Steve helped me assemble furniture for a client. I'm an interior designer and he helped me to assemble a cabinet, 4x barstools and a bar cart. He was efficient, punctual and tidy and most importantly easy to work with. I would highly reccomended him and am planning to use him again to assemble more furniture and hang art and mirrors. You won't be dissapointed!

Erik assembled our IKEA kitchen cabinets. I highly recommend him. His service was outstanding. He showed up on time and was responsive when the job became more complicated than we expected. He was efficient and friendly and the cabinets--now assembled--look great!

Highly recommended! He is very professional and knows and does just about anything. Before selling the house, we hired him to replace many ceiling lights, outdoor lights, kitchen faucets, door casing or trim, bathroom mirrors and lights ... etc.. He does not waste time talking or even take a little break, always going from one project to another. Great workmanship. Price is very reasonable. Money well worth spent! Thanks much, David!

I am a tenant in Worcester in a triple decker. I live on ground floor and have fenced in yard with a dog who loves that sort of thing. Call me spoiled but I got used to that. In the recent high-wind weather, a large 20' section of fence blew over. I discovered the posts were never cemented. Much to my dismay, the landlords did not want to fix the fence. In addition to having a dog I now had to leash walk everywhere, the yard was open to theft where I have a fire pit, grill, patio furniture, etc. I also feared the fallen fence would continue to get damaged and become impossible to salvage at all. I posted on thumbtack and received several replies. Some estimates were so high, they blew my mind. Then there was Billy. Billy wasted no time. He came right out to my apartment. He was empathetic to the fact that I was paying out of pocket on a property that wasn't mine and had a couple ideas on how to keep costs down. He recommended I buy the material. I bought it same day and two days later my fence was dug, poured, and set. The best part is he beat the snow coming and was extremely conscientious of his work. The old fence sections had rotted and worn down to the point where they had to be cut to be re-seated. Billy left full size posts for when those sections need to be replaced. When they are, they will match the height of the posts. I have already recommended Billy to a colleague who renovates and flips houses as a side business. I, myself, work for a General Contractor in Worcester but concrete and fence work was too much for me to tackle myself. I've been around the industry and I know good people when I see them. Billy is a hidden gem. I'd love to keep him the best kept secret I know but I'd be doing him and his work a dissatisfaction. I would recommend him to anyone. Without hesitation.

I hired Joe to build a custom shed in my back yard. I was very pleased with the quality and efficiency of his work and the way he handeled some unexpected modifications to the original design and plan very professionally. During the job, he discovered rotten boards in my deck stairs that he immediately alerted me to and offered to replace, which he did quickly and at minimal cost of time and extra expense. He approached the entire task with a friendly and easy going demeaner while also getting everything done well with urgency. He worked well with us to ensure that we were happy with the modifications to the design along the way and the final product. He continuosly offered creative and resourceful solutions to challenges. His colleague Frank was hard working and clearly very experienced in the craft. I will definitely hire Speranza & Son again.

Russell did an excellent job on our kitchen, bathroom and front door. He went above and beyond to make sure that we were satisfied with the project. He has very good customer service and communication skills and is very easy to work with. Russell was ALWAYS on time, which we appreciated very much and also didn't mind the dogs being here while he worked. We will definitely be hiring him again for future projects.

This is the first time I hired a carpenter for breaking two closets and making a opening between kitchen and living room (it is a baring wall) He is easy to communicate. Came, check and gave quote. from next day they started work and finished within 2 days. Before left they cleaned everything properly and also put some salt on my stairs. My wife and I was amazed. Thanks I got them. I am planning to do some other carpentry works.

We had a bunch of items that needed to get fixed from rotted boards on the deck, hanging a large heavy mirror, replacing broken ceiling light fixtures, a broken kitchen cabinet door hinge, and so on. Tom responded through Thumbtack, we set up a time to meet, he gave me a reasonable quote for the work, and we scheduled the work. He came when he said, stayed on budget, did everything we agreed to, followed up on loose ends to make sure everything was squared away, and cleaned up afterwards. My wife and I are very pleased. We are happy to give Tom Koehane highest marks. He and Kate, who works with him, were great. Thanks.

We loved working with Nivaldo and will use him for future projects in our home. He is always professional, honest and stands by the work he does. We can’t believe how amazing our new bathroom, floors and basement turned out. We were concerned with the fireplace in our kids playroom and he created an adorable custom cover with chalkboard and shelves that they love!

I am so happy that I chose Mark for our kitchen remodel! Mark listened to my ideas and offered his own suggestions and improvements from his past experiences. After working through the layout together Mark's work was superior quality. He has strong attention to detail, and it showed in his cabinet making and installation. I highly recommend Mark for any project and I know we would be delighted to use him again, or know that our recommendation of Mark encouraged others to move forward with Mark! You will not regret it! I am so grateful to have found a customer focused and solution orientated contractor!!

I cannot say enough about my experience with EM Remodeling. Edson gave me a very fair price on several tasks in the house. He and his crew painted a ceiling, created a new railing for our deck, and disassembled and took away a rotting shed in our back yard. He finished all of them very quickly and on time. He and his crew cleaned up to the point that we never even knew they were there! They were so fantastic that we are already lining them up to help with a kitchen remodel. I would recommend them to anyone! Thank you Edson!

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Vicki is the best of the best. We have utilized interior designers before, all with good results, but Vicki is in a class by herself. Her personality, tireless worth ethic, eye for detail, wonderful sense of taste, and her commitment to complete the project that matches your vision to the highest of expectations are all core values of both her personal and professional principles. Vicki gets our highest of recommendations.

Mr Fix It was the contractor I decided to use to remodel my kitchen & bathroom. Mark was extremely helpful with the design and layout of my kitchen and bathroom. We discussed a price, and unless I changed something he did not change me a penny more than the agreed price. He was very helpful in every aspect of the remodel. Him and his subcontractors were very honest. The plumber, Electrian, tile person, and painters were very professional. They did everything I asked for and more. Every night the job left clean and organized. I can’t say enough nice things about Mark and his crews. They did a fantastic job.

I had them replace the roof on the house and garage, install garage doors, all new windows in the house, canned lighting and a new ceiling in the kitchen and several other items, also coming back to paint the house in the spring. The quality of work was excellent and was done in a very timely fashion and the pricing was very fair. overall i am very pleased with everything i had them do. Would highly recommend Paul and his team.

Steven of Boston Tile Solutions saved the day when we needed someone to install tile in our back entryway and lav to go with our recently completed kitchen. Other tile installers made promises, but never followed through. Steven was reliable, honest and skilled. He is also humorous. He did an excellent job, and he finished the project in time for us to host my parents for the holidays. They also were very impressed with the quality of Steven's work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
