Omar and Rob moved our piano with great care and professionalism. They were extremely careful in moving the 600lb piano up 15 difficult steps. They were kind, courteous, and polite enough to answer all of our questions. The move took 2 hrs and I heard not one complaint from them. I would highly recommend All-Pro and would call them again without hesitation. Thanks Omar and Rob!!

Jay and his crew far exceeded our expectations. The closing date changed on us a week before the move and Jay was able to be flexible enough to make it all work anyway. We used both their packing services and their local move services. Every one from First-Rate was just that, first-rate. They were professional, friendly, courteous and polite...down to earth and easy to communicate with. We thought there would be no way to fit our whole house belongings in (2) 26 foot trucks but with Jay's masterful packing skills we were totally impressed with how accurate the quote ended up being... obviously, not their first rodeo. We had specific labels on the boxes with the hopes that all of our things would be brought to the rooms in the new house that we wanted... and they were very conscientious to do that. It is making the unpacking so much easier to do. Our items were moved with care, right to the spots we wanted them. We have used other movers in the past, but we would highly recommend Jay and his company to any of our friends, family (and have already). We'd use them again in a heart beat! Thanks for making this part of our moving experience the most pleasant it could be.

Overall they did a great job! Fast, efficient and friendly. They did a good job wrapping and padding our furniture and went the extra mile to strategically pack all of our belongings into the moving truck as we were making a local move They accidentally dropped a box of liquor and a filing cabinet and reimbursed us without hassle. I would recommend Born to move without reservation.

Great job! A local move (around 6 blocks down). One and a half bedrooms had been moved and packed an unpacked in a very short period of time. I highly recommend Eric for your next moving job.

John and his team did an excellent job with wrapping and protecting my furniture, even though it was a local move. The job ran longer than the original quote, but he was fair with the final price and all went well.

Spartan Movers did an excellent job of making our local moving experience, which could have been stressful, a breeze. They arrived on time, communicated effectively, followed our guidance without confusion, wrapped everything appropriately, and packed and unpacked efficiently. I'd hire them again.

Mike and his team were amazing. Lamar, Jamie and Nate were kind, fast, helpful and funny! Moving is the worst and having a team who keeps a positive attitude and vibe makes a huge difference. Because I booked late, they had to rent a truck from uhaul in the morning which did impact our start time - but they did a tremendous job on my five mile local move with complicated furniture and random box sizes. They even installed my a/c and did a great job setting up furniture. These guys are awesome!

I moved a 1 a bedroom with 2 movers and it took us about 3 hours. The experience was great considering moving is one of the most stressful tasks in life. Artem and Dimitri were very professional and very swift. They wrapped everything to protect the furniture and provided me with help setting up. Nothing was dinged or broken. I also had a very large, very heavy air conditioner that they moved for me which I really appreciated. If I ever moved again I would request them because they were that good. Kate who helped me schedule was also really quick and precise with responses. I would definately use this service again and would highly recommend. Thank you Top Rank Movers!!!!

We had a great experience with John and John. They were able to perfectly fit our one-bedroom apartment into a small moving truck with no problems whatsoever. They didn't bat an eye when it started to torrentially downpour about 15 minutes into the job - these guys were serious troopers. On time and prompt communicators leading up to moving day. Would absolutely recommend.

I recently moved into a new apartment and had several jobs to be completed such as hanging curtain rods, fixtures, pictures, etc. Paul completed all the projects I had with in a timely manner with quality workmanship. Great customer service and customer service. I would highly recommend and use 99 Handy again for future projects.

These guys were awesome. Every other place quoted me a price then added all these extraneous fees after we had chatted for a bit. Round The Clock Moving was also available at 7pm, which was really important for us because we got off a plane at 5pm! They were super efficient and professional.

I had a great move with Flash -- they were very communicative and answered all my questions leading up to the move. They were prompt, polite, and professional on the moving day, even through the temps were creeping up on 90. ( Thanks again you guys! ) I especially appreciated that when my couch didn't fit up the stairs, they were able to hoist it up and over the porch and through the door. That could have been really stressful but they handled it so smoothly it didn't even feel like a hiccup. I would hire again.

I wanted to share the awesome experience I had with Poseidon Moving on Wednesday. Chris, Elly, Amir, and Vlad moved us from Medford, MA to Kingston, RI. They were ruthlessly efficient (carrying three boxes at a time kind of efficient), respectful of our homes and our belongings, and nice people. On top of that, they were very fair with pricing, which I really appreciated. I saw the 120 or so five star reviews Poseidon had on Yelp and didn’t really believe it (how can movers be that good?), but now I get it. Thank you for making a stressful experience easy for us.

First I should say that this moving company really saved us in the aspect of the time I called them, they were willing and able to work with me on such short notice. Second, the guys that moved our stuff (which was 2 trucks full to the brim) worked their tales off. Third, we had everything accounted for and arrive, even when everything was moved to and from storage.

Stanley did an excellent job moving a large item for us. It was a huge pain every step of the way due to our floor layout, but he took the time to do it right and completed exactly what I asked for. I recommend and will use Stanley again if I need any of his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
