My experience with John Courney was, sad to say, VERY bad. He's a nice man but a hopeless workman. He arrived on 24 October to collect my painted Victorian wrought iron garden feature (known as a "wellcap") to be sand blasted and repainted. He quoted a price of between $150 and $250 and said that he could complete the job in 3 days max. I have myself had experience with this sort of work and told him then and there that he could not do what I knew was going to be a complicated job for such a small sum and that I would top him up when he returned the finished work. Meanwhile, I gave him $300 to pay for the sand and the equipment rental. Three days later, the excuses started pouring in: too hard; bad weather; taking longer than I thought; needed more sand, and on and on. He continued to postpone, blaming everyone but himself until, 18, repeat 18 days after he took it, I told him to return the well cap, finished or not. (To be candid, I was not at all sure that he wasn't simply going to keep it). When he brought it, the work done was a) not complete and b) shabby in the extreme. In addition, he charged me for the machine rental for the full 18 days ($1,000) he had my well cap which, on the face of it, was absurd not to say more. Conclusion: I don't know what John is capable of but he clearly knows nothing about paint removal and not much about spray painting. And equally bad, he knows nothing about cost estimates and sticking to a timeline and a budget. Do I think I was badly done by? Why yes, very badly. I repeat, he was friendly and perhaps even honest in his own way but I bitterly regret having hired him. The work he did was worse than useless.
Courtney Property Maintenance/ Handyman services's reply
This man who wrote this review was extremely demanding and knows nothing about restoration work. This job was very complicated it took me a lot longer than I anticipated due to weather and the level of ornate detail on the piece, these are not excuses they are facts. I truly regret ever taking the job in the first place, in the end this job cost me money out of pocket, I have never had a bad review or a un satisfied client. When I explained to the client that it was going to take me longer than expected he demanded that I bring the well cap back to him finished or not!!! I hate an unfinished job but he was being unreasonable so I returned it to him and asked him to just pay for the machine rental. I ended up paying $300 out of pocket for the rental. I wish that I was able to finish this job but it was not an option.

We hired John Courtney to do shelving in the basement. When we spoke, John came across very knowledgeable while with his background (on Thumbstack: he says, his expertise is carpentry) we thought we had the right person for the job. But it did not turn out that way. The job he did was far from what we discussed and quality was below expectations. He struggled to make very simple shelves. He put doors to one section of the selves and the doors are crooked and wide apart. John was very tardy and always late (by a couple hours) and that ended the two days’ work as agreed into four days. At the end, he even left all the trash in the basement and did not clean the work area. I wish the last feedback would have come before we started work with John. I think John is learning to work and is no way close to being an expert. He seems a nice person but not sure if he can lead a project.

I hired john to install a mailbox post for me but I was unable to get the supplies, he offered to go get the supplies with me with his truck and installed it in less than 2 hours! I even used him the next day to mow my lawn! Recommended!

John was hired to perform handyman/ electrical work (wiring) for my company. He did an outstanding job. He is responsive, a hard worker and worked extra hours to get the job done right. He was very meticulous. I'd recommend John any day and we will definitely hire him if need be again.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I feel I am very fair and competitive with pricing, my customer reviews support this. I will never quote over the phone as I feel it is a disservice to the client.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I prefer to talk over the phone to discuss in detail the scope of the project. Then I'd recommend an on-site walk through to go over the details and expectations. My main priority is to ensure that the client is getting exactly what they want, and that the client is happy with the end result.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am experienced in full carpentry work, from framing to finish detail. These skills were learned throughout the years from working with larger contractor companies. I am near completion of a Home Inspectors program, expected licensure Fall, 2016.
