I am a bathroom remodeling contractor in DC and couldn't get to do a bathroom demo and I found Ed's company through Thumbtack and was the top rated service provider on the requests. Service was great and was always able to get into contact with either Ed or one is his managers. Recommend for demo work.

Renaissance Restoration is an incredible company. They do business with integrity, and customer satisfaction as their top priorities. I hired them to do a major kitchen renovation project for my home and I couldn't be happier with the result and the price. From their employees to the owner Antonio Sanchez, they provide a service that is far superior to other renovation companies. I highly recommend Antonio for any project. Antonio has now done a kitchen, a bathroom and a basement for friends that I have referred. His design ideas are fresh and always kept within the ideas and budget of the client. He listened carefully to what I wanted and provided helpful comments and advice. The project moved very smoothly and everything happened just as he said it would. I have been so impressed by their work. They were very friendly, professional and always on time. I noticed significant progress every day, and they did a great job of cleaning up before heading home for the day. They were very responsive to all of the questions, comments and concerns that I had during the entire process. They put the client first, and will do whatever necessary to make your project a reality and to meet your expectations. Antonio provided me with a great lead time and a great price. My kitchen was completed in a week. I'm not only happy that my kitchen looks beautiful, but also that he met the deadline. Antonio was very helpful, and always seemed to be excited about the project, which definitely gave me a feeling that I was in good hands. He definitely went above and beyond. I have no reservations about recommending him to someone looking for a "one stop" restoration company. Renaissance Restoration was nothing but the ultimate example of professionalism, expertise, and customer service during the entire process.

Our experience with Mr. James and his team was very pleasant. All of the guys were very knowledgeable and professional. They handled all permits and inspections necessary to complete the project. We noticed an infestation of mold growth in one of our properties. We were already contemplating remodeling this area of the basement anyway. We decided to not only remediate the mold but also to hang new drywall throughout the entire basement, install about 13 recessed lights with smart motion switches, slate tile flooring, and rough in and install a full bath in the space. James came in and offered my husband and I a lot of different options to reach our desired goal beyond the mold remediation. He also did the bathroom design, and suggested some beautiful tile combinations and we loved them all. In short we decided to go with James to do the work and the project went flawless. Very professional, clean within reason during a renovation, and very organized and personable. He kept us informed at every stage and there were no surprises. They completed the project in about10 days including county inspections. James followed up with us a month after the job was completed to make sure that everything ok. Great customer service!! We will definitely be using Unlimited Resources in the near future and have recommended James and his team to several people already.

Within a week of Sandy and Jeff coming to my house to see what I wanted to have repaired/replaced, they were back with workers to get the job done. The back inside and storm doors were replaced--they found rotted wood when they removed the old doors and fixed that area; they replaced the kitchen ceiling tiles, replaced a coat closet bi-fold door. I am very impressed with the promptness of their response, their completion of the job and very satisfied with their professionalism and how well the job was done. I plan to continue using SRO, Inc. for other repairs and work I need done in my home.

Justin and the BlueStar team did an outstanding job organizing and cleaning my kitchen and family room. Justin replaced doors and ceiling fans through out the house. The work was completed within the time frame I was given at the price I was quoted. I would recommend the BlueStar team to anyone that needs cleaning, organization or reairs.

Absolutely loved MagnifiqueHomes! I moved to Virginia and needed to downsize quite a bit, moving into a much smaller place. Maud was great at utilizing the small space I had to maximum efficiency, making it feel like a home at the same time. She kept me involved in every step -- making it a truly enjoyable experience. I couldn't be happier with this, my first interior design experience. I would definitely recommend MagnifiqueHomes without hesitation.

Collene and her True House Design team staged my 4,500 square foot house to prepare it for sale. I don't think I could have sold my home without their help! The team was fast, effective, artful, and affordable, and the house looked terrific. Moreover they were patient with my many questions and always super friendly. I can't say enough good things about my experience with True House Design.

My husband and I have done renovations on a couple of properties on our own, but I was looking for some assistance with this latest renovation since my husband was deployed. The difference between how this renovation went in comparison to those is shocking – in a good way! Brook with BB Designs & Remodeling helped me in ways I didn’t even know I needed assistance. For example, her suggestion of moving a wall and a window in our living room ended up creating a showcase space that opens beautifully onto our wooded backyard. That kind of pre-construction/design assistance was exactly what I was looking for in a designer!! The vision that she laid out in our original meeting was amazing. After our initial meeting at the property, we sat down and went through various pictures and idea books so that Brook could further hone in on our desired look. She came to the table very organized and had multiple selections for me (lighting, kitchen cabinet pulls, wall colors, etc.), all the while offering her creative suggestions as well. She kept me on track with all the little decisions I had to make. And when I was overwhelmed with the amount of decisions/work to be done, Brook helped to calm me down and focus my attention on just a few things to keep the process moving forward without a high stress level. Brook was able to take us from the pre-construction phase straight through to the final design elements that pull the whole project together. Her help with various trips to tile and hardware stores to pick out the finishes were incredibly helpful!! BB Designs can help with whatever type of project you are looking to do. They can do a spot design if there’s an area of a room that needs assistance, all the way up to being the first in the home getting a major renovation project started. They can help interview and then manage contractors, purchase and receive the pieces, handle the budgets, and do the final design elements and staging. BB Designs & Remodeling can offer you a turn-key renovation experience – taking the stress and headache off of you. Finally, BB Designs & Remodeling’s assistance and expertise will add value to your home – making the investment in their design experience absolutely worth it. They can handle a simple staging of your home to get it ready for the market and have it present well to potential buyers -- to making great value-added changes during a renovation that will increase its market value! I think the change to our living room alone added a wow factor that will easily translate to well over $10k when we go to sell it! I cannot recommend Brook of BB Designs & Remodeling strongly enough. She has been incredibly hard-working, detail-oriented, dedicated, creative, flexible and understanding through our various starts and stops in our project. BB Designs is a company that truly wants to make you happy in your home and their love for their works shines through – they are a joy to work with! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for help with the design and/or renovation of their home.

In March, I hired Collene of Exclusive Creations Design to decorate my office space and training center. I had a special event that I was hosting and had to have the work completed in just under 1 week. She used a few existing pieces that I already had and I gave her carte blanche for the rest. The outcome was phenomenal! I left her with a blank space and when I walked in to the finished product, I felt like I was on a decorating show! I constantly receive complements about the choice of colors and the furnishings. Several months later I enlisted her services again for another studio space and again- it turned out wonderfully. I highly recommend Collene. She does a fantastic job meeting your needs with your budget to create your dream space!

Liza Ryner worked with me to completely design my Adams Morgan condo around three paintings that I wanted to highlight. The result is bright, open, clean, and very livable. With Liza's help I was able to do it all on budget and in good time. She was inspiring to work with and always accountable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
