Retirement, in particular, can be a great time to begin lessons, affording time for practice that might prove difficult for those managing careers and families. I highly recommend Melissa's teaching for students of all ages and levels. Melissa has taught me weekly for 3 years now, 8 months in her studio and 4 months via weekly FaceTime or Skype sessions. When I first started, I could decipher and then memorize the first page of several songs, and that was not fulfilling. Now, thanks to Melissa's insightful weekly lessons, the sessions are always fun, productive, and exactly paced for where you are that day in the learning process. And, OMG, I can read and play!!! There is never any pressure and home assignments are custom crafted, with recordings as needed, to allow continuing advancement as your time allows. There are no 'recitals', instead, every other month Melissa hosts a food and drink 'pot luck' social that just happens to include a piano, and students, that just happen to sit and play, as desired. Melissa is a great teacher and has a wonderful, long-term following of students. It's a fun time...

I write as an adult student returning to piano lessons after many years. I could not have selected a more perfect piano teacher than Melissa. Her teaching strategies, encouragement and humor make the learning experience rewarding. Lessons are paced according to individual learning styles. In place of recitals she hosts 'piano socials', which have created a wonderful community among students. What we have in common regardless of individual proficiency is a love for our music lessons and how the piano has enriched our lives. Melissa Harris is a great piano teacher. She thinks carefully about how to communicate with each individual student and helps us to improve our playing step by step. She is very supportive when it comes time to perform a piece. She seeks out interesting music appropriate to our level of capability, a big task in itself.
