I was a voice student of Julie's for several years. In that time I grew in my skill and confidence as a singer. I learned how control my instrument, and event after the lessons ended, the impact carries on! She also helped me feel comfortable in many genres including country, blues and rock. Julie was always patient with me, even when I was being thick-headed. I always felt encouraged through by her teaching and mentoring. I can say with full confidence that I would not be the singer I am today without Julie!

I hired Ron for my husbands 50th surprise birthday party. Ron was very professional and a pleasure to work with from the start. He asked for a sample of songs and/or artists we would like to hear and he played everything! He and his wife were wonderful at getting everyone involved and up singing! I couldn't believe some folks who got up in groups that I would never have expected! But when Ron said we need all the men up here.....they listened! We vacation with the same families every year at the beach. We are definitely hiring Ron again next summer......we don't have an occasion......just because we all had so much fun.

David has been teaching me guitar for a little over a month now. I have already seen great advances in my technique, rhythm, and understanding of music. I have been playing guitar for 9 years off and on, and I have never had professional lessons. I can say that after a month with David, I am playing better than I ever have and believe that my guitar playing skills will continue to progress rapidly with David's help. His teaching technique is very casual and fun, almost conversational, and his insights are spot on. He is exactly what I hoped for in an instructor when I started looking at guitar lessons and I would highly recommend him for anyone who loves guitar, regardless of their skill level. He is a 'must hire' professional!

We hired Tom for our wedding reception. Tom was an entertainer like no other I have seen at a wedding or event. His combination of DJ and musician really wow'ed the guests at our wedding. Tom had ALL of our guests (friends & family of all ages) dancing for the ENTIRE reception. He had uncles who don't usually leave their seats at such events dancing until the final song! He played every song we identified as a "must have" and mixed in his own singing/instrumentals seamlessly. He is super talented and was extremely pleasant to work with.We were totally impressed with his performance and recommend him 100% without reservation.

Christie was my piano music teacher for several years. Before we met with Christie, my mom had spent several years looking for a teacher who was not only a true professional but would be able to guide a student of any age and skills. Christie's skill is unparalleled and she was able to quickly recognize my strong points as well as my weak points. I was able to study not only classical music but jazz, improvisation, as well as music theory. I still play the piano regularly in my church and Christie's lessons stay with me and help me improve to this day.

During the preparations for our wedding in 2012, we received recommendations about the beautiful and talented Jazz vocalist/songwriter, Gabriela Martina, from friends of ours. After a fantastic evening at a jazz club in New York and a short meeting with Gabriela Martina, our choice was made right then and there! We just wanted HER for this special day in our life!!! And it was definitively the right decision! Our song requests for the wedding ceremony such as our favorite love songs from stars like Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, Bette Middler etc. were not a problem at all for Gabriela Martina and she adjusted her repertoire wonderfully and seemed very accommodating to our wishes. People sat with tearful eyes and deeply touched hearts during the whole ceremony. I will never forget this moment in my life. We asked RED VELVET SOUNDS to play some more smooth jazz, light swing music while our guests were having dinner and later for the party they came out with funky, groovy and soulful songs that fit perfect! They seemed very open and flexible in terms of music genre and cleary - we had a blast! Thanks RED VELVET SOUNDS for a very professional performance in any way and your wonderful voice, Gabriela Martina: you guys made our big day unforgettable for everyone!

I've worked with Christian on multiple occasions in the studio and on various gigs. He is an incredibly talented and humble musician. He puts his heart into everything he plays and it shows within the first few minutes of meeting him. Christian also has an excellent sense for musical direction and is able to make all the other musicians feel at ease and excited to be playing. Not only is Christian a great musician but also a fun and caring guy to everyone. I highly recommend him for lessons, gigs, studio sessions, and musical direction.

Sam is our 8 year old son's drum teacher, but he is the best drum teacher I could imagine for any aged learner. He is responsible about scheduling and a good communicator each week. More importantly, I am beyond impressed by the rapport that Sam has with all people, especially in our case, our son. He treats him seriously as a musician in the way he talks to him and when they jam together. There is no condescending attitude about teaching a little kid; Sam makes the most of every lesson and keeps him playing and engaged right up to the minute. Even more, 10 minutes after each lesson, we get a personal itunes email with a practice song or rhythm that is personalized just for our son! Summer scheduling could be a little tricky, but that worked both ways. I only hope that our rave review does not contribute to our losing Sam as a teacher, because he would be very hard to replace.

Felix is a great guitar instructor! He has the knowledge, skills, and sensitivity to teach students of all ages and levels. Personable and enthusiastic, Felix communicates concepts and techniques very well. He is an amazing and inspiring guitarist who teaches the fundamentals while, at the same time, encourages exploration and personal expression. I have been taking private lessons from Felix for a number of years and I know first-hand of his ability and willingness to provide exceptional instruction in a wide range of musical styles and genres tailored to the individual student’s interest. In my case, due to having an eclectic musical taste, Felix tutors me in various categories which include: folk, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, reggae, both classic and contemporary rock, and even some classical. I learn from him using both acoustic and electric guitar. Very soon after first taking lessons from Felix he began teaching me soloing techniques right alongside strumming rhythms. Felix, a Berklee School of Music alum, is an incredibly talented and passionate guitarist held in high regard among his peers. He is a natural teacher capable of effectively instructing the beginner, intermediate, and advanced level student in equal measure. With his vast knowledge Felix offers informed instruction on reading and transcribing music, theory, and composition for those students who wish to delve that deep in their study. Felix is patient, thorough, and encouraging in his teaching approach. As a long-term pupil of Felix’ I give him my highest recommendation.

My son started taking cello lessons with Elena when he was 9. He has progress from being a complete novice to being able to play Vivaldi's Cello Concerto in C Major in just over a year. She emphasizes good posture and hand positions, which are very important to building long term success. Elena has a very calm and patient teaching style. She is an active cello performing artist herself, so she can demonstrate the technique or musicality during the lesson to make it easier for my son to follow. I highly recommend her!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
