Introduction: Downtown Tumbao plays HOT Latin Jazz from the borderlands of Cha, Bolero, Samba, Salsa and Son. We are an eclectic ensemble that weaves together perennial and contemporary styles. Our Afro-Cuban inspired rhythms drive our music and our enveloping, supple vocals. We can scale up to a full band for large parties and events or trim down to our core voice, guitar and rhythm section for more intimate settings. We've performed in venues large and small and can tailor our repertoire to meet your event's needs. With over thirty years of performance experience across two continents, we are a versatile and seasoned ensemble. And most importantly, we love what we do. A superb musical duo, with virtuosic world-music guitar vamping beneath rich, ethereal jazz vocalizations. Absolutely top-notch talent.

I could listen to Sarah and Chucco (Downtown Tumbao) all night - they are totally in tune with the audience, not at all flashy, completely comfortable with their musi and with each other, and an absolute joy to listen to.

Downtown Tumbao will totally MAKE your event, whether it's a party at home or at a professional venue. Superb musicianship plus delicious interaction with the public make for a double whammy of joy. Everyone I know adores them. They gave us way more than our money's worth and we hope to have them here again soon. --Cristina

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Please describe your event (it's duration, how many guests you anticipate) and the venue (please let us know if it is indoor our outside, will you need sound/pa equipment) and we will provide you with a proposal for our services within 24 hours. Describe the load in: please include a description of how we will get our gear onto the stage. Let us know about parking, too. This will help us determine the time needed for our set up.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Chuco Mendoza's almost 40 years of performance experience includes venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Teatro Alves in Bahía, Brazil, Mexico City's Bellas Artes Palace, its National Auditorium as well as the Metropolitan Theater, to name a few. He has toured across Europe, the U.S. and Latin America with artists like Latin Grammy winner Lila Downs, Tania Libertad, Ricky Martin, Salvador "El Negro" Ojeda, y Oscar Chavez, among many others. He participates in several ensembles in the Baltimore/Washington region. Chuco’s sound is the cement that binds the rhythm and the harmony and gives Downtown Tumbao its identity. Sarah Taylor Cook, classically trained and nurtured in the bosom of Jazz in New Orleans, is a crossover performer who launched her professional career in Mexico City. The gritty lounge scene in El DF, informs her estilo picaresco: an unforgettable chemistry with her bandmates that infects her audience. Sarah’s recent projects include collaborations with Valeria Rojas on her forthcoming album Río Revuelto, Trío La Reunión: with Valeria, and Flora Pasquet, performances with Joao Enrique and Dorio Ferreira, and Jorge García Montemayor, pillars of the Mexico City Jazz and Blues scenes, and of course her performances with the Mexico City version of Downtown Tumbao with Chuco, Baldomero Jiménez and Mauricio Blass.
