I am being tutored in Spanish from Julissa. My sessions have been educational and fun. Julissa builds the curriculum around the students strengths. Although my tutoring session is 1 hour, she spends her own time at home preparing for my lessons. Julissa is professional and punctual and I am extremely proud to have her as my tutor.

Zahra's teaching style is singular: focused, fun and memorable. The sum of Zahra's lessons was massively comprehensive: phonetics, grammar, extensive vocabulary and basic conversation topics. After each lesson, Zahra provides notes, handouts and homework that help the student review the current lesson and learn the next lesson. Zahra is passionate about teaching and celebrates her students' progress. She understands her students' learning styles and customizes each lesson to help the students reach their end-goals. Zahra strives to make herself available for students to provide flexibility for busy schedules. In short, Zahra is an excellent teacher and without a doubt makes learning a new language fun and engaging.

Ben Schwabb/physics & engineering tutor is a real professional: knowledgable, concise, thorough, and presents a well-planned lesson each time. He helped my high schooler pull up his physics grade dramatically and pre-taught an electrical engineering course to my college-age son to get a jumpstart on his fall class. Alex/director is extremely responsive, provides quality tutors quickly, and stays in contact to ensure client satisfaction. Every company should operate this way.

I hired Patricia to help me improve my spoken Spanish in preparation for an upcoming conference in Argentina. We meet three times per week and converse about a wide range of topics, from technical workplace vocabulary to casual conversation. Patricia has been a tremendous help for me to refurbish my Spanish skills and improve my speaking precision. I hope to continue taking lessons even after the conference is over!

It was nice meeting Mrs. Wendy. She arrived on time and was very friendly. My son enjoyed the class and we plan to continue several lessons more until my son can be at the level he needs to be in.

Dan gives excellent lessons at a very reasonable prices. I started taking lessons with Dan about 6-8 months ago at a beginner level and now am becoming fluent already. (even considering I can only manage to see Dan infrequently, sometimes only once a month! And this is because we live an hour apart, but his lessons are worth the drive) He is patient, encouraging, knowledgeable, gives homework and recommends books to choose from. Dan is worth every penny and I would recommend his tutoring to anyone I know.

I'm in the foreign service and have trained long-term for professional-level fluency in three different languages (including at the Foreign Service Institute twice). Hilda is one of the best and most knowledgeable language teachers I have had (which has been over two-dozen). She's highly professional and was able to gauge my training to my learning-style and abilities very quickly. In addition, her level of knowledge of the language was very highly regarded by other Spanish-language teachers I've had. If you've studied a foreign language at a high level, then you're probably aware that not every native speaker is equal in his/her grammatical knowledge and vocabulary (I once had a teacher in a different language who didn't have vocabulary outside of daily-life usage). Hilda has a very in-depth understanding of grammar as well as specialized vocabulary in diplomacy, politics, business/economy, science/technology, the environment, culture, and the issues of the day. Most of all, she is a joy to be around. My level of speaking and reading is now ABOVE the 3/3 requirement of my employer! I'm thrilled, and I can't recommend Hilda highly enough!

I started working with Theo in February 2015. I found him very engaged and very enthusiastic about the subjects he teaches. He has a very deep understanding of the language arts and always willing to work with you on a curriculum based on the student's needs. I am an adjunct instructor at UW, and I will gladly recommend Theo any day. Don't hesitate to call me for references. Best, Ilanko

Michelle was extremely knowledgeable and had an immediate rapport with my daughter. The short term goal was to improve her grades in reading and language arts. Besides learning the material, my daughter became more open to the idea of using a tutor, and realized the benefit of doing so. You can really tell that Michelle loves kids and has a blast working with them, and that makes all the difference!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
