"Ms. Suzanne is an excellent massage therapist. Before I met her, my whole body was aching. When she gave me a one hour massage, I began to feel better. Now my stress levels have tremendously reduced. She is kind, polite, and professional. I will book another appointment with her and recommend her to others. Thank you Suzanne. Gambo Ibrahim"

"After working with Leon for about a year, I am incredibly pleased with the progress I have made. My focus is mainly strength training and he does an excellent job of personalizing our sessions to ensure I see the results I want. He challenges me with our workouts and frequently incorporates new moves and equipment for a more well rounded workout. In addition to training, we also discuss nutrition and he gives me tips to help me stay on track with my diet. He is punctual and courteous, very rarely needing to reschedule - giving plenty of advanced notice in those rare occasions that he does need to reschedule. He is also flexible with my schedule and is able to accommodate the day/time that works best for me which I appreciate! Overall, he is a joy to work with! He is personable and friendly making me feel right as ease. I am happy with the results and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone!"

"The things that impressed me the most about Mr. Nixon were his professional manner and his respect for my privacy. He made sure I was comfortable and covered except for the area he was working on at the time. He worked with me on what I needed and asked for feedback, creating a very custom treatment. I have a back injury, so trust was a big factor. Because of the conversation before hand about what I needed and what to expect, I was relaxed within minutes and could take full benefit of the massage. I look forward to working together on this healing journey. Thank you Reggie."

"Marcus is extremely skilled at what he does—after hearing what my problem areas were he pinpointed them right away and used different methods to massage and relax them. His technique is great; he is very in tune with what he does and the results show it. I felt so amazing after my first session with him and cannot wait for the next one!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
