Patrick installed kitchen backsplash and stone on the wall surrounding my fireplace. He was punctual, did a great job and was flexible with scheduling. He finished the job on time and even provided some music and entertainment while he worked. Highly recommended.

The job was extensive and included the front and backyard as well as a larger pond. Pluses: the company owner made good suggestions on plants which was helpful, the clean up was great, the crew worked very hard and were courteous, friendly and helpful, overall the landscape looked good, albeit short the amount of river stone to finish the beds in their entirety. A few lessons learned: be sure you know what you want and where you want it. Plan to be home because as the customer you provide a lot of direction. It would be ideal if a site walk through was done between the company owner, home owner and the foreman ahead of time in the event the homeowner is not available or is not able to be constantly available to ensure everyone is on the same page. Check to ensure the plants you expected are what you received, that the material quantity needed is calculated in advance and sufficient to complete the job, and that it is very clear that what you expected to be done is in the contract to avoid any confusion or assumptions.

John is a very nice guy and his work is impeccable. At times I felt bad because I thought I was being too demanding about the specifications of the job but John met every demand of me and my wife. I hired John to put up a textured stone tile back splash for me. Originally I bought a tile off Amazon. John put up about half of the tile which took him a decent bit of time because he had to cut the tile and ensure that it looked good. After looking at it, I was not satisfied with the look. It was not because of his work but because of the quality of tile, which was poor. John explained to me that the tile was not good. He could have took advantage of me, finished the job, and went on with his day. Instead he gave me his honest opinion, took down the tile and cleaned off the wall free of charge (even though it was his time that was wasted because of my mistake in buying cheap tile), and he gave me a GREAT recommendation of who to purchase tile from. I went that same day to where he recommended and we quickly rescheduled the job. On the day of the rescheduled job, we had yet another set back. The new source of tile sent me some damaged pieces and I did not have enough tile to complete the job. Again John worked with me and came the next day after I got extra pieces to complete the job. John was extremely understanding and very helpful throughout the entire process. Any home improvement job from hereon out that I have I will absolutely call John first AND I will refer all of my family and friends to him. If you value honesty, professionalism, attention to detail, and expert craftsmanship John is without doubt the person to handle any job you need!

Marvin is a great Professional in the business. The quality in his work is noteworthy. We appreciate his keen eye and honest assessment. Our unfinished porch was completed with stone similar to the original stone on the 80 year old home. We will use Marvin for future projects.

Hired Wilson Construction to build a 200 linear foot cedar picket fence and to extend a driveway with crushed stone. After obtaining several quotes from other fence installers, Wilson offered one of the better quality fences for the lowest price. They also worked with us on a price for the driveway extension, so we are quite happy with the pricing.

Victor and his helper did a good job of re setting a stone walkway around the garage by lifting them up and re setting each stone at the right angle away from the house. Will hire again to add fencing to existing fencing in our back yard.

I have worked with this company twice now, and I am incredibly happy with the jobs that were done. One job entailed creating a new cinder block retaining wall with decorative bricks on top as well as leveling out of my yard. The final results look fantastic and it was all completed within 1 week. The second job entailed repairing/recontruction of a large stone retaining wall with installation of a drainage system to prevent further cracks and damage. There was a tight deadline to get this complicated project completed, and everything was finished on time! Correspondence was prompt, and the final result looks fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the professionalism and hard work by American Home & Hardscape.

This crew replaced my asphalt driveway with a new concrete one, rebuild my stone deck/patio to correct a foundation error made by the original builder, And relayed the brick sidewalk from my front door. They were thorough and professional – obviously very skilled in their work. They did all of the work with care and completeness. Gabriel, the boss, is a master of his craft; he made sure he was there at all of the important points in the projects. His crew were courteous and competent The work started on time, finished on time and looks great. Lots of favorable comments from the neighbors.

The 4 pleasant young men worked as a team to complete shaping shrubbery, remove volunteer young trees as well as dead trees, bamboo from back yard , ivy overgrown in driveway, and a parting gift of pulling ivy from a stone wall along driveway. They were able to complete a monstrous overgrown yard in one day. Thanks so much for cutting back the azaleas so now I feel safe at night with good visibility on the path to my front door.

I was looking for someone to give my garden a makeover. I interviewed several landscaping companies. KC's Lawn & Landscaping came up with a good landscape design They removed all old shrubs and hauled them away, they purchased and planted new bushes with varying height & color. They mulched the garden and built me a stone border surrounding the garden. My garden looks nice they were very nice people to work with. Mizz Berna

Nothing but good things to say about Balco Landscapes! I had just completed two projects with separate big name contractors and the experiences were both horrible. Had I not been on home on several occasions, the work these other contractors did would have been done wrong and not to spec. So I was a bit uneasy when I realized that due to my work schedule, I would not be home for the entirety of the landscaping project with Balco. But, Balco Landscapes showed up every day, on time, and did the work they quoted. The work itself is stunning! The installed 2 flagstone patios over concrete base, a separate stacked stone retaining wall, and landscaped a garden bed horribly overgrown with weeds and planted agreed upon plants. Also planted a dogwood in the very back of the yard. Balco also pulled the necessary permits from Baltimore City (which in itself is no easy task). They quoted 2 weeks to complete the project and they finished in 1 week and 3 days. Harry and his team were nothing but courteous and professional from the moment they showed up in person to discuss design and requirements, through to the project's completion. The morning after the day in which it looked as though everything had been completed, I spoke directly with Harry to make sure they were done so I could finalize payment. Indeed they were... but Harry was already on his way to my house to shore up a joint line in one of the patios that "he wasn't happy with." I didn't ask him to do it... i didn't even recognize what he was talking about... but he came out on his own to take care of it. That is owning your workmanship. And that is respect for the homeowner. This is how working with contractors should always be!! They are already my decided choice for some additional work I'll have done in a few months. If you have landscaping needs, you'll be in good hands with Balco! A+ across the board.

I hired Adkins Landscapes for landscape maintenance around my home and lawn maintenance in my backyard. The lawn was in terrible shape and they brought the grass back to a beautiful rich thick green lawn. The team did a thorough spring cleanup and feeding/mulching of all landscaped beds in the back yard and just recently did an excellent job of expanding an older landscape bed in the side yard and planted a lovely new tree in the midst of it. The company is very personable in working with you to meet your needs, very knowledgeable in making recommendations, and has a high standard of quality in their work.

I hired Alex Kirpichenko of AAK Contractor to put in a backsplash over my kitchen sink. It was a small but exacting job because the backsplash was a photograph of an Italian landscape projected onto ceramic tile. From the very beginning I was most impressed with Alex's knowledge, authority, and efficiency. I had at first planned just to install the backsplash itself, but after discussing it with Alex decided it would look best surrounded by more tile, extending the full length of the walls under the cabinets. I had thought beige tile would be best, but Alex guided me to a pale blue gray stone, which brought out the beauty of the photograph in a way that beige wouldn't have. He also suggested that the backsplash be surrounded with strips of polished stone of the same color, giving the effect of a window. I really do feel as if I were gazing through a window on a peaceful Tuscan scene! The finished product has surpassed my expectations, and has warmed up my white and stainless-steel kitchen. And because of the window effect, the kitchen seems larger. The job took just a few days from start to finish and the price was reasonable, considering the high quality of the work. I would certainly use AAK Contractor again and would have no hesitation in recommending the company to others.

I had asked that the mud-pit that was my front garden be re-sodded. The result is beautiful, and the price for the work was very reasonable. Mr. Brown came on time, completed the work on time, and left me with a beautiful front lawn that several people already have remarked on. Great job, great value!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
