Having Bill Pow work with my daughter was one of the best choices I've made for her. On there first meeting he was able to zero in on what were the areas they should work on and what strategies she should developed. My daughter, who really didn't want tutoring, especially during summer vacation, was very thankful she was able to work with Bill. She says she feels far better prepared for her ACT retake. Bill was so flexible and responsive when scheduling appointments. He always came prepared and each session was very productive.

After studying French through Arlington County Adult Education for two sessions over the past few months, my understanding of grammar was fairly good but my pronunciation and ability to speak were horrible, so I decided to pursue a tutor. After an initial session where she evaluated my learning goals and needs, Zahra developed a plan to improve my French speaking in time for a trip this coming summer. Zahra introduced me to important pronunciation rules that were not covered by the class I attended, and she immediately began helping me learn some basic and intermediate conversation phrases and topics that I will be able to use on my trip. Her approach is very practical and tailored to my specific needs. I plan to continue learning from Zahra after my trip to improve even more. Zahra is an excellent teacher whom I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn French at any level. She provides great handouts to make learning fun and easy, and she gives just the right amount and right type of homework to reinforce the concepts from the tutoring sessions. Zahra is the best!

You can't ask for a better tutor than the one we got. We ended up doing in-home tutoring and the tutor was very kind and courteous and knowledgeable.

Nema has been wonderful. He has helped refresh many concepts that I have forgotten, and he has taught me new ways of looking at other problems. He has shown the shortcuts to problems and how to quickly view and dissect what the problem is asking. Nema has been a wonderful tutor!

Mr. Mougy Ahmed has done wonders as a math tutor for our sophomore son! He has a very agreeable, non-threatening tutoring style, and our son enjoyed working with him right away. Our son was getting D's and C's in Algebra II , even with the assistance of a previous math tutor. Mougy came to our house and immediately recognized where our son was misunderstanding foundational concepts in Algebra II, and worked with him to build up that knowledge base and apply those skills correctly. He has been highly responsive in setting up tutoring sessions, sending additional lessons/exercises via email, and even holding extra sessions in advance of math tests/quizzes. As a direct result of Mougy's tutoring, our son earned a B+ and an A on his last two math tests. We highly recommend him to any student or parent who is searching for tutoring assistance.

Prior to tutoring, two things were holding my daughter back on the SAT- the math section and her confidence. Alex was the perfect tutor to improve both of those areas. He provided clear teaching in math that honed in on the areas where she needed the most help. He was consistently positive and encouraging, helping her believe in herself. This led to her math score jumping 180 points.

Lubna is the best teacher I’ve ever been taught by. She is very patient and explains concepts very thoroughly. What amazes me the most has to be the fact that she genuinely wants her students to succeed! I highly recommend her to anyone as you will see an improvement in your studies! A bonus has to be that she is fun to be around:)

About

I love working with kids and young adults. I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics with the goal of teaching at a high school and/or grade school level. My journey in life led to becoming a Ballroom dance teacher. While my career has me work with a typical age range of 25-60, I went to school to inspire, motivate, and help grade school through high school age children. It has never been a goal of mine to simply teach a subject, whether it is math or ballroom dancing. I am dedicated to making a positive change in people's lives and showing them that they can get through anything if they are willing to do the work. I enjoy working with people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. While I may teach the same material almost daily, I have to constantly find new angles to reach the person and make them feel progress. There is no one way to learn or teach something, so I constantly pull from my experience and other's experience to further my own understanding. I have seen my students make drastic changes in their lives, because I'm passionate about the results and I believe in what I do! Everyday brings new challenges and I'm willing to adapt and change my outlook and process as needed.

Alexa is a gift. I was fortunate enough to have seen an advertisement in our neighborhood circular. I have a 10-year-old who has difficulty with writing. He is a bright kiddo who had been so discouraged with his writing. The process was so hard for him. We had a great tutor before Alexa but, needed convenience. TO MY SURPRISE SHE WAS AN EVEN BETTER FIT FOR MY SON. He has made so much progress in just 4 months. She really pushes him forward but, in a way that has made him feel more confident vs defeated and exhausted. He has gotten his very first "A" in a writing assignment! this is a huge deal for us. He started using much more descriptive sentences, staying on topic, and began building better summaries. The "A" was just the icing on the cake. Alexa is very communicative. She provides great support outside of tutoring. She requests opportunities to speak with his language teachers. She listens to my concerns and has made specific suggestions - like the 10 min fun writing task we do at home a few times a week as a supplement. My kiddo sometimes does not realize we are doing work at all. We started with Alexa as a way to prevent the summer slump and have decided to continue through the school year because we are both incredibly satisfied with the quality of tutoring she provides.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
