I was very pleased with the professionalism, responsiveness and promptness in Ed Bilo calling me. We have an appointment for Friday, Sept. 14, 2018. I appreciate very much for his followup due to an error message sent him by Thumbtack implying that I had cancelled our appointment--which was not correct. I was so concerned that I called Mr. Bilo at 9pm tonight to make sure we still had an appointment on Friday. This is over and beyond professionalism that he answer the phone and was not upset.

I had a gas fireplace installed two years ago. Another contractor did the basic frame and sheetrock around the fireplace but didn't finish the job. Jenrri met with me in person to assessed the job and give a quote for the work. Jenrri was pleasant and professional and my two Westies both liked him. If they didn't like him I wouldn't have hired him. He said the front area around the firebox would need to have the sheetrock replaced with cement board. I was glad he knew this because not having the right materials could be a fire hazard. After meeting with him. I decided to hire him and planned for him to come Feb. 16-19, 2016 to do this job. He did this job with another worker named Melby. Jenrri and I had to buy materials from the store the first day, but Melby stayed and started working. He removed the sheetrock and also cut boards for the shiplap look I wanted on the upper front and sides of the fireplace. Jenrri and Melby completed cutting and installing about half of the boards the first day. They laid tile on the hearth and around the firebox. I had picked large tiles for the hearth and small tiles to go around the firebox. The small tiles took more time to cut and install. Some of the tile around the firebox doesn't lay completely flat because of the screws for the cement board and because the framing around the firebox wasn't level. If I had to pick again I would have picked larger tiles to go around the firebox. They would have been easier to install and wouldn't have shown that the firebox wasn't completely level. After the tile and boards were installed they painted all the boards and the two walls on each side of the fireplace. Then installed the mantle and touched up the painting. They did a very nice job cleaning up when the work was done and even put furniture and a rug back in place. They also completed the job on time. I am happy with my finished fireplace. It looks beautiful. Both Jenrri and Melby work hard and do a good job. Maybe if Jenrri did the whole project instead of finishing someone else's work it would have been perfect. I would hire him again and I would recommend him to others.

I had a water leak from the second floor and the first floor ceiling dry wall had to be repaired. Among several quotes in Thumbtack, David's was the highest (the most expensive), but he has the most and best reviews, so I selected him. Although he submitted the highest quote, it was reasonable, I thought. David was very quick in responding. I asked him if he would work on weekend, thankfully he didn't mind coming on Sunday. The appointment was 2 pm on Sunday, he sent me a text message to inform me that he would be late. I greatly appreciated the way he communicated. He came alone and worked quietly, but looked very professional. The way he worked demonstrated that all the reviews that I saw in Thumbtack about him were genuine. He kept doing to perfection. After all the work got done, he noticed a small area was kind of bulging up. Then without any hesitation, he removed the portion and re-did the entire process until he (and I) was totally satisfied. It took more than 3 hours due to several rounds of coating and drying process, but he was working really hard without hurrying up. I give him 5-star review without any hesitation and strongly recommend him.

I hired Antonio, of Renaissance Restoration, to do several projects. They included: 1) rebuilding the curb in my shower that was installed improperly by a different contractor; 2) Finishing a half-bath remodel that included refinishing and painting the drywall after they had be damaged from wallpaper removal, installing a vanity including plumbing and trim; 3) Repairing water-damaged hardwood floors and refinishing hardwood floors in the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, hall and stairway; 4) Expanding the kitchen entrance by 2 inches, repairing and refinishing the drywall and wood floor. I was at first skeptical to hire one person to complete all these tasks due to the variety of skills required. Fortunately, Antonio had all the skills necessary to complete the job expertly and timely. His attention to detail and vast experience with carpentry and contracting work in general proved to be invaluable. The end result of each project was even better than I had expected. Needless to say I would hire Antonio again for my next project.

We absolutely loved working with José and his team to tile our basement floor with ceramic wood-looking tile, expose a brick wall, and install new toilet and a wall-mounted sink. He works FAST and within budget. Extra things we needed done were added at very reasonable extra expense ($40-60 to repair an unexpected drywall hole behind a mirror). His team does beautiful work, and José made sure every bit of trash or demo material was taken away. They also went above and beyond to make things look nice. For example, I don't think they charged me extra when they plastered around our baseboards and it looks soooo much better! They also patched a little hole left by a past electrician's job. They took extra good care of our space as if it was their own home. We also like that he respected our desire to further finish our space ourselves ( we are ok with doing our own painting). I can't say enough good things. We will definitely hire José and Brandon Contracting for our next job.

Hugo and his team refinished 765 square feet of white oak floors that had carpet epoxy and termite damage. When they were done (two day job) you could not tell which boards had been damaged and replaced. In addition, the stain was beautiful. They did great work and I would highly recommend him and his team. On a side note, the polyurethane was unbearable and even seeped into our fridge, our cabinets, and on clean dishes, so be mindful of your food and make sleeping arrangements for a few days and air out your house.

