Bobby was great. He gave me a quote and didn't look to change it even though the scope had changed. He was on time when he said he would be and did the installation without a hitch.

Thank goodness for Remy! our furnace stopped working just before a big snowstorm and we were in trouble with a toddler and a new baby. Remy gave a very reasonable quote and above and beyond by driving through a blizzard to get to our house. He was quick and very pleasant. When he left, we had a nice toasty house.

A&M Services just finished fixing my steam boiler/furnace & radiator issue at my home in Roxbury. Our heating sysem and furnace is very old and it's a little scary to let just anyone work on it. Thank goodness I can say the service they provided was freaking amazing!!! On the coldest day of the year thus far, the boiler decided to stop working? ...aaargh. Each time I looked at the thermostat, the temperature inside the house dropped another 2 degrees. That was no fun. I honestly don't know how they got here so fast but they did and I'm glad for it. Professional, knowledgable and skilled describes this company best. And the cost did not burn a hole in my pocket either. I have been trying to find a company to replace my other guy and finally my search is over; what a damn relief. When I'm ready to change to a newer boiler I already know who I'm going to call. Thank you A&M for all your help today!

Chris was awesome with installation of dishwasher and garbage disposal at my place. He went beyond agreed project work and opened clogged sink and changed shut off valve AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. To keep my review short, I found him friendly, honest, committed, responsible and reasonable. He is my go to guy for any such future projects.

Highly recommend. Lewis was able to find a tech to come out to repair our furnace on a freezing New Years Eve. The tech was ready to come off work but agreed to come out and help us. He went above and beyond to try to repair our furnace. We ended up needing a new part but he came back to install it and again worked very hard and got us our heat back. Very reasonable price as well.

I was impressed with Pat’s passion and enthusiasm for replacing my gas furnace in an affordable manner but with professional, specific attention to my house. When he and his crew showed up to do the work, they were thorough and kept me in the loop as the work progressed. They know their stuff. This is a young company that has earned my respect and I will be calling on them for future work.

We hired Chris to complete a washer/gas dryer install in our basement. A lot of plumbers gave us the run around on the install and advised of solutions that would not meet our needs for our old house. Chris suggested an install that was in line with what we had wanted. He was able to complete the job at a lower cost than all other estimates. Chris showed up on a time and communicated any other issues along the way. We purchased our washer and dryer after the initial install and Chris was able to come back and complete the hook up for us. No more laundromat trips for us!

Though we were dismayed to learn our new home's furnace was NOT 14yrs old but 1972, we were very happy with Jonathan's knowledge of this old system and reassurance we cam keep it going. He explained the pilot system and everything to us and even came right in testing CO levels all around. Will definitely use him in the future.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

The leaking under the kitchen sink was minor but we had no idea what caused it. Fortunately Ladd Plumbing came to help. They were able to identify the source of the problem, a washer installed incorrectly, perhaps during the garbage disposal installation. It was a small plumbing job and it was in an area where parking was difficult. The guys came on time for the job and was very professional in solving the problem. Thank you very much for the help.

I am thoroughly impressed with the service I received from Dave and his crew at CMS Plumbing. They were always prompt, kept promises, and were easy to work with regarding my project. I had allocated $3,000 for my plumbing needs during my construction, and Dave kept it within a few hundred dollars. During the project, we ran into an issue regarding a drainpipe, and his crew was excellent at resolving the problem within two hours. I highly recommend CMS plumbing for any plumbing and heating needs.

Overall, this was a most positive experience. He did the HVAC work on a historic house owned by a volunteer organization. We had to have asbestos removed in a short time frame and then he showed up the next day with new heating ducts. It was a pleasure to work I with him and we liked that he was an independent contractor. He did some pretty difficult work, installing in ancient crawl spaces, and did a wonderful job. He took the needs of our organization into account and treated us with respect and fairness. He is an experienced professional who more than lived up to our expectations. Also, did work in a timely manner and was most reliable.

I came across "Thumbtack" by accident. Like many people, I googled what I needed done and "Thumbtack" appeared on the screen. I told myself "ok, I'll try it" and get a better idea on the cost to replace a bathroom double sink counter and new fixtures. Within 24 hours I received 5 responses with estimates. Why did I choose Anthony? 1. His response time was fast and professional. 2. His experience and knowledge on many different facets in the renovation field from electric, plumbing, woodworking and tile was impressive. 3. His price was right for my budget! Anthony arrived on time with all the appropriate tools to do the job. Anthony is very friendly and put my worries at ease. He was very patient with all the questions I asked. Anthony completed the job and I also asked him to replace a phone jack with a new outlet. He was very happy to oblige. I would highly recommend Anthony to anyone who would like to update a space, any electrical or plumbing work. I definitely will be contacting Anthony in the future. Thank you Anthony for a JOB WELL DONE! Sincerely, C. Fowler

Curt and his team were nothing short of amazing. They installed a brand new 3 zone heating and cooling system - including all the duct work, equipment, and removal of 100+ year old cast iron radiators + pipes - in just 2 weeks. The type of system he recommended is fairly unique (forced air over hot water coil) and I was not familiar with it. The quality of the conditioned air is way beyond expectations. They started early in the morning and worked tirelessly all day. Curt also did some quick plumbing repairs at my other property and did a terrific job. I have had several contractors in the house since the system was installed and they all want his contact info so they can partner with him in the future. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Prestige Heating and Cooling!!!

Peter from Belmont Plumbing was great! I contacted him through Thumbtack for a quote and he answered back quickly. I hired him to replace a gas dryer vent to bring matters up to code. He also installed a hand held shower. Peter came to do the job the same week he quoted me for the job. He was punctual, very personable and neat! I would surely hire him for future plumbing projects. He was more reasonable then two other quotes that I had received.

Quickly found the problem with the furnace and fixed it

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
