My review is overdue as we had the work completed a few weeks ago but wanted to leave high marks for the EBRR team. Our office needed redesigning and installation of new drywall as well as mold treatment from the water damage. Everything went on time and smoothly. First, Ed came to assess the property and then sent me a proposal for the work to be completed. The scheduling was "sort of easy" to work with, when you want o hire reputable companies expect them to be busy and have a timeframe of 1-2 weeks. The team manager, Luis had the men arrive early every day, clean and professional (the cleaned up after them selves every day)! It was a pleasure working with EBRR Property Cleanup on this project and Ed, please tell Luis that he was a blessing to work with!

David and his team, Anthony and Gerardo, were outstanding in all areas of the change out of my split system heating and air conditioning unit. Anthony arrived early the morning after I called to get the measurements and explain my options and David had me a quote by early afternoon. The team arrived the next morning and were courteous, efficient, and worked exceptionally hard to get everything done correctly. I am extremely happy with the work and will recommend Supreme Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning to family and friends without reservation.

Logan was extremely professional in diagnosing the issue with our air conditioning, after several others had given us misinformation. Tristan ended up replacing our very old system at a very reasonable price and the crew were extremely quick and efficient at installing it. Tristan even went out of his way to make a follow up visit on Mothers Day to help us out with a faulty thermostat. We can't fault the standard of service and friendly professionalism in any way - we would certainly call on Logan / Tristan again and recommend them fully to others.

An air conditioner at a rental unit that I own quit working. Gomez came out the next morning first thing at 8 a.m. The diagnosis was not good. Both the heat pump and the compressor needed to be completely replaced. Gomez gave me an excellent price about half of what the big air conditioner companies charge. Gomez completed the work the same day to an excellent level of satisfaction. I will surely use Gomez for any air conditioning work but I ever need to do in the future.

Climate Pro was a lifesaver when our air conditioning unit stopped working five days before settlement on the sale of our house. We contacted the company with which we had a maintenance contract as well as Baltimore Gas and Electric and the soonest either could replace the unit was two weeks. Kevin Creel and Climate Pro Mechanical replaced the unit in three days. Not only were they efficient and professional but they were very reasonable in price.

I used Ray for the first time to perform a maintenance service on my HVAC system which also includes a whole house humidifier and an air purifying system. He responded immediately to my call, was courteous, pleasant and professional. Ray demonstrated a great deal of skill and knowledge. He did a thorough inspection and explained the work he was doing. He also took the time to vacuum out the unit which had begun to accumulate dust. His charge for the service was reasonable. I also appreciated the fact that he was respectful of my time and arrived promptly as scheduled. That meant that I didn't have to wait around for the standard 2 hour window. I plan to call on Ray from now on to service my HVAC unit and I highly recommend him.

I had a HVAC system with no cold air output. The outdoor unit was located on the roof of my condo bldg, accessible only through a small attic crawl space. Brian arrived promptly, and very quickly identified my unit, diagnosed the problem and replaced the defective part. I had cold air again within 30 minutes.

Winning with SCC!!! That should be these guys slogan. I've never been happier with getting service. I didn't have heat and my furnace was blowing cold air. I was trying to reset my pilot light and couldn't get it to light again. Gave these guys a try and I couldn't be happier. I worked with John Jackson and he was very PROFESSION, KNOWLEDGEABLE, and great to work with. After easily lighting the pilot light he listened to every concern I had and worked on each one till everything was in perfect working order. He listened patiently to everything and I felt assured every step was done in the best way. After the service was done, I felt like I didn't just have a new service provider but I great friend as well. John was just a great guy and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these guys for your HVAC needs. Great work John. Thanks again.

I highly recommend Nexgen Home Services, a company that exemplifies customer service. For me, honesty is the most important trait when selecting a company to perform any type of work at your home. Nexgen was professional, on-time, and they diagnosed my air conditioning issue and fixed it the same day. I was provided with up front and fair pricing, and the whole time I knew that my interests were considered. I will now be using Nexgen for all of my future HVAC needs, and if you are reading this, you should too.

My 2.5 story house dates from 1920 or so and has steam heat with radiators. The lack of existing duct work presented a real challenge for Hughes Mechanical, but they totally rose to the occasion. My initial consultant, Brad, did not appear fazed by the job at all and immediately suggested a high-velocity system for the top two floors, a conventional system for the first floor, and a mini-split for the one room off the back of the house built on a cement slab and thus unreachable by the other two systems. The crew that came in, Billy, Eddie, Matt, Brian and others, was totally professional, did exactly what they said they would do, cleaned up after themselves, accommodated my schedule, and were a pleasure to have around for a couple of weeks. This was the only company from which I obtained an estimate that suggested anything other than a conventional system, which would have involved boxing in ducts all over the place. There is only one small place where Hughes was forced to put a duct outside the walls. As a bonus, Hughes gave me two new thermostats to control both the heat and air. I am super pleased with my air conditioning job!

Every technician that we have ever had is always on time and very fast in figuring out what is wrong with our air conditioning system. We have been using them for years but this past weekend our air stopped working right before we were having a Labor Day party. They were able to come right out and get it going again. Thanks Holtzople for saving the day!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
