we are new to the area and had the group at EBRR Cleanup do an evaluation on some mold under the bathroom sink. Before we followed through on the listing offer we wanted to make sure there was not a larger issue present. Ed was great and all the work happened within a week of our post, personable and friendly.

I needed to have fixtures replaced in my tub/shower and bathroom sink. I hired Nick because of his estimate and the positive reviews I read on this site. I concur with all the 5 stars ratings this gentleman has received and would recommend him to all my friends and family who need plumbing work done! He is very competent, did an excellent job and went beyond what we discussed and cleaned out the drain that had been giving me problems, without changing the price!!! He's a gem!!!

Rob was prompt and professional. Work was meticulous. He hung several art pieces and a large clock. He was careful not to mark Wales with the ladder and cleaned up after himself. He also changed a faucet in the kitchen sink. No complaints. Would highly recommend and refer to friends and neighbors.

We had a leak in the kitchen sink. It was repaired and quickly professionally. Our garage disposal was working but was old and rusting out, James removed it (at me request) and replaced the drain and plumbing. Everything is working, leak free.

Gustavo and his team were there at exactly the time he specified to fix my toilet and work on my sink. Professionalism at its finest. I’m very appreciative. Best thing was he was there the very next day first thing in the morning right before going to work. You can’t beat that especially with the traffic around here. All Season Pros is my go to every time. Thank you so much!!

I was extremely pleased with the work that Sahiab did installing a light box in the wall and installing a bathroom light fixture over my sink. I had originally contacted him three weeks ago. I finally got tired of not having a light in my bathroom so I gave him a call around 11am. I anticipated getting a date mid week or next weekend because it was so nice outside. When I called, Sahiab answered my call and he was very professional. He arranged my job for later that day after he completed the job he was currently on. He texted me prior to his arrival and he had all the tools required. He briefly explained what he was going to do. He completed the job in under 30 minutes and I could be happier. I was very pleased and will look to use him again in the future.

Josh did a great job on the rough-in and finish work for my new half bathroom. He showed up on time and responded promptly with any questions I had. His prices were better than anyone else that reached out to me and he went above and beyond in the quality of his work. I plan on hiring Josh for any of my future plumbing needs, thanks!

Great experience - Joe has become my #1 go to plumber for all future plumbing needs as well. Countertop was installed on a Friday, meaning sink plumbing couldn't be installed til Saturday. Joe did not charge extra weekend duty price - showed up exactly on time, did professional quality work on reinstalling sink, garbage disposal, dishwasher and refrigerator ice maker.

Mr. Juan Lara came out and fixed my plumbing issue same day we placed a request. We had leaking under the kitchen sink that would not stop and had damaged everything under the cabinet. Not only did he fix my kitchen sink but also my bathroom sink. I was so pleased by his work that I also hired him to fix an issue at my business as well. Thank you Juan for the superb job.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

What I liked most about David was his trustworthiness. He came to fix a leak under our sink. It wasn't active when he got there and so he had to run a lot of diagnostics. He went ahead and replaced the faucet and couple other parts and left for the day, saying that if I found the leak again to call him and he'd come back. Sure enough the next morning we woke up to more water and I let him know. He said he would come back out right away, whenever was most convenient for us. Sure enough he came on a weekend with his daughter in tow and no only fixed the job but also took care of another issue that had started in another part of the house free of charge. When he left the second time, sure enough the next morning the sink was leaking yet again so I texted him once again. He walked me through what it could be and said he'd come back out. It turned out that one of the rings was just a bit loose so there was no reason for him to come back out. Couple days later, all seems dry. David may not get it completely right at first as plumbing can be difficult, but he is one of the most trustworthy handymen I have ever encountered and he seems very knowledgable about many different skills. I'd hire him again!

Shaun did a fantastic job installing our kitchen faucet. He showed up on time and got right to work installing our motion sensor faucet in the kitchen. He even took the time to explain to us how it works and how to fix it if we had any problems. Fantastic experience! We'll definitely use him again!

Patrick successfully installed our new bathtub, new cut-off valves, and a replacement sink faucet, and he attempted to fix our drippy shower (but it would not cooperate--probably have to replace the whole thing). He was a good communicator and had a calm, professional manner, despite some hiccups in our old plumbing. He persevered through several necessary trips to the hardware store and an emergency call-back to his main day job, but he was willing to work late hours and on a Sunday to finish it up. And the price was very competitive.

Cristian and Luis were responsive, reliable and hard-working. I had to have a bathroom remodel finished very quickly and they were able to start immediately and completed quickly. Also, the estimate was very reasonable. I had asked for some extra work and they were accommodating and when the total bill came, they were spot on with the actual cost compared to the estimate and the extra work added to the bill was very fair. It’s difficult to find a good dependable handyman that you feel comfortable working with, and I found this in C&L. I already have other projects with which, I will be asking for their services. The work they did for me was drywall and tiling of floor and walls of a full bathroom and extensive drywall repairs in other areas of the home.

Ivan gave us a free quote for a bathroom repair including subfloor rebuild, drywall work, paint, and tile work. It was in line with what insurance estimated so we went with his services. He was punctual and communicative the entire time. The job took a bit longer than expected but it was at no expense or worry to me as Ivan operated pretty seamlessly to finish the job. He left the site clean every day. Do recommend him for general contracting needs.

Arnold stepped in when my original contractor fell ill right after he demo'd the kitchen. Arnold did a fantastic job with a complete kitchen rehab and installing a new bathroom. It was a big project, which included installing heated floors, new hardwood floors, a new staircase, detailed cabinet assembly, recessed lighting, painting, cabinet lighting, installing new electric and much more. I cannot believe how lucky I was to hook up with Arnold. I 200% recommend him. He was extremely reliable, and he always answered my calls, texts and emails. He is a good person, and I now consider him a friend. Thank you Arnold and your team for a job well done. I love my kitchen and bathroom.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
