    Maryland Bass Lessons

    (15 reviews)

It's a fact that the majority of the "bass teachers" you'll see are really guitarists who are trying to earn a little extra money by offering bass lessons. When you do happen to find a real bassist who is offering lessons, too often you'll find that this person is not actively involved in their local music scene. They rarely, if ever perform live shows, and they have no experience in a recording studio. I perform an average of 180 live shows per year and have played on countless studio sessions for big names like HBO and ESPN in addition to numerous CDs with some of the most most respected names in contemporary music. If you want to learn bass guitar, who better to study with than someone who is involved with every crucial aspect of music-making on a daily basis? The satisfaction of seeing a student reach their goals is a continuing highlight of my career which never gets old. It doesn't matter whether the student has modest goals like being able to play along with their favorite songs or whether they have professional goals in their sights. Whenever I get to see one of my students performing live, I feel like a proud parent! It's also pretty cool when I get an email from a former student and they tell me about something great that they're doing with their musical career. I may not ever have a wing at a hospital named after me, but things like this make me feel just as proud.

  • Voix Vocal Studio

    (22 reviews)

Voix Vocal Studio is the private home vocal instruction studio of soprano, Alyssa Cox. Alyssa is an accomplished vocal instructor, coach, and soloist, living and working in Annapolis, MD. She has been teaching voice since 2005 and has a Bachelor and Master's of Music from the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music and postgraduate study at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Alyssa's success as a teacher stems from her study under Lorraine Manz at Oberlin, sopranos Costanza Cuccaro and Carol Vaness at Indiana University, private study with pedagogue Joan Patenaude-Yarnell, and having coached with legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. Alyssa has been a performer in master classes with Marilyn Horne, soprano Deborah Voigt, mezzo soprano Stephanie Blythe, and has performed in recital with Martin Katz and made her Carnegie Hall debut with pianist Mikhail Hallak. With a focus on slavic art song, Alyssa is a Title VIII grant recipient to study the Czech language and culture, and appeared in recital at the Polish Embassy in Chicago as the Polish Studies Artist in Residence for Indiana University. As a Stern Fellow for SongFest, she worked and performed with composers Jake Heggie and John Musto, performing their music in recital. She has also appeared in concert throughout the Tuscany and Le Marche regions of Italy, was a fourth place winner in the International Competition of Song in Trujillo, Peru, and was selected to compete in the Veronica Dunne International Vocal Competition at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland. I am passionate about sharing my love of music with others and helping to bring out and fulfill that passion. Nothing is more freeing or more empowering than using your voice to it's full potential to create beauty and a powerful sound that is uniquely your own.

  • Guitar Lessons, Music Theory, Composing

    (16 reviews)

In addition to over ten years of professional playing in Cape Cod, San Francisco, and Baltimore,I am a Grammy nominee, and have received awards for composing, record production and music journalism. I hold a bachelors and masters degree in music theory and composition from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where I served as faculty and administrator in their Preparatory Division in the fields of music theory, guitar, jazz ensemble, and music history. I also am proud to have had six years jazz study with Dennis Sandole, the teacher of John Coltrane. You can hear some of my music and read more about me on my website. As a teacher, I very much enjoy helping my students understand their musical goals and ambitions; and, with those in sight, seeing each of them progress as musician and artist--each along his or her own personal path. I pride myself in knowing that each of my students plays differently than the others as they all pursue their musical uniqueness. I am very proud in having played a role in each of their lives. Let it not go unsaid that each of them--to the extent that they will allow :) ... is thoroughly trained by me in aspects of chords, scales, technique, style, and genre history -- as well as all aspects of traditional music theory. Many have gone on to advanced standing in highly respected musical institutions, a transition I with which I was happy to help.

  • Guitar Lessons with Tempee Warmack

    (15 reviews)

There are many great players out there but a great teacher is someone who can organize and explain complex concepts in small understandable tasks. The goal is to teach problem solving and instill a sense of wonder along with the music. I want to pass my excitement in learning to the student. I like the fact that I am passing on the music of so many great musicians to the next generation. This is not a task that I take lightly. Music is a living, breathing link to our collective past and our culture. My job is to keep that connection alive and help it to grow.
