Thank you Ed and your team for everything! I had originally requested some household debris removal out of my basement. Ed came out on site a few days ahead of time to take a look at the junk I wanted to remove and gave me a more than fair estimate based on the amount of junk I had to be removed. My basement is 1500 square feet and I had about two dump trucks worth of clutter in my basement. Soon after Ed discussed the pricing I knew that I wanted to use his company based on his professionalism and ethics. The day of the work, Ed had two dump trucks out on site and all the debris removed from my basement in no time at all! I coundn't beleive how effective his crew was in getting the job done. I have already referred my neighbors to his company because of the high quality of work his company does. Thanks again Ed!

Anthony helped me with a small project this morning, transporting several bags and clothes and household goods to the local Goodwill. He was prompt, responsive and great to work with.

I enjoyed having EES service my chimney and fireplace. They're extremely professional, quick, clean and fair. As a new homeowner, I try to take preventative measures and for good reason. Not only did they clean my chimney but saw cracks in my fireplace which is a fire hazard. I've scheduled to have the area repaired and will definitely use EES for future household needs.

He was quick to respond and was able to come and do an estimate the next night. His estimate was fair. He competed 3 jobs for me, cleaned up after his work and was a very nice and honest person. I will definitely be hiring him again for whatever household job we can't do ourselves. He also took PayPal which was very convenient for me. Great with communication and on time.

So my back went out and I couldn’t get my household chores done. I needed to book a house cleaning because I’ve decided not to use the company I usually book. There was only a couple of reviews for American Commercial Cleaning Services so I couldn’t judge whether they’d do a good job. I’m so happy I took a chance because I literally booked her last minute and she fit me in the schedule. The best part for me is that when they left I didn’t feel like I didn’t get my money’s worth. I’m very pleased and will hire again.

Nick responded to my request quickly & was available to do the job faster than I expected. He showed up right on time & communicated he was on his way. Nick assessed our issues, offered solutions, wrote up a quote, & preformed the work on the spot. He was honest, kind, & professional as our household was a mess getting the day started. We will definitely be working with Nick for our future projects!

JJ Contracting has been working on a number of projects in my neighborhood, including the house closest to mine. I felt it was a positive recommendation that they had so many jobs in this community that I hired them for several household projects that had been accumulating in my own home. These include replacing a garden fence post that had rotted out and was no longer stable, repairing a garden gate that was sagging so badly it could not be opened, and repairing a whole in the ceiling that had been cut a year ago to find a water leak. In each case, I was extremely pleased by the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their work ethic. They even take on small tasks along the way without charge. In fact, I am working with them now on designing a custom pedestal for my laundry room for a new washer and dryer which have nothing ready made available. That is testament indeed to the confidence I have in JJ Contracting. Susan Moos

CC&G was hired to remove some junk/household trash from my old house. They replied quickly and were able to complete the job in a short time frame. Upon their arrival I realized that there was more junk than anticipated and they didn't hesitate to take it too. It was great working with them and would hire them again without question.

Henry and his team were awesome! They were nice and did a really great job on our home. We hired them to paint our Foyer and Upstairs Hallway, Family Room, Formal Living Room, and two kids bedroom. Henry and his team went above and beyond what they were asked to do. My wife picked colors for an area and when painted she was visibly upset by the way the natural sunlight significantly changed the color so Henry and his team were so kind to make suggestions and test paint small areas for her so that she would see exactly what the finished product would like and this made all the difference to my wife. They were precise and careful not to damage any household items and they were very thorough and clean in all of their work. I will definitely be hiring Henry and team again with more projects in the future!!!

I put my house on the market and had an open house scheduled for last Sunday. It had rained most days for the past couple weeks, but there was an opening in the weather to get the lawn mowed and edged on Friday. Edging was the biggest issue, as it hadn't been done in months. I contacted a couple of places and they couldn't give me a firm commitment that they would do the job Friday, but then I talked with Rachael at Household Helping Hands. She said they could definitely come out Friday morning and take care of my lawn. True to her word, they arrived early Friday morning with truck and trailer, took a quick look, verified the lot lines and got straight to work. The driver and two man crew were all professional, courteous and efficient. They quickly knocked out the bulk of the yard with a large riding mower, and then finished up with a smaller mower. There was extensive work to do on the edging, and they kept at it for an additional hour. They picked up all debris and left it neatly bagged at the curb. They did such a thorough and professional job, that I paid them a little extra beyond what they had quoted. I plan to have them back every week until my house sells. Highly recommended! Edwin delivered more than he promised at a reasonable price. I needed some metal sheets removed from under the deck they were too high and nailed in. Eventually we decided to do something which was much more time consuming and cumbersome. But Edwin gladly completed the project at the same price we had initially discussed.

Luis Lameles showed a great depth of knowledge across the spectrum of household repair issues and was able to provide good advice on various repair items. He completed three days of work on time and at the agreed upon estimate. He installed a medicine cabinet, a vanity mirror, closet door knobs with necessary repair to the doors (to include adjustments) and a long list of smaller items which included cleaning window frames of left on paint by others, cleaning and adjusting window tracks to glide better, replacing ceiling light fixtures, etc.. I will happily call on Mr. Lameles to do additional work for me.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
