Dan arrived on time, and was very professional and helpful throughout the whole appointments. Since we are first time homeowners, as he was doing the cleaning himself, he really took the time to show us what are the regular maintenance steps that we should do on a yearly basis to our furnace. His price was very reasonable and I will be sure to contact Farrell Heating & Air again when spring time comes around so they can check on our AC unit!

I hired Mark on an urgent notice to replace/install a new gas water heater as the old one was leaking. He promptly responded with a generous offer with a surprisingly affordable pricing (lower than other estimates from the site). He met my demands for a high quality, professional and neat in a timely manner. I was happy with the result. Mark held my high regards for future projects.

Amazing, amazing job done, for years no one could figure out what was wrong with my central air, company after company came in to diagnose, everyone told me I needed to basically start from scratch ($30,000 I didn't have). So many hot, sweltering summers went by. Finally I couldn't take it anymore, with the recommendation to Remy came I decided to give it one more try. Remy came in fixed everything, and no I didn't need a whole new system and I paid no where near $30,000, and now am happy, cool, and not broke. Thanks so much will recommend Remedy Cooling & Heating to EVERYONE!!!!!!

I heard from the owner, Mark, very shortly after I posted on Thumbtack. I needed a new heating and cooling system installed, and he responded so quickly and was able to come out the next day to give me a quote. He was even able to fit me in the following week, and my new AC has been a lifesaver. The whole time he was communicative and Jason, the main installer, was awesome. Super friendly, professional, tidy with the work- everything I was hoping for. Highly recommended.

Henry Ortiz is a saint. My AC stopped working today - hottest day of the year! I called someone that was referred to me as well as putting in a request on Thumbtack. The guy that first came out told me it was a controller and would not be able to get one until Monday. I messaged Rite Temp that I need a controller and if he could do it sooner than Monday I would go with them. Henry called me all confused and said that did not sound right. After explaining to him what was going on, Henry offered to walk me through what he thought the problem was. Over the phone, free! Turns out the pan safety switch triggered because the water was not going out. He told me what to do and it fixed it. What a guy. I am sending him something anyway. He could have said he'd be there tomorrow but I had mentioned that my wife was ill and it being the hottest stretch of the year coming up, he did not hesitate to help me. He was brought up right. Thank you Henry and RITE AID HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING CO.

A&M Services just finished fixing my steam boiler/furnace & radiator issue at my home in Roxbury. Our heating sysem and furnace is very old and it's a little scary to let just anyone work on it. Thank goodness I can say the service they provided was freaking amazing!!! On the coldest day of the year thus far, the boiler decided to stop working? ...aaargh. Each time I looked at the thermostat, the temperature inside the house dropped another 2 degrees. That was no fun. I honestly don't know how they got here so fast but they did and I'm glad for it. Professional, knowledgable and skilled describes this company best. And the cost did not burn a hole in my pocket either. I have been trying to find a company to replace my other guy and finally my search is over; what a damn relief. When I'm ready to change to a newer boiler I already know who I'm going to call. Thank you A&M for all your help today!

We had a new heating system put in as well as a tankless hot water heater. They also upgraded our electrical panel and put in an electric baseboard in our foyer. The guys were punctual, extremely professional and knowledgeable. I recently had an extremely experienced contactor come through for an unrelated project and he said the work that Three Brothers did was some of the best that he had seen in years. I am more than pleased with the outcome! Highly recommend!

We had been having various issues with our heat for a couple of months. Lewis called us back to setup the appointment within half an hour and arrived at the scheduled time. I appreciated that he took the time to review all of the problems and come up with a solution, rather than just trying to get in and out as quickly as possible. Once he found the problem (a previous company had left our heating system at a much too high pressure which had damaged components), he thoroughly explained his solution and then came back the next morning and fixed everything. Our heating system, which hasn't worked correctly in months, is now working perfectly. I only wish we had called NSHVAC/R sooner. We will certainly be continuing to use their services in the future.

Errol came to my house the night before to look around my heating system. Gave me a really good price and next day him and his partner stopped by and did an excellent job and left everything super clean. Also, as they were performing the work, they answered all my questions. I will no longer look at any other company for this project. I’m thankful.

Extremely pleased with the work Jason and Mike did for our home. They cleaned the vents, more thoroughly than I imagined, as well as replaced our bathroom vent ducts that ran through the attic. A mouse had eaten his way into one of the fan vent ducts and set up winter quarters. Jason also thoroughly cleaned the clothes dryer vent much more thoroughly than had been done by another individual just two years prior. They were very careful about not banging walls and wore slippers when in the house. My wife and are recommend them unconditionally. (P.S. we had not realized that the original building construction crew had used the heating/AC ducts as convenient trash receptacles.)

I have to share this experience. I am 74 years old living in Concord, MA. with my grandson after his parents and my husband passed. I have relied on the same service companies since my home was purchased 40 years ago. The solar panel company left holes in my home which let cold air in my basement back room (discovered by this companies plumbing foreman responding to my emergency call) which caused my heating pipes to freeze 3 days ago after a week straight of extreme cold. I had to shut the water off to my house not knowing what else to do and tried to clean all the water soaked carpets and ruined possessions in my finished basement. I called my plumbing company of 39 YEARS!!! and was told by the service a man could not be sent for 3-4 weeks. My homes temperature was dropping fast to 54 degrees. I called countless plumbers in a 60 mile radius, either they couldn't come or nobody called me back. Its now day 3 my oven is on high and electric heaters wont bring the temperature above 35 degrees, I was FREEZING and now snowed in. My grandson found thumbtack. Vincent was the only one to respond. Here is why I am posting this story. I was desperate, freezing and scared to death after hearing of the temperature drops expected after the snow storm, minus 5. Vincent sent an offer to assist by email and stated he didn't know when he could get a man to my home but PROMISED he would get here. I sent my number back and he called right away from another job and told me not to worry, someone WILL BE THERE!!! Told me how he was a former Navy Seal and nothing would stop him from keeping his promise to me. I started to cry uncontrollably, Folks, we couldn't even get to our car to sit inside for heat. I waited, and waited. now the heavy snow was falling, Mayor said emergency vehicles only on roads. Vincent called 5 hours later to say he personally was coming through the snow from 81 miles away. Again I cried and thanked him with every ounce of my being. He PROMISED me he would arrive. He called 2 hours later, I expected bad news, he wanted to ease my worries with reassurance of heat and water again. An hour and a half later at 10:30pm he shows up with a search light on his truck so bright like daylight looking for my house number. He came in and gave me a hug told me everything was going to be o.k. I trusted him. He brought in temporary heat for us (a Godsend right there), 1 hour later he had restored my water service, fixed 3 burst piped and flushed the air from my boiler with this big machine and heat was starting to come up. I will admit I cried so hard my insides hurt. This man risked his life and truck, God forbid he got stuck out there in that cold when he could have chosen to go home and stay safe. He risked so much to come to my aid and when I asked why when ALL OTHERS said no he looked at me and simply said, "it's what I do ma'am". I am so thankful for this wonderful man and Michaels company. I truly don't know what could have happen to us if he hadn't picked up that phone and came to our rescue. I am a religious woman that truly believes God was watching over us this night. May God watch over you Vincent. Thank you for your valiant efforts.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
