My roof was very old and faded, so I contacted a couple of companies to get quotes. EBRR quoted less than the other company, and I was impressed by their representative (Ed) who gave us the estimate. We did not wait much at all, the work was done in just one day. I watched when they finished and they really looked all over for garbage and pieces of roof that had fallen. It was spotless when they had left. The roof looks great and Ed came back shortly after to check it out and see if I had any questions. The front office was always polite when I called, so I recommend you give them a try.

Baker Brothers did a fantastic job on our siding. A storm came through recently and pulled our siding off of the roof in three places. Shaun and Ernie from Baker Brothers were a pleasure to work with. They fixed the siding and it looks amazing. We're very happy with the courtesy and professionalism that Baker Brothers provided.

I hired Thomas because our gutter and soffit were coming loose. He immediately gave us a quote and a time he could come the following day. Thomas arrived on time, assessed the job, and told us how long it would take to complete the job. While he worked, it became apparent that the task was more complicated than we initially thought... there was some rotting wood underneath! But Thomas solved the problem, re-affixed our gutter and soffit, and even though the job took twice as long, he then secured all of our gutters, caulked our roof in a few spots, and gave an assessment on how much life our roof has left. I expected the price to be higher since the work took longer and was more difficult, but Thomas stuck by his initial quote. I highly recommend working with Thomas, and I will definitely think of him for any future jobs.

This company did several projects for me. The projects ranged from fixing/patching my roof to cleaning out my garage. I would give them an excellent review, very accomodating in everyway. Pricing is very fair. Five stars for sure :)

I found and contact Booth through Thumbtack, on a Saturday. The very next day, they came by to do a price quote (yes, on a Sunday!). They came by at 7am sharp and got right to do it, surveying and checking out the roof and siding. After a while, they rang the doorbell and asked if I had any leaks in the house. I walked Mr. Booth to my closet that occasionally rained, and he immediately went outside, grabbed his ladder and climbed on the roof to check out the damage. Quite honestly, this was my third roofing estimate and he was the first one to do this. After he finished walking the roof and checking out the situation, he came into the house to explain everything. I had just purchased the home, so I was pretty familiar but he mirrored the inspection report without even seeing it! The best part - this was a Sunday and said he could do the roof on Monday or Tuesday. I contact Mr. Booth on Monday to verify the start the next day but unfortunately, there was an issue with another project which pushed mine back a day. But all the same the roof was started and completed same day, between 8a and 5p. At the end of the project I was texted pictures of the progression of the work. QUICK SUMMARY - Fantastic, I recommend.

Al and his team were extremely professional. He was able to provide extremely good and comparable pricing, as well as a reasonable timeline to finish the job. He was always reachable and great with recommendations on preventative measures on roof repairs. I would definitely recommend him to friends and family, and would hire him again if the need required.

I'm very pleased with my experience working with Melissa and MJ Home. My completed job looks great and is of good quality. Melissa is friendly, responsive and works with knowledgeable professionals. Two of which are John and Dave. They gave me excellent advice on the future direction of my home improvements and fixed my leaky roof and repaired the damaged dry wall under. MJ is a very good choice for your roofing and drywall repair.

A tree outside our house was struck by lightening and threw branches on our house. It wasn't until three months later during a series of torrential rainstorms that we discovered it punctured our roof (all the contractors missed it!) and was leaking. Wilder came out and inspected the damage within hours of me contacting him. He gave a fair quote and returned as soon as it was safe to complete the repairs. He was timely in his work and even did a little more shingle repair than we originally agreed upon (he discovered more in need of replacement when he was up there). He took pictures of each step of his work to show that he did the work he promised, and followed up with me at the close of business to confirm the work was okay. Wilder made a very stressful event pleasant to fix. We plan to contact him for future repairs and recommend him to our friends.

These guys were fast fast fast! I needed someone to tarp my roof after the wind storm and needed if done within 24 hours before rain came into the area. They were able to cover my roof the same day, despite their heavy workload, and for a very fair price. Communication was top notch and Jeff the owner was great at helping us know what to expect as we go through the insurance claim process. Highly recommend.

Spend three weeks getting estimates on my roof had a total of 5 estimates and B & A Construction beat all of them. The contract was signed Thursday 2/8/18 and the roof was installed and completed Saturday 2/10/18. I couldnt be more happy with the new roof, the house looks great! Next time i will be contacting B & A instead of wasting time with other estimates.

Goodman and his Supreme Home Services team were professional, punctual, fairly prices, and most importantly did a good job on roof installation. Now, the final verdict can’t be given until the next good rain, but that withstanding, I’d definitely utilize his services again.

Weather delayed my roof replacement project but when the window of opportunity came the Crew came and replaced my roof in 1 day. They even replaced some damage sub roof without any extra charge. I plan on using them again for other home improvement projects.

Bottom line: Our roof looks great. It took a bit of work to get there... but thankfully the crew was willing to put in the time and effort to make it right. We don't like having to be roof inspectors when we hire a professional roof installer, but it is what it is. Workers were respectful and kind. However, they were a bit messy.... we picked up a bunch of nails, shingle pieces, plastic wrappers, etc.... BHS was not the cheapest or the most expensive. He was right down the middle. Mr. Cox was responsive to all our concerns and replied or called in a timely manner. Will post pictures soon.

I manage a rental property that is not very close to home. I was very impressed with the way Bryon handled himself and gave me an honest assessment and fair estimate on the work needed. I had been told by other roofers that we needed an entire new roof. Bryon explained that the roof looked ok, but there was one area that needed to be repaired. He sent pictures of what he thought should be done and I was able to get his estimate over the phone. The work we agreed upon was done well and fast. I will definitely be calling him for any other work needed.

James and Claddagh Roofing did a great job fixing my roof after my ceiling started leaking following multiple days of rain. He was quick to respond to texts and I was able to schedule a time that worked for my schedule (and when the rain briefly stopped). I asked him to take a look around the roof and he identified and repaired several potentially leaky areas and even identified a damaged area of roofing that wasn't a pressing issue but probably needs to be addressed in the future. The whole time, James was able to explain what he was doing and what had gone wrong with each section of the roof he was repairing, which was quite the education for me. I would highly recommend Claddagh for any roof issues you might encounter. I know they will be my first call in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
