Nova Movers were so helpful with helping me move into my new apartment. They delivered quick and quality service. The price was affordable and they even fixed a few dresser drawers for me. I enjoyed doing business with Nova Movers and I highly reccomend their services for your next move!

My experience with name your price movers was amazing! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because they were late, but in the DMV area on a Saturday afternoon that's kind of expected, but that's the only flaw they had. The movers were courteous and professional, they worked very hard and the entire process only took 3 hours. The jib was fast but the quality of work they did and the care they took with my belongings was still superb, I had no damaged furniture besides what got damaged in my previous move, which was not done by this company. I will definitely be using them again probably in about a year when it's time for me to find another apartment to live in. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for an affordable move and professional workers.

Baku Moving definitely deserves an appreciation for the service they provide. For my move, I hired them purely on the basis of the quote they gave me, which was quite affordable. The moving team was very efficient and they were in and out of my apartment in on time. I was very pleased to see all my things turning up right on the scheduled day. They really are the best movers in the country.

We found Great Nation on Thumbtack, and Rose was our moving consultant and she facilitated a long distance move with a complete package for us. She was extremely communicative, efficient, respectful and affordable. The moving team arrived early, thoroughly wrapped all of our items and furniture and delivered them on time to our new house in a different state. Everyone was incredibly nice throughout the whole process and extremely hard working. We would use him again in a heartbeat and have already recommended Rose, and Great Nation to multiple friends looking to move in the DC area. Seriously could not have made the moving experience more low stress. Thank you so much, Kevin & Family

We could not have been more happy with Adrian during our move last weekend! They were punctual, efficient, and great to talk to. The move was quicker than we thought it would be and hiring them made all the difference. Checkmate was also so much more affordable than some of the bigger moving companies I originally looked into. I can't recommend them enough.

Considering hiring movers? Alpha Wolf Moving is worth every penny. I looked around and they were the most reasonable prices and they were available when I needed them. Darrell and his team were great from start to finish! I would highly recommend them to anyone (and already have to 3 people). Darrell coordinated with me prior to the move, checked in the day before, and showed up on the day of the move prepared. I had a few items I didn't know how to pack, but the guys had blankets/tape and had them packed up and out of there before I even realized it. They also had protective plastic for my furniture items. They were really quick, but careful with my things at the same time. They even moved my furniture into the rooms where it was going to be, and the boxes (for example if it was labeled "bedroom" they offloaded it into the bedroom for me). For a studio-ish size move, they packed up, drove to the new place, and unpacked in 2.5 hours. It actually ended up being less than I expected, so I gave them extra on the tip. Bonus, I only requested 2 guys, but Darnell showed up too. I thought for a moment I made a mistake an asked for 3, but Darnell said he was just along for the ride and not really there. He ended up jumping in at the end, for no extra cost. Moving sucks, it sucks a lot. Moving with Alpha Wolf Moving makes it much more bearable. I literally sat on the couch while they moved everything out of my place. Thanks guys!

I could have not asked for more from a moving company. We moved this weekend from MD to VA, and thanks to four movers from Pick Up Movers, our move was absolutely seamless. I am very impressed and satisfied with their service. The movers were punctual and very professional. They go over the details with you on paper prior to starting to ensure there are no surprise fees. They were exceptionally efficient with the moving process. They unassembled and reassembled my furniture for me with no extra charge, which definitely helped ease my stress. I really recommend this moving company to anyone out there that wants a stress-free moving experience.

I had an excellent experience when it came to both the coordination and execution of my long distance move with M&M Moving and Hauling. They were the first company to provide me with a quote, and were able to complete the job for a very reasonable price. My father, who oversaw the pickup location side of the move, even commented on how efficient they were at loading everything. Even if you are moving into a walk-up with narrow stairwells, no need to fear— Marvin and his assistant dealt with it spectacularly. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again.

Carlos did a wonderful job repairing my deck. He immediately set an appointment with me for an estimate, he gave me different options on what kind of repairs could be done. He was affordable and completed the work within the timeline I had. He was very professional and nice to work with. He even had someone come and fix a plumbing issue I had. Very reliable and affordable. I will definitely work with Carlos again.

I had one very heavy armoire I wanted moved from downstairs to upstairs. My three Bellhops showed up on time and they were very friendly and courteous. My armoire is big, heavy, and awkward and they had to navigate a curve with railings and a low ceiling area as they carried it upstairs. They were as careful as they could be with it. They were great and I will definitely recommend Bellhops Moving to my family and friends! Thank you.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
