Jen Royle recently catered a bereavement buffet brunch for our family. From our very first conversation, I knew I had found the right person for the event. The food she prepared was delicious and the presentation was perfect. Working with Jen was such a pleasure. She was so thoughtful and supportive given the sadness of the occasion. She took any worries about the brunch right out of our hands. She was there for us during a tough time and we look forward to having her back for a happier event at some point in the future.

Sara , Daniel and Richard came into our home and we turned our kitchen over to them. By the end of the evening party, they felt like family to us! The food was amazing and the presentation was visually beautiful! Our guests sent us notes afterwards praising the food and caterers!! They were GREAT!!

Chris performed a superb post prom party service for us: for 30 kids, in the late evening he provided a hot and cold buffet from 10.30pm until 1am and returned at 6.30am to provide a superb cooked breakfast for the same group, through to 9am. His food was excellent, well prepared, presented and served. He and his assistants were well organized and calm when dealing with change requests (an example being when the kids arrived hungry and 45 minutes early from the Prom, when Chris was still setting up, no problem). We would have no hesitation in recommending Chris for such events and others.

Daniel was amazing from the very beginning. He worked exactly within our budget and he was incredibly responsive throughout the whole process. I felt comfortable going to him with any questions we had. The food was absolutely delicious and there was plenty of it. The buffet was set up beautifully. The servers were always on hand but invisible. I would recommend Daniel to anyone that asks me for a caterer. And if I have any future large parties, I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again. Thank you for an amazing evening Daniel!

A fantastic five-course meal for me and my guests. Hosted in the chef's home, we were able to learn about each course, the ingredients and preparation. Crème brulee was outstanding and prepared at the table. In between courses, we examined some older kitchen implements in the chef's kitchen and enjoyed reminiscing about our mothers' and grandmothers' kitchens. Meat was cooked exactly to personal specifications and everything was delicious. This is an experience not to be missed!

I recently worked with John for my daughters bridal shower, The entire experience was great. Meeting to discuss what my vision was for the shower and following through to make that vision a reality. I had told John I wanted a rustic country picnic but a little fancy. He put together a fabulous buffet of upscale mini sandwiches, a vegetable slaw and two salads. Everything absolutely delicious! His attention to detail I truly appreciated also. The presentation of every dish was lovely. First rate, I would highly recommend.

We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with a casual outdoor dinner buffet for 30 adults and 3 children. William listened to our preferences carefully and created a beautiful and delicious menu of passed hors d'oeuvres, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees, and a wonderful dessert table of fresh fruit, hazelnut cake and pistachio panna cotta. The food was wonderful! Many guests remarked about how good everything was. His serving team set up and served with style and charm and cleaned up beautifully. We highly recommend William and will use him again and again! He is a great communicator and chef.

My company has used Hostess Catering for dinner 4 nights a week for over year. They are flexible, professional, creative and dependable. It's very hard to satisfy a large group every night with many different tastes, diets and eating habits. These ladies always come up with a fun menu every week that appeals to meat lovers and vegetarians. Hostess even catered our Holiday Party in December of 2014 and did all the planning from menus to table settings to waitstaff. They worked hard and I looked like a Super Star! These women do a knock out job and no job is too big for them to handle.

SYB provided a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch buffet for our office of 50 employees. Soraya was on time, professional, and accommodating and the food was delicious! I received incredible feedback from our employees (although words were not needed when I saw them going back for seconds, thirds, fourths...)! We will definitely being using her again for our corporate catering needs.

I used Lori's catering services for a small get together and birthday party for about 30 people. Since I was a novice at party giving, Lori was very good about checking in with me along the way and making suggestions about both the menu and the setup. We had more than enough food which had been a particular worry of mine since I could not picture amounts. The party was for noon on a Sunday and I elected to do sort of a blend between a brunch and a lunch. In particular, the strata, mango salad and berry fruit salad were the most popular and I found that the dressings, sauces and spreads that accompanied the food were what added to the uniqueness of the ham, rolls and other salads. Everything was tasty and fresh. The delivery person was on time and helpful with food placement as it was a buffet style. The dishes were all set to go on platters and we supplied the serving utensils and beverages. I would certainly recommend Lori for whatever occasion you might need these services.

Shamia provided a delicious buffet for my son's wedding brunch for 15 people. She even took the time to transfer additional food onto her serving platters to make everything look just right. People loved the food, which included beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, an arugula, goat cheese and pear salad, a roasted sweet potato and mango salad, two kinds of delicious frittatas (which the bride said were the best she had ever tasted), and potatoes au gratin. She also prepared a two-layer green-tea cake with buttercream and coconut frosting that was perfection. She brought a lovely server, Paula, with her to handle all the details of prepping, keeping things fresh, and cleaning up. We had mountains of leftovers, and everyone was delighted.

We hired Nick and his team for our wedding this past August. I cannot sing enough praise for him and his entire team! He handled this brides nerves in stride and provided the utmost amazing service to all of our guests! The food was phenomenal and the demeanor and interactions of everyone on his team was top-notch! Nick even saved the day and ran behind the scenes to grab the wedding rings we forgot to hand off to the best man! Hands down impeccable service, presentation, and an outstanding overall experience with Nick and his team! -Kate & Andrew

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

We first saw their catering services with very competitive pricing, we decided to pay the restaurant a visit. The interior is very well done and the food qualify is very good. We got in touch and proceeded to book them for our baby's welcoming party. The Thumb Tack online response is quick, we also got in touch with the owner. We changed the menu and selection three times and they provided confirmation and delivered on-time. Will hire again and will probably dine there. Highly recommend.

We worked with Kris from Harding Catering for our company's open house. He was extremely communicative, arrived early, and our customers and friends had many excellent comments on the food. Presentation and quality obviously mean a lot to this company. Thank you for making our event of about 100 people nearly effortless!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
