James did excellent work replacing a gas hose and turning it into gorgeous black pipes under our water heater. He also helped diagnose what we thought was a clogged drain - it was just the sewage catch thingie. Thank you James!

I felt every effort was made to repair my tankless water system. When repair was not possible he helped me see alternatives. The work was done in a professional and timely manner. We decided to have additional work done due to our satisfaction with the initial call. We will use them again if future needs arise.

This is my first time using Thumbtack and honestly, I am really satisfied with water heater installation from Walter. Our Water heater was leaking (19 years old) and needed immediate replacement since it was leaking. I was calling all over for the contractors for prices and they all ranged over $1000. Also, other contractors were willing to charge extra fees and unnecessary county code. Walter was professional and very kind. He explained in details about the water heaters and purchasing county code is not necessary. He also showed up at home depot 7 in the morning and picked all the necessary parts and water heater. All I needed to do was to make the purchase. Also, he delivered water heater to my home AT NO ADDITIONAL COST. He finished the work in a timely manner and cleaned up well. I am REALLY satisfied with his service. Walter is going to my plumber and I am going to introduce him to my friends and neighbours. His labour cost is very affordable and reasonable compare to other contractors. I was able to save hundreds of dollars in labour cost. Overall you will never regret hiring Hi solution and Walter is the guy. He is a licensed contractor.

I couldn't be happier with the work Mr. Rema did in regards to replacing my water heater. He replaced the water heater the same day that Home Depot delivered it to my home, even though it was a Saturday. He charged exactly what he said he would. He literally charged me half what another company quoted me. I was so pleased with the work he did, I asked for a cost to replace an outdoor spicket, I had him replaced it that same day too. A+ all the way. I can't thank you enough.

We're so happy with the work that My Construction Services did for us! They were able to come out to install our new hot water heater on the same day that we started our search on Thumbtack. And they gave us the exact hot water heater that we were wanting.

I did a bathroom remodel. I did the demo, but he put in the new tub (which required moving the water heater out of the way), and did the shower and floor tile, fixed the walls, added insulation to the walls and the pipe (a HUGE DEAL to me! Since that is an outer wall and is always freezing). He was ALWAYS there when he said that he would be, which is always a great start to any project! He worked with me through several snafus with the materials (all my fault), and was willing to help with pretty much everything. He was always easy to reach, either by phone or by email. His worksmanship was high quality, and he made sure that everything looked completely professional and well done. He did a great job and I would definitely use him again!

My water heater died yesterday and I needed it replaced ASAP. I know a lot of people in the HVAC/Plumbing business, but none were able to provide same day service for this at a reasonable rate. I spoke with Joshua for the first time around 11AM Friday and a brand new water heater was installed by 5pm. That's a very high level of customer support that's becoming increasingly uncommon! I highly recommend him for your project!

From Herb’s initial phone call, I had a good feeling about Nexgen. He was able to make an initial (and then follow up) diagnosis from pics I texted to him, so he was prepared for the appointment for which he was right on time. He and Freddie couldn’t have been nicer, even spot checking other HVAC stuff at no charge while the tankless water heater was being de-scaled (the job we originally reached out to them for). Will totally keep using them for annual upkeep and anything else that pops up. Highly, highly recommend!!!

I spoke to Jon about my pilot light on my water heater that kept going out. Since I dicovered the water heater should not be in a bathroom ( which voided my warranty), he explained why and since it is in a small closet suggested I leave the door open for the air to circulate! This light was going out everyday for the last 3 days. Following Jon's advice the pilot light has stayed lit! I didn't hire him for now, but will definitely contact him for jobs in the future! Thank you so much for your advice Jon, and saving me money!

Brian came in to replace the HVAC unit for a 1-bedroom condo, and had a colleague also replace the hot water heater. Overall, Brian was very responsive, came in and provided a very estimate and quote, and got the work done very quickly. The timeline for the project stretched out a little bit, but some of that was due to the requirements for the building exterior. Overall, excellent service and value, and took the time to make sure the job was done well.

Dave and his team were great. I had a new energy efficient hybrid water heater put in. He was prompt and his labor $ was reasonable. I ordered the tank and had it delivered. I needed an expansion tank and misc parts that he so graciously went out to get for me. They cleaned up nicely before they left and also went over how to work the new water heater with me.

Even though I didnt actually have work done but had Kenny come to the house to give me a quote to descale my tankless heater , he was so honest and professional that he showed me a video and walked me thru the entire process since it didnt require a specialist to complete. That is commendable. I will look for him first next time I need to get a plumbing expert for my home.

I highly recommend Pope Plumbing. John was great from our very first interaction. He was very responsive to all of my water heater inquiries which I greatly appreciate. We had a few challenges with the installation of my water heater due to the design of my utility closet. Despite this, he definitely above and beyond to make sure I was happy with the water heater installation, which I am. Thank you, thank you, thank you, John for everything! : )

Fast and friendly service. Water tested on a Thursday, and Thursday the following week the install of our water softener was completed. They do very professional work and make sure their customers are okay with how the pipes and electric will run for hookup. I will be a returning customer for my tankless water heater when I'm ready.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
