I've been taking beginner acoustic guitar lessons this summer with Gregg. He is patient, upbeat, and great at putting together a flexible program that will meet your particular goals. The studio is conveniently located in DC, and guitars available to use during lessons so you don't need to lug your instrument around town.

I started taking voice lessons for the first time at the age of 53 from Sam. My only other musical experiences were singing in a church choir as a teenager and taking piano lessons for a couple of years when I was in middle school. I chose Sam because of his willingness to accept different types of voices and his terrific and positive reviews. I have never questioned my choice. When I started with Sam, my voice was weak. I could basically carry a tune, but definitely not in a public setting and definitely not one that was outside of the middle-of-the-road range. I took lessons so I could feel more confident in my singing ability and improve my voice. Sam started by teaching me how to breath while singing. I’ll admit that it was hard work and not the most exciting, but it has made a huge difference in my ability. My range has been broadened and my voice is much stronger than when I began 8 months ago. During that time we have worked on music theory, rhythm, harmony, different types of music, etc. The key for me is that I have always found Sam very patient and encouraging yet at the same time mindful of the technical expertise needed to improve one’s voice. I highly recommend him for someone like me and definitely for anyone who has a more natural musical talent!

The best thing that I did for my guitar playing ability was hiring Tim. Your first mistake (should you make it) would be to not hire him. If you're looking to improve your overall skill, do yourself the favor of working with Tim. I have been working with Tim for about 2 years now and have seen drastic improvement in my ability to play. I began as a curious beginner and am now playing at a really comfortable level. To begin, Tim is really easy going and down to earth. He easily relates to anyone, which makes it easy for him to understand your desire for different styles and reasons for playing the guitar. I previously worked with someone who only wanted to teach his style of guitar, so needless to say when I met Tim I was really happy to work with someone who was interested in what I wanted to learn and why. His guitar knowledge is so profound--he's been playing for so long that he can play and teach any style of guitar. When I'd ask about jazz guitar, or rock style vs. blues he not only was able to explain the difference between them all but also could play the styles. Tim's expertise and appreciation for music allows him to be able to teach songs from an array of genres. Not only does he know how to teach them, but he also tabs everything out along with a recording of whatever song you're working on. This was very beneficial to me as I wanted to practice my solo techniques over music that he/we created. I've never created a song before working with Tim and I have to say it was really cool. Very impressive! He supplies all the needed items at his house (amp, guitars--both electric and acoustic), effects, mic--the whole 9 yards. Here are a list of the topics we have covered over the last few years. I know there are more than I'm going to list, but this is what came to mind: -Chords, chord theory, different grips/voicings, etc. -Scales, soloing, riffs -Finger picking technique -Lots of song examples working through chord progressions, melodies, solos -Tabbed out what we worked on & sent recordings to work on rhythm, etc. Again, do the right thing for both you, your wallet, and your guitar and HIRE TIM!!

At 18 years old I was a self-taught, play-by ear guitarist. I wanted to take my playing to the next level so I enrolled for classes in Jazz guitar and music theory at the Peabody Preparatory School. I was pleased to meet my instructor, Larry Hoffman, who was approachable, authentic, humorous and down-to-earth. In just a few years of study with Larry, my guitar playing, knowledge of theory and songwriting improved greatly. Larry took me back to basics in an inspiring way infusing theory with his rich knowledge of music history from the masters to the blues. Larry opened up my guitar playing with exercises such as chording (and scaling) in 5 positions and improvisational jams where I was encouraged to explore. The skills I picked up from Larry remain present in my playing three decades later and I gig regularly in an acoustic folk-rock duo. Larry Hoffman inspired, encouraged and pushed me to become the best musician I could and I'm ever thankful. Michael Thiess

Renato is my son's guitar teacher and to say that my son has made an amazing progress by working with Renato would be an understatement of all time. Renato's unique teaching method that combines guitar playing techniques with composing and music theory helped my son go from playing a few basic chords to being able to play anything from Jimi Hendrix to jazz, blues and classical compositions. We are extremely happy with Renato and we look forward to continuing to work together with him.

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.

My son has been taking guitar lessons for several years from various teachers but it wasn't until he started with Peter that his guitar playing technique really took off. Peter is an outstanding guitar player and teacher. He and my son have a great rapport and my son leaves every lesson telling me how much he's learned and it motivates him to practice even more. I highly recommend Peter as a teacher to guitar students of any age.

I was with Kim for 4 years, and I can honestly say that she made learning double bass easy, as well as fun. There was never a dull lesson, and she always motivated me to continue to practice and further my skills in the instrument. She worked on my school orchestra music, helping myself to perfect it, and also would teach me other techniques/exercises alongside. Honestly, working with Kim for as long as I did was a great experience, and I've become a better player because of all her hard work. She is truly dedicated, and loves playing/teaching double bass.

" Alex taught me everything I know on the guitar. I started from absolute beginner and he took me to the level where I am now. He is a real musician who understands what he is doing on the guitar and why. "He will teach you the music theory in a fun way since every concept is directly demonstrated on the instrument. " The result? " Now, the different concepts are attached to a sound and a hand movement in my head. He has developed his own method of teaching the guitar and he will help you with positioning your hands correctly, thus developing good habits right from day one. " He will also encourage you to improvise and write your own stuff right from the start. At first, it sounds crazy (how can a beginner improvise or write songs?) but after a while, it makes complete sense. This allows the student to develop a lot of confidence with the instrument, especially if you have spent hours (like me) at home messing around in a given key, developing your own touch, your own licks on the instrument. "If you are serious about learning the guitar, Alex is the one!" Gary

I studied bass with Rob for over four years. I sought him out as an electric player, but was inspired by him to take up the upright bass as well. His instruction and encouragement allowed me to take on some musical challenges like doubling on electric and upright in a jazz group and playing in a string orchestra along side more accomplished players. I still use his exercises in my normal practice routine. Thanks Rob!

About

I have turned lessons with some kids into 6-8 year long mentoring relationships. Some have moved onto musics schools and Universities. I work with people from ages 7-61 currently. I have a 100% success rate with my students, but only when time and practice is regimented by the student . Studying and playing music for 30 years has taught me a lot. I base my lesson plans entirely ontbe individual I am working with . No 2 students of mine ever share the same lesson plan , unless requested by those individuals. Most of what I teach I learned by what “not to do” I have found that learning from past mistakes, in all fields of music, had made me very aware of what people should not do as well as areas of focus and strength.
