My experience with Name Your Price Moving was a positive one. I had five companies provide estimates. Ali gave me the best quote out of any of the competitors and delivered on every promise made. The movers arrived promptly and even gave me a courtesy call when they were a few minutes away. The staff was nice and took care of all of my belongings. It took a little longer than I initially thought (4.5 hours instead of 4 hrs) but it was definitely worth it, due to the fact all my furniture was padded and wrapped and nothing was broken or destroyed. Thank you for taking the stress out of my moving day.

I have never had such a speedy and enjoyable moving experience. My moving date was changed in the last minute and Baku Moving is the only company that was able to accommodate me. On moving day, the movers showed up on time and finished packing and loading in a short time. They arrived at our new apartment earlier than it was scheduled. The guys were extremely alert. Nothing was lost, nicked or dented at all. They were fairly priced as well. I am so glad to have found these guys!

I’m giving them 5 stars for following reasons: (1) they were pretty consistent with communication (2) they really wanted 5 star review so they gave me money back for the damage and the time their movers disappeared (3) they did show up on time. If I have to honestly rate the work itself, I would rate it 3.5 for the following reasons (1) the movers took 45 minutes to arrive at the destination, even though it was only 7 miles away and there was no traffic or accident. (2) Minor damage to the bookshelf which they gave me a refund as well but the refund check took about 3 weeks to arrive. (3) The movers were getting tired, or trying to milk the time, so unloading was slow - I ended up telling them to put everything in the first floor and I moved all the upstairs boxes myself. (4) The initial estimate did not include the distant fee, even though I provided my address in the post. So when they gave me the quote and I followed up, it was a surprise for me and made me wonder if there was going to be additional charges that I wasn’t aware. There was no more additional fee, but I wish they would have addressed it from the beginning. (5) the movers did not have change, so I had to overpay, which they refunded me with the damage refund. They charge fee for credit card so I didn’t want to charge it on my card - if they are expecting cash transaction, they should be carrying cash for change. Overall I am satisfied - the job was done on time and the movers were courteous. I just wish they didn’t do shady things to milk the time, because the people who are in charge of this company seemed really eager and trying to keep customers happy. They did refund for the time the movers disappeared, and the damage on the bookshelf and the amount I overpaid. In that sense, they are pretty honest. And for that I would give 5 stars.

The move itself was good - efficient and courteous movers. The price was good, as well. Despite my requesting morning for the move, repeatedly from the beginning, the time was set for noon - two. I didn't receive this information until 4:46 p.m., the day before, after I left 2 messages asking for a window of time. It made me have to scramble, last minute, to rearrange my obligations that were scheduled for the afternoon.

I had a last minute move due to family issues. After submitting a request in Thumbtack I came across the A-1 Moving Company's quote and they are where a good price so I contacted them and set up the move. The move was done with out any delays or slow lagging to run up my bill. Also nothing was damaged and it was actually completed earlier than expected considering the last time I moved I had a 3 bedroom home and now we where moving a 5 + bedroom home. I highly recommend these movers.

I highly recommend Charlie's Moving and Hauling. His crew was very professional, courteous and competent. I called Charlie after I was left high and dry by Nova Movers. Nova showed up and the guys decided to leave after I questioned them about several things and the guys they sent really did not have the ability to move a lot of my items. Charlie's crew showed up an hour later and finished the job super fast. I would definitely use them again.

The only time I'm ever motivated enough to write a review is when I get to experience truly outstanding service, which is a reason why my reviews are all 5/5. I moved from Philadelphia to New Mexico without any issues. Many companies just miss the fact that outstanding service does NOT mean scoring 100% in one area only to let customers down in other areas, however slight. From my perspective, TRULY outstanding service is when a company successfully lives up to its brand and reputation throughout the ENTIRE customer experience - from initial contact and negotiation to final thank you's and goodbye's. I highly recommend Great Nation Movers if you are moving across the country.

Fred was very communicative prior to the move, answered all my questions, and even agreed at the last minute to add another person and a bigger truck. His movers worked hard and tried to take care while moving our stuff, even making sure to ask us which items we valued most, so as to be extra careful with them. They were 45 minutes late, but we weren't charged for that time- and Fred even gave us a 30 min discount because of that. Moving is stressful and tough, but with SkyRide we had one less thing to worry about.

I needed some heavy furniture moved from home to a storage unit. PMS told me they could arrive between 8-9am. They pulled in promptly at 7:59am, so were at my door at 8AM. They treated every piece of furniture with the utmost care, wrapping everything. They did not scratch the walls. The job was done in good time, movers were respectful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
