Chef and his team were excellent. Our event was not a typical event and he coped with it superbly. I do the same event every year and the amount of rave reviews from my guests about the food and the service was unprecedented. I will not hesitate to book chef in again or to recommend him and his team.

Our event was a wedding eve bbq hosting family and out-of-town guests. As the bride, I didn't want to be bothered with cooking, setting out food, serving drinks or cleaning up at the end of the evening. Key Ingredients allowed me the opportunity to socialize with guests who came across the country to celebrate our special day. The food was excellent with a good combination of appetizers and bbq fare of pulled pork and chicken. There were plenty of main course leftovers for us to enjoy. The service staff, Ramon and Jose, were unobtrusive as they filled empty wine glasses, took dirty plates, and ensured guests were taken care of. If you plan on using the bartending services, please make sure you have a 6 foot long table for drinks. There was a miscommunication between us and Key Ingredients, and I needed to call a couple of neighbors to hunt down a table an hour before guests arrived. Luckily it worked out and all was good. It was a lovely evening and I would recommend using Key Ingredients.

On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family.

This caterer was quick to respond to my request for a quote. Not only did they give me a price within my budget but they also paid attention to my need for a "Hawaiian" menu, so they took the initiative to respond with a personalized menu just for my event. Now for the food, it was delivered and set up on time by a very polite and helpful gentleman. One of my event attendees said "now my son wants to go to Hawaii because he loves the food". What a wonderful complement. Would 100% use this catering service again - thank you Brian and Katie for working with me!!!

I loved everything about working with Dianna of Catering reserved! From start to finish she delivered everything she promised, including delicious food! She was prompt, creative, and thorough in her proposal; she worked with me to refine my needs and I was very comfortable with my final decisions; Her pricing was affordable and fair and most importantly she promised there would really be enough food to feed everyone and there was! She promised it would be delivered on time (it was), that her staff would set it all up nicely without my help (he did!) and that it would be hot and delicious (and it was!). Nothing was forgotten; nothing was omitted. The serving utensils were there, the sterno, and the clear containers were perfect for serving the food in. I didn't need china serving dishes for my event, but Dianna does offer that and if my next event needs Catering Reserved's full service, I won't hesitate to use it. (Food plus waitstaff for setup and clean up.) I've never met Dianna in person, and I never tasted her food prior to hiring her for my very important event, but from our first conversation I just knew I could trust her, and I was right. I highly recommended her! Thanks to Catering Reserved, I got to visit with my guests and totally enjoy my "after-the-wedding" party.

I was in contact with Chef Karida for months in preparation for my wedding--a buffet style brunch. She specially tailored a delicious menu. It was always easy to contact her or her assistant. On the day of the event itself, Sweet Bazil provided top-notch service. The wait staff was fantastic, attentive, and personable. Everyone at the wedding is still talking about how utterly delicious the food was and how beautiful the set ups were.

Excellent customer service and great food! I contacted Chef Nikki because I wanted to reduce the amount of fast food my family was eating. She suggested prepared meals and quickly provided a menu of healthy meals for me to select from. The food was delicious, the portion sizes were generous, and everything was professionally packaged. Because of Chef Nikki I can serve home cooked meals that are as convenient as fast food. I will continue to hire her.

We had an amazing experience with Sandra planning our sit-down dinner party at our home. Sandra worked with me to finalize a menu that would work for 8 unique preferences, allergies and tastes. She provided amazing service and value at every step of the way. From the menu to the table setting and decorations, the experience was better than what a restaurant could have provided, all in the comfort of our own home. Every dish prepared was more delicious than the last, and we are still talking about the desserts. I truly cannot recommend Sandra enough, and hope we have reason to hire her again in the very near future. Even our visiting family members were asking if she would be willing to travel!

Where do I begin. I was planning for a house warming event (BBQ style) for a group of 40 people so I submitted a request for catering on Thumbtack. I was a little worried that my limited budget would be a problem to work with any caterer but still submitted my request. I immediately heard back from Suzanne and a couple of other caterers. The other caterers I heard back from were not willing to adjust the menu to fit my budget. Suzanne was so accommodating and willing to customize my menu to stay and work within my budget. She communicated with me until the day of the event asking me about details and any requests I had. She even incorporated spices from my native country. She took the time and effort to learn about a special dish from Ethiopia and made it with perfection. My guests were raving about her food the entire night saying how delicious and flavorful it was. I would hire Suzanne for other events and would recommend her service to everyone I know. It was such a pleasure to work with Suzanne!

I hired Dani to cater a large work lunch at the non profit think tank where I work. She did an AMAZING job. She was extremely responsive, easy to schedule with (even when I sent her the wrong date), showed up early, and stayed throughout the lunch to make sure everything ran smoothly. Her food was delicious and easily catered to a range of dietary restrictions. About 90-100 people showed up (I had asked for catering for 70) and there were even leftovers. I can't recommend her enough! She has since come back for multiple events. Everyone at work has raved about her cooking.

My husband and I were extremely pleased with Regions Catering and would absolutely work with them again! Not only did they provide high quality service and delicious food, but they took our vision for the day and applied it to every detail. They brought it to life in a way I never even imagined!! Kwesi and his team were so accommodating and so pleasant! It was a breath of fresh air working with them. We never had to worry about a thing and they even cared enough to bring a gift for our little bundle of joy. It truly was a remarkable experience and I can't wait to host another event and hire them again!!

The impeccable service staff and food at Pema’s Restaurant is what makes all of the events that I host very successful. Their professionalism is unmatchable and their food is great for my events because everyone enjoys a comforting, home cooked meal. I highly recommend using their catering/event services in the DMV area.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
