crew was meticulous in their work. We have flowering gardens all around our home and garage and Sean’s team took great care to ensure nothing was damaged. I highly recommend Storm Works to anyone in the market for a new roof and for any project within their portfolio. I wish I could give more than a five-star rating because they truly deserve it.

John is a professional handyman with many talents. He installed windows, porch railing, vinyl siding, painted trim and put up with my constant changes to the work needing to be done. Great attention to detail, courteous to my tenants and completed the work in a timely manner at a great price! Already using him on another project! Thanks John!

What a great experience! Frank was meticulous, hard working, and was a pleasure to be around. We are new home owners and miscalculated the number of windows (and storm windows!), but Frank was understanding, generous with his time, and completed the job beautifully! We are so thrilled with the result and would not hesitate to recommend his services.

Sean and his crew installed new gutters on my home and they were fantastic. I got three quotes and Sean gave the most reasonable price. They arrived on time and worked very fast. I have a small house, but I was impressed with how fast they got the job done. My new gutters look great! The guys were also very personable. I highly recommend them!

Joe and his assistant Frank did a great job on replacing two window casings and sills at my mom's home. They arrived on time as well, which I find isn't always the case with contractors. When it came time to reinstall the storm windows they ran into a technicality but they knew how to troubleshoot the issue in order to make the correction. I think anyone who hires Joe & Frank to do carpentry work will be 100% satisfied!

Mark installed new windows in my 1850 home, and we had to coordinate with a moving company so that they were there at exactly the same time. Mark was easy to work with, and responsive to the schedule changes, and installed my windows beautifully and at a reasonable price, I wiuld highly recommend his company!

Russell is a one man show. Russell did a great job on my deck. We had a wood deck and converted to composite with pvc rails, and it came out great. Now I'm going to rehiring him again for a front storm door install. I see my self using Russell again on the future. Such a nice guy.

I recently used Master Jerry Construction to replace gutters, fix some roof issues associated with gutters. Brian explained the project to us up front and what it would entail to complete from timing to costs to what might be found under the old gutters. I recommend Master Jerry Construction.

What can I say about Symphony Home Improvement. They were very fast in starting and completing a project on a colonial home that needed 19 windows on the first floor averaging 96" in total. (Two months in total with one day of install!). Gary was effective in explaining all the options available for our home. Not to mention his availability on meeting past normal business hours for two hours. What I liked about Gary and his team is that he did not beat around the bush. He was direct and it is always a joy to see him at all the other home shows in the Greater Lowell Area. I know I will need to use his services once we install new windows on the second and third level of our home. Thank you Symphony Home Improvement!

We hired Stan and his team to replace 9 tricky windows in our home and to replace our front porch deck that was in a state of disrepair. In all, the professionalism and quality was beyond expectation. The pricing was fair and the extra measures Stan and his team took was icing on the cake. Stan took the time to reach out to me outside of "office hours" to ensure I knew what was happening and provide insight to choices that needed to be made. We are already starting a list of projects we hope he can help us with in the future. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

3 years ago I needed to replace my roof. I also had two skylights I knew needed to be replaced but was always so worried that if I replaced them I would have issues. A friend recommended I call Budget Exteriors, I am so glad I did. When I met Lou and showed him my issues he was very accommodating to my concerns. Lou is very knowledgeable about his products and the process of work that needs to take place ~ I was very comfortable working with him. (I did get other quotes to see if he was fair and he absolutely was.) Going on 4 years and my roof still looks great and my skylights are issue free. So this summer when I wanted to replace all the windows in my house. I called Budget Exteriors for the job. Lou again explained what would be my best options and I was impressed again. His communication with me through out the job was a pleasant add. He seems genuinely concerned for the homeowner to have a good experience. My favorite is my front bay window. My previous front window was flush to the house. Budget constructed my new bowed bay window and it is gorgeous! I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors to anyone.

Alan was very friendly and professional!!! Not only was the requested assignment completed (installation of cabinet door knobs) but he also installed a new keyless door lock, and cleaned the gutters!!! I was so happy to have those extra tasks, out of the way! I’m looking forward to calling him back to install my storm door in the near future.

Could not have been happier with the entire process of doing business with this company. From the initial contact online, through the estimate and finally the install of the windows we were met with nothing but quick responses and professionalism. We never felt like we being rushed to a decision. Brian and Eric and their contractor Jeff were outstanding. The job was done quickly and neatly and our windows are beautiful. They responded quickly to questions even after the job had been finished for weeks and I actually got an email from Brian just the other day to make sure the windows were everything we were hoping for and I was happy to tell them they are. I've heard some nightmare stories of people dealing with some of the better known companies, I consider myself lucky to have found Renoviso and tell everyone I know that these are the guys to use.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
