I highly recommend Spanish by Lorna - she is amazing! My son was having extreme difficulties with his Spanish class in school. I had minimal success finding a tutor who could get through to him because he was really not excited about learning a new language. But, in just a few short sessions, Lorna had him completely engaged in the learning process and his results were amazing. Not only did his Spanish grade improve from a C to an A, but he also began looking forward to his lessons and getting ahead on his homework assignments. I cannot thank Lorna enough for her ongoing help with my son, and I totally recommend Spanish by Lorna for your Spanish tutoring needs. Trust me - you will be very glad with your choice!

Patricia is a wonderful Spanish tutor. I have been working with Patricia for about a month and feel like I have learned more than I did in 4 years of Spanish in school. Patricia will challenge you but in a very kind, encouraging way. I look forward to my weekly lessons! Highly recommend!

Professor Hanrahan is exceptional. He's been my instructor for both Spanish and Portuguese. His methods are innovative (art, poetry, music, and other forms of creative exploration) and very responsive to the needs of the student. I'm always surprised that just when I hit the wall and think "I'll never learn this," Professor Hanrahan finds a way to get me past the sticking point. I highly recommend his services.

Learning Spanish from Hilda is fun and achieves rapid progress. She tailors the classes to meet the student's goals and interests, so you can find yourself singing songs, reading anything from children's stories to newspaper articles, depending on your level of comprehension, and discussing movies, politics, or the antics of your dog, all in Spanish. She is always professional and friendly, can answer all your grammar questions, and arrives prepared. It is an uplifting experience to spend time with such a positive, thinking, dedicated teacher. She's the best there is!

It is my belief that a translator is above all a cultural broker. To this end I not only diligently research materials relevant to the translation at hand, but I also posses the linguistic acumen to select form various possible words for the one that best applies to the context I am translating. This leads to consistent and concise renditions that close the linguist gaps that can lead to contextual and/or cultural misunderstandings

Unlike many other tutoring services, Capital Tutoring understands that real progress is only made once the student and tutor have a personal connection. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
