Great experience. We had Fix Air come to service our central air. It was in the middle of the heat wave and he came the same day we contacted him. He was honest, professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and reliable. He really knows his stuff. He showed me what needed to be done and explained everything. Not much more you can ask for when hiring someone. Our air is now working great!

I hired Farrell to fix my central air conditioning system that had broken down. Dan Farrell was very professional, courteous, and easy to work with. He came out of his way to help me as soon as possible on a very hot day. Once here he diagnosed and repaired the problem quickly. I am very satisfied with his work.

We have a central air/heat system on our second floor and baseboard heating only on our first floor. Remy and his crew are very professional. They truly want to solve your problem without making recommendations for work that isn't needed. Work done: Maintenance on central air conditioning +Installation of ductless system (first floor and basement). I would recommend to anyone looking for help with their HVAC system(s).

I heard from the owner, Mark, very shortly after I posted on Thumbtack. I needed a new heating and cooling system installed, and he responded so quickly and was able to come out the next day to give me a quote. He was even able to fit me in the following week, and my new AC has been a lifesaver. The whole time he was communicative and Jason, the main installer, was awesome. Super friendly, professional, tidy with the work- everything I was hoping for. Highly recommended.

Henry Ortiz is a saint. My AC stopped working today - hottest day of the year! I called someone that was referred to me as well as putting in a request on Thumbtack. The guy that first came out told me it was a controller and would not be able to get one until Monday. I messaged Rite Temp that I need a controller and if he could do it sooner than Monday I would go with them. Henry called me all confused and said that did not sound right. After explaining to him what was going on, Henry offered to walk me through what he thought the problem was. Over the phone, free! Turns out the pan safety switch triggered because the water was not going out. He told me what to do and it fixed it. What a guy. I am sending him something anyway. He could have said he'd be there tomorrow but I had mentioned that my wife was ill and it being the hottest stretch of the year coming up, he did not hesitate to help me. He was brought up right. Thank you Henry and RITE AID HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING CO.

Marvis was excellent. I am fully satisfied with his service. He knows his job well, replaced our natural gas water heater with new one without any issues. He also helped me to pick it from Home Depot. I will definitely recommend him to my friends and will rehire if the need arise. Thanks Marvis! 👍🏻

Ed came out on a Sunday evening within one hour of posting during a heatwave and fixed a blown compaciter and recharged refrigerant. Amazing customer service, super polite, and educated me on the current status of our equipment and what to expect in the future. I will work only with Ed in the future and fully endorse him as a first pick for anyone who needs any service on their home air conditioning or heating systems, thank you Ed, you're awesome

We had a new heating system put in as well as a tankless hot water heater. They also upgraded our electrical panel and put in an electric baseboard in our foyer. The guys were punctual, extremely professional and knowledgeable. I recently had an extremely experienced contactor come through for an unrelated project and he said the work that Three Brothers did was some of the best that he had seen in years. I am more than pleased with the outcome! Highly recommend!

North Shore HVACR was a lifesaver, the AC was gone in two rental units. Another contractor had transportation issues getting the job done (it happens), however we were now in a heat wave the day before the 4th of July. Lewis' team came to the rescue, even on the holiday, and had both units cooling off our great tenants in no time. This level of professional dependability is a treasured asset.

Tim did a great job-he came right over, knew what was wrong, and fixed my air conditioning. He showed and explained to me what needed to be done and answered all my questions. I will call him again in the spring when I need to replace the system. His prices were fair and I appreciated his concern about my comfort during a heat wave.

It was late July, 95 degrees and very humid. My air conditioning unit wasnt working. We reach out to Topknotch and they came out the same day and fixed the issue. I would highly recommended this company. Getting same day service in the heart of summer is nearly impossible.

Brian was great. He worked quickly and efficiently and was able to diagnose and fix our problem. He also made good recommendations about what we would likely need to do in the future. Would highly recommend All Cooling and Heating LLC!

I needed a chimney liner and new water heater to sell my home. I got a quote from another company and they asked for a ridiculous amount of money and included a lot of work that didn't need to be done. I called Mullineaux Heating & Air Conditioning and they gave me a very reasonable quote. I hired them to do the work and they did an amazing job. It was done quickly and passed all inspections. Scott (the owner) took the time to explain everything to me and answered all my questions. I would absolutely hire them again and have referred them to some friends who all agreed that they are a great company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
