The Owl: Test Prep & Math/Science Tutoring
About this pro
In addition to my B.S. in Mathematics (magna cum laude - WSU), my B.S. in psychology (magna cum laude - UMass Amherst) helps me construct learning strategies specifically tailored to the individual student. I also encourage both analytical/logical and creative/metaphorical thought from my students. Incorporating top-down, bottom-up and side-in perspectives encourages deep processing and creates interconnected cognitive structures. This increases understanding and recall. Easy. The challenge of finding the appropriate reframing of difficult concepts and problems to facilitate learning and achieve understanding. The student's look of satisfaction is priceless.
Customers rated this pro highly for value, punctuality, and work quality.

- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Assess the student's strengths, weaknesses, and needs, then structure the tutorial such that the student maximizes his or her potential.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I was trained by The Princeton Review to Teach and tutor SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT test prep. Within 3 years I was awarded "Master Tutor" status for all of these subjects. In addition to degrees in Mathematics and Psychology I have 1.5 years of graduate school credit in Education and 2.5 years of graduate school credit in Cognitive Science. Also, I remain informed as to changes ETS and other testing companies make to their materials!
- How did you get started doing this type of work? This was a gradual process. In high school I discovered my propensity for explaining school work in a manner that helped some of my friends get through their classes. I continued with this informal tutoring throughout college. In graduate school, I learned that I enjoy leading classes as well. Even upon leaving academia to pursue a career in music, I continued tutoring as a part-time endeavor.
