Rob installed tile on our kitchen floor. He is a professional tile man at a reasonable price and does great work. He was able to quote me from pictures I submitted on thumbtack. My job was small so he was able to fit me in immediately. I removed the old tile myself. Rob took the time to prep the subfloor by putting additional screws in the subfloor and applying red guard as a crack preventer and water proofing membrane. I had lost power that morning and Rob had to scrape the old thinset off manually instead of using a power chisel with no complaints or excuses. His tile laying and grouting were professional quality...... And he completed the job in one day. I will use Rob in the future for all my Tiling needs.

A C Landscaping was hired to remove snow from my driveway sidewalk and walkways during the 2 storms we had in February of 2017 in Belmont. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they performed in a highly professional manner as evidenced by their removing all the snow. I believe that the Owner has a very strong work ethic and is very responsive to customer needs. I definitely intend to use them again in the future as the need arises. Brendan V. Adelson and his crew did a beautiful job patching and painting our entryway and upstairs hallway. Scheduling was a breeze and the work was completed in a timely manner. Adelson and his crew were pleasant and took great care with their work. They worked quickly and did a thorough job without cutting corners. Our walls had some pretty large areas to be patched, and Adelson and his crew did such a great job that now we can't even tell where the holes used to be! We are absolutely satisfied with the high quality of the work performed and highly recommend Adelson. We hope to use them again for other projects in the near future.

Claudio Brisola of Fama Masonry and his workers did extensive masonry removal and and pouring of concrete walkways, 2 large retaining walls, front stair repair and asphalt/driveway removal with concrete driveway replacement at my home in Medford, Ma. Fama Masonry is a fantastic company to work with! Claudio came out to give a free estimate and we reviewed all the options. Price was a factor and we needed to negotiate the job to fit our budget. Claudio was able to do that without compromising the quality of workmanship. We had the walkway done first and after completion, discussed and agreed to work on the front do the home where the bigger, more extensive work was needed; i.e 2 retaining walls taken down and repoured/structured, repair in the garage of the floor, removal and pouring of new driveway. The site was clean after each day. The men were courteous and hard working. Claudio was available by phone if needed and came by in person several times throughout the entire project to ensure we were happy with the work and the job was on task and on time. Clean up was cleared out by a company contracted by Claudio and that went smoothly. Work was completed in the time we had agreed with 100+% satisfaction. I would highly recommend Fama Masonry to anyone who needs masonry help - from small or big projects!!

I needed to have my garage painted and cabinets installed. The guys showed up on time and were very friendly, knowledgable and courteous. Their work was impeccable and they showed genuine concern for perfection. I also had a tile backsplash installed and my driveway pressure cleaned and both also were done perfectly. I will use them again in the future for upcoming projects and my husband and I highly recommend this company. Homeowners in Sanford, Fl.

We hired Ray to tear out and replace our old damaged concrete floor in the garage. Our experience with Ray was the best! He provided a reasonable bid on Thursday and by Monday he and his crew were at work. Tuesday afternoon and the job was done perfectly. Throughout the process Ray kept in touch to keep my informed about when the dumpster would arrive, when the cement would arrive, and described the work process step by step. The garage is located in a 1820 colonial house and had unique problems that only someone of Ray's skills and experience would handle well. We are pleased with Ray's work and look forward to other projects he will likely undertake for us. I'm relieved we have found a gem named Ray. Hire him and you will be fortunate to hire an experienced craftsman who is a pleasure to work with.

The wood floors in my house look fantastic. Two bedroom floors were coated with a golden colored stain and the floors in the hall, dining room and living room were covered (for 20 years) with pink wall to wall carpet. Now all floors are beautiful - Ron restored all of them to their original, natural oak state. Before: quick response to my initial request on time to provide a fair and reasonable estimate During: began and ended within the time frame promised communicated via emails - day or night (fantastic for me!) After: everything cleaned up and put back in place gorgeous floors I could not ask for anything more - well, I will be asking him to install a wood floor in my kitchen this fall.

Dudemaine Construction recently completed a rather large project of my home. My living room, dining room, front entry and bedroom were completely renovated and updated. Dave did a beautiful job. I made many changes during the project and he handled each one with patience and carried it out with pride. The job took about 2 months to complete and I lived in the house while the work was being done. Dave made sure the place was organized and neat every afternoon when he left. I now have a new tiled entry, hardwood floors throughout my living room, dining room and bedrooms, new walls, ceilings and lighting. All my ceilings and walls are freshly painted. Dave took a lot of pride in the work he did. As a result I am very proud of my home again. I would hire Dave Dudemaine again and have no reservations in recommending him to others.

Not only does Austin and his team do beautiful work but he is the most professional and organized contractor that I have ever worked with. He responds to any questions almost immediately and was able to start the work and finish it quickly. He was also extremely flexible. I hired him to install a floor in my rental property and he worked with the tenants to install a beautiful floor with as little disruption as possible to them. The laminate floor he installed in came out beautiful and he also installed 2 railings on the concrete outside steps that look great and will help prevent any slips and falls come this winter. I would definitely reommend hiring him to do any work, especially flooring.

Shawn was not the cheapest or the most expensive estimate to redo our front stairs, he was right in the middle, which is where I usually choose. I showed him pictures of what the steps looked like before a truck plowed into them and wiped them out and he did a terrific job of replicating what we had and doing it within current code. We've had painting done on the house and paving for a new driveway and been disappointed with the effort and results. With Shawn, he came when he said he would, he did what he said he would, he finished when he said he would, and he did it for the price he said he would. It was nice to have a professional do a professional job. We are very pleased.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
