Bullfrog came out, talked with us about the job of replacing damaged brick on our porch sides and then resurfacing the top of the deck and walkway with brick, reviewed the project and made suggestions, and then left us with a specific and reasonable quote for what was to be done. Upon signing the contract, they began work on the agreed day and sent out several experts as needed. The job required leveling the marred surface and removing old brick before laying the new brick on the surface and facing wall. Bullfrog worked methodically and carefully, ensuring that each phase of the project was well done and properly completed before beginning the next. When the job was completed we were pleased with the end results and their excellent service, oversight and cleanup. I would recommend them to anyone needing masonry or stonework.

We had Branyon build a fence for our townhouse. He was very professional, responsive, and had the fence built in one day. The fence looks great and is exactly what we were looking for. Would use Branyon again in a heartbeat.

We can’t say enough good things about Dead Rock Contractor Services – and believe us when we say this recommendation is not some frivolous platitude. In late December 2015, a check valve on our sump pump’s discharge line broke which resulted in a fair amount of water damage to our basement. While exercising the requisite due diligence to find a knowledgeable and qualified contractor, we came across Chris Livingston’s company through the recommendation of a competitor who wasn’t licensed to complete the scope of work. To be sure, Dead Rock was neither the least nor most expensive bid proposal, but we chose this company more than anything else, because of the quality of work, strength of references, and years of experience and technical expertise. Dead Rock possesses the requisite licenses, insurances, etc., consistently showed up for work on time, the employees were always courteous, respectful, and cleaned up at the end of the day. The company ripped out and replaced walls, insulation, interior and exterior doors, replaced electrical fixtures, completely gutted and restored a full bath, painted the whole thing, installed tile flooring throughout – and even built a new closet with remnant material. Concurrent with the basement remodel, a snow storm brought drown our shed. Again with a competitive bid, we chose Dead Rock Contractor Services who removed the now-destroyed shed, graded and installed a new pad, restored electrical power, and oversaw installation of the new shed. We were so pleased with the quality of work, we went with Dead Rock this past summer as we elected to renovate our kitchen and baths which included installing hardwood flooring, granite countertops, electrical and light fixtures, painting throughout, completely renovated the master bath including installing tile flooring, replacing the vanity, etc., and renovating 2 additional bathrooms. It was a bad year for our insurance company as this past fall, a tree fell onto our roof and one of our decks. There was no question in our mind that we would use Chris and his company to complete the repair work which included replacing the roof, repairing an outside deck, a heat pump, and steps. Into all of this, were myriad “neat ideas” not included in the various proposals that the company was able to accomplish. As folks with extensive experience using this contractor, electing Dead Rock Contractor Services was a truly outstanding choice! Again, we simply can’t say enough good things – and can’t make a strong enough favorable recommendation about Chris Livingston and Dead Rock Contractor Services.

We recently decided to update our house that we have been living in for 4 years. We were looking to repair some stuff that had been let go, and also make some major changes inside. We found Chuck Baron's Custom Remodeling on Facebook and decided to call him out for a quote. We knew that we needed some repair done on our deck steps out back, a couple of walls removed, and a master bathroom remodel. Chuck was able to meet with us in a timely manner, and arrived at our house on time. We showed him our back steps, where he explained that we were having problems because the stringers were incorrectly place and recommended that the steps be rebuilt, rather than replacing the few steps to avoid future issues. The next area that he looked at was the two walls we wanted removed in the kitchen to create an open concept between the living room, dining room, and kitchen. He took the time to listen to what we wanted and then explained the process, including that we would need to install a header to make sure our supporting wall was still supported once the portion of the wall was removed. The last thing we asked for a quote for was remodeling our master bathroom. We needed to closets removed, tiling flooring installed, and two cabinet sinks installed. Chuck was professional the entire time and took the time to discuss different options that were available to us and mentioned some ideas that we had not previously thought of. We decided to hire him for all three projects, which he completed well beyond our expectations and within our time frame. We have recently decided to hire him for a build-in cabinet and some additional crown moulding in the near future. We appreciated the time he took to explain the entire process to us, the way he went above and beyond to keep us informed during the process, and promptness at showing up at our house. We definitely recommend Chuck and will hire him for all our future needs.

Beyond my expectations. Not only was my home and deck cleaned to look like new, the additional work to repair the steps and side porch area made it safer and much better looking. The deck sealing was excellent, too. I'll definitely call again for other handyman jobs. And I'm pleased to recommend his work to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