After meeting with four different general contractors, Mr. Marvin Guzman with Baiza Construction, Inc showed his best attitude to take part on a serious complete home improvement we had for our 1956 home. He didn't only provided a quick estimate, But time frame to complete and over all his price. My project was based on a full 2 bathrooms remodeling, plaster walls removal/replacement, insulation, plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodeling and about 2500 square foot of hardwood floor installation. My best recommendation to future hires and families of his great quality work. My contract worth 86k were put on the best hands.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

Overall, the laminate floor installation was a good experience. I am still disappointed with a piece of laminate that is not firmly locked in with the surrounding laminate flooring. There is a possibility that the subfloor in that area is uneven. If so, I would have expected to be told about the possibility of this problem before the laminate floor was installed. I also returned home to find a transition piece of wood from the hallway to the bathroom that did not match the laminate flooring. I was told that I was not charged for this; however, it is not what I expected. I was very pleased with the price of the project. Just be sure to ask about the consequences of installing laminate floors on a sub floor that has imperfections or it will be a waste of your money and you will most likely be stuck with the end result.

Marvin showed up at my house and provided a quote that was fair and in line with other quotes I had. He was helpful and provided required options. It took him much longer to complete his project compared to what he promised me earlier. The timing was not a huge concern for me but it did prolonged the project. His crew fixed the area where the work was not done properly. The biggest complain I have with him is around cleaning of the floor after he completed his job. There were paint stains everywhere on the hardwood floors. I contacted him to send someone to remove the paint stains from the floor but he is completely ignoring my phone calls and texts.

Had a great experience with Peter, I needed my floors finished because my other flooring company that I hired who was a larger retailer flaked on me. I told them my timelines and that I needed to have three rooms finished on my main level to complete the entire first floor in hardwood before company came. The guy showed up late on the first day and said that I had too much furniture and that it would take three days to complete the job, originally when the estimator came out I was told only one day to finish. I have a fair amount of stuff but not more than the average family. So right off the bat my project with them ran very close to my deadline. They (Flooring America of Woodbridge) started the job on Tuesday and I needed work done by close of business Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday the guys came out to do the work, they completed about 480 of 600 square feet. They didn't put up any of the trim or put back the furniture. I only had about 120 square feet to finish, and I found Peter's Flooring on thumbtack and contacted him Wednesday night because when the guys left they said they wouldn't be back until Monday. After calling their manager and getting nowhere I googled flooring companies and found thumbtack. Peter came out Thursday afternoon. Worked up a very reasonable price and scheduled his installer Mark to come out and finish everything else on Friday. Friday I was planning on having the job done and I had to go to work by 9 and Peter assured me his guys would be there. I guess they had to take their trash from the previous job to the dump in the morning and it took longer than expected, at 8:30 Peter sent me a text and told me his guys wouldn't be there until 9:30 am. I told him that put me in a bind because I had to take too much leave so far for this project and he was at my house 15 minutes later so I could go to work and he let the guys in. I came home to a clean house, work finished and ready for my company for the weekend. I read lots of reviews for Flooring America before I hired them and felt pretty comfortable with the staff and everything up until they had my money and I was at their mercy. I understood my furniture would be an issue. I have big expensive pieces that some of needed to be broken down and taken apart but their estimator who came out assured me it wouldn't be a problem. As a small contractor and dealing directly with the owner for the entirety of my job Peter out performed a larger company who clearly had support staff to help handle this type of job. He's reliable and reasonable on his prices. I've hired him to do my stairs going up to the bedrooms as well as the hallway between the bedrooms. My total on that project was about 2400 but well worth it with his professionalism and talent of the installer Mark. I definitely recommend as a hire.

After we moved into our newly renovated home, we found out we had a HUGE leak in our basement. The leak was causing mold on the entire basement and dry walls. Our contractor hired someone to do the waterproofing during the renovation however we quickly realized we had to call a professional. We found MJ HOMES SERVICES & FLOOD RESTORATION on the internet. We called about 5 different companies and had MJ HOME SERVICES be the only ones that showed up on time (the same day we called). Their quote was affordable than the other quotes however it was worth every dime. MJ HOMES employees were extremely knowledgeable. They immediately found the issue and started working within 2 days. The work was both internal and external. Workers showed up at 8am and left at 7pm. They were quiet and worked clean. In addition, they had to dig in our basement and replace drywall. We didn't even feel we had construction in the house. The basement is dry and we are extremely happy.

Cristian and Luis were responsive, reliable and hard-working. I had to have a bathroom remodel finished very quickly and they were able to start immediately and completed quickly. Also, the estimate was very reasonable. I had asked for some extra work and they were accommodating and when the total bill came, they were spot on with the actual cost compared to the estimate and the extra work added to the bill was very fair. It’s difficult to find a good dependable handyman that you feel comfortable working with, and I found this in C&L. I already have other projects with which, I will be asking for their services. The work they did for me was drywall and tiling of floor and walls of a full bathroom and extensive drywall repairs in other areas of the home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
