I have worked with dozens of web designers and graphic artists from around the world, people I hired mainly from guru.com. If you took the measure of talent present in all these people, then put it all together in one person, you would have the equivalent of the talent present in Barbie's little finger. You can't compare the skill in this woman with anyone else. She is in a class by herself. First of all, I live in California and she lives in Maryland. I talked to her once on the phone, but mainly just through my thoughts that came out of my passion to heal the sick as a doctor. I told her I wanted a brochure that would reflect the look of an apothecary from the 1800's with the beautiful graphics possible from the jet age digital world. I swear the lady read my mind. She started putting together ideas so fast, and so good that I thought I was dealing with a master of art, like the best of the best, whose talent was in a league all her own. She is better than excellent. Like meeting all the contestants in a Miss Universe contest, but there is one more beautiful than them all who falls in love with you. You score big time. She is so fast that I was up at 3 AM for four days in a row just trying to keep up with her. The project just kept getting better and better each day. I looked at her work in amazement. Like this was my soul mate of graphic art who delivered a product beyond what I could ever ask or think. There is no one like her. She deserves all the money in my bank account because the money I am going to make, and the people I am going to impress with the brochure she created for me, is going to make me rich. Well, my God will make me rich, but he sends these angels to do his will that make you better and happier just because her life touched my life in an extraordinary way. You have the princess of graphic art here in the person of this woman who will blow your mind with what she can do in Illustrator and Photoshop. I am already looking forward to the next project. I have been trying to put together the website of websites for three years. I have files upon files from all these losers from around the world, but watch Barbie take my ideas and create another masterpiece. That's what she will give you...a masterpiece that will help to put you over in your business...the right image, the right look, exactly what you need. I wouldn't waste my time writing this lengthy evaluation unless I was not completely, 100% satisfied with her work. I am the biggest fan of Barbie Harris on the earth. I found what I was looking for. Thank you Lord for my December Christmas present.

Laela designed a logo for my new business and I couldn't have been happier with both the result and the experience. I had ideas about what I wanted but really needed the input of an experienced graphic artist, and Laela gave it her all. This was a wonderful collaboration with someone who knows her stuff, is very talented, and I would work with again in a heartbeat. Thanks Laela!

Everyone who sees it admires and compliments Steve's web design for my online gallery (Vicky Arana Fine Art at rvaranafineart.com). Steve coordinated with photographer Brendan Mattingly and radically adapted a template web design to speed up the uploads of the huge picture files involved. He was pleasant in response to and quick to execute the improvements called for by a quality control professional who reviewed a late-version draft of the site. I get compliments on my art works every day and am delighted with the results of Steve's labors, especially about whatever he did to make my artistic presence on the Internet so huge! We have an understanding that he will be the one to do updates when they become compellingly necessary.

Joe recently designed a bicycle jersey as an apparel project for my company. Joe's work was quality, timely and professional. Communication was direct and consistent throughout the process including phone calls and emails, before, during, and after the design process. I would highly recommend Joe for his design work. Compared to other artists contracted for similar designs, Joe developed the final product much quicker and with no issues.

Rob Webber is sensational! He has been my Graphic Artist for 5 years now on my business www.barbarascookiepies/com. There is nothing he can't do! He has a keen eye, is quick (so fast) and economical for the quality of the work he does, His designs are intrusive and help break through the competitive clutter. He is so easy to work with. Creative, deadline -driven, budget conscious, and just easy to work with on each project. Formerly, Rob and I worked together in industry where he lead a staff of artists and did all advertising and promotional materials. I could go on and on. He also does fabulous Powerpoint presentations. If you want to speak to me about Rob please reach out at barb@barbarascookiepies.com. He is A+++++++++!

Heather has been an absolute joy to work with. I hired her onto my team and she has become one of my favorite artists to work with. She adheres to all deadlines, works within our brand standards, and is proactive when developing creative for every program and holiday. She also works incredibly well with the rest of the team (and by that I mean 120 team members) at the Mt. Washington store. I enjoy working with her so much that I exclusively contract her for personal artwork as well!

I can't begin to tell you how happy my husband and I are with the work that Ashley Spencer of Casart Coverings did for her. She was extremely professional, timely and pleasant to work with. But most importantly she was able to match our walls that had beautiful faux painting that we were originally worried could not be replicated. We had damage to our walls. They had been done before we moved into our house and we could not find the original artist. Ashley came in, said she could do it and not only is her work wonderful, you cannot tell where she did it. It is a perfect match. We would highly recommend Ashley. She is a true artist!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

    • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
    • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
    • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

How much does it cost to create a logo?

Logo design is an important part of your company’s brand development. More than an image with text and color, a logo communicates the tone and personality of your company to your potential customers. Hiring a graphic designer with an appealing portfolio and quality reviews is a solid start to creating a winning logo design. The cost to create a logo can depend on how in-depth the marketing and design services you request are. Designers can create one logo in multiple formats (horizontal, vertical, etc.) to fit both your website and social media platforms, they can create a variety of designs for clients to select from, or they can create multiple logos for one client who needs branding for more than one venture. Logos may be text-only, text and image, or image-only. Many designers and design firms charge by the hour for their services, while other companies offer packages bundled with design services. Here are some examples of cost:

    • National average cost to hire a logo designer: $170-$250.
    • Average hourly rate for a freelance marketing consultant: about $150.
    • Tiered pricing for logo design packages from one firm:
      • Package One: $200 for three logo concepts, three rounds of revision, and a variety of format and color end designs.
      • Package Two: $350 for 10 logo concepts, unlimited rounds of revision, and a variety of format and color end designs.
      • Package Three: $550 for everything included in the Package Two, plus business card design, letterhead design, social media graphics and an email signature.
      • Package Four: $850 for everything in the Package Three, plus custom brand guidelines, which outline a strategy for creating a consistent branding in the client’s business.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

    • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
    • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
    • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
