"He was very professional and friendly. He made me feel like I knew him my whole life lol. The atmosphere is clean and relaxing. He had dim lights, comfortable massage bed, soothing relaxing music, the list goes on. Overall, I felt at home. Some people have a preference for females over male. I don't care to be honest, but he was a Excellent Person to work with. We talked the whole time I got my 60 minutes lymphatic massage done. I told him I HAVE to come back. We definitely bonded and I see why he has regulars coming back for different sessions. I love the fact he has an intake form where you tell him how you feel and what areas he should focus on. He taught me science terms as I was open to learning more about the 'nitty gritty'' of how our bodies react/work to different things, in my case liposuction. Thanks again, Patrick! See you next session :)"

"Having Florence as my massage therapist has truly been a blessing to me. I was referred to her by a friend when I complained about pain in my knee. After two sessions with her, my knee was completely fixed and I was back to full health. She displayed great professionalism and thorough understanding of the body's anatomy as she fixed my knee. Five months on, I can't imagine myself seeing a therapist other than her because I go back home feeling better after every visit. I encourage anyone who needs to be catered for and wants their money's worth out of every massage to try Florence. She is good at what she does. "

"Kerstin at Tranquil Wave Massage Therapy is a sweet, wonderful, and knowledgeable LMT. She knows the pressure points, communicates well (without distracting from the massage), and listens well. I normally judge a massage by how "with it" I am at the end. After an hour with Kerstin, I was so relaxed that I had to lean against the massage table (which is heated) for a moment while getting re-dressed. That is a sign of a good massage. But what really sold me on Kerstin is the following: 1) When you book a 60 minute massage, you get 60 minutes, not 50 like at the chains. 2) Included in the price was a hot towel and a little aromatherapy, both of which may be additional at other places. 3) The heated massage table - that is a big plus. 4) Her skill and politeness. It was definitely one of the best massages I've had, and I left feeling great. 5) It is a few days after my appointment, and I still feel good. Kerstin and Tranquil Waves is a combination of High value + High Knowledge + Kind Personality which equals a Great Massage."

"First and foremost, Heather is very professional. After her personal evaluation, she made sure to customize her massage to my specific medical needs. The perfect amount of pressure. I was not sore afterwards, and I will definitely be using her services in the future! Her schedule is also very accommodating. I cannot say enough good things! I have been to many spas, seen many massage therapists, and I must say, I don't want to use anyone else!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
