Lewis Piano Movers went above and beyond working very hard to move our baby grand into our apartment. Even when our freight elevator went down during the move they were very patient and understanding while working to find another way to get our piano to the 4th floor. As someone who has worked in the customer service industry for almost 20 years I have seen the best and the worst of customer service. The gentlemen at Lewis Piano Movers are at the top of my list. They were very professional during the entire process and took the utmost care while working in our home. Plus, all of this while always staying upbeat and positive, even while moving our 500+ pound piano. I have already recommend them to another friend and look forward to recommending them to many more. Thanks to all the guys at Lewis Piano Movers! We love our new piano and couldn't have done it without you.

Khalild and Dom were absolutely fantastic. Very professional, energetic, accommodating and pleasant. Our move ran late due to a back up earlier in the day (that was not the moving companies fault), they did not complain once as we ran into late evening. I would strongly recommend not only this company but the men specifically- moving is never fun, but they made it easy!

My family and I couldn't have asked for a better experience than what Zebna Movers provided. From the initial in-home estimate to ultimate delivery of our household goods, the entire Zebna team provided top-notch service at an extremely competitive price. El Ibra, our moving liaison, was prompt, respectful, and truly did everything in his power to ensure that our last-minute move from Virginia to Florida went absolutely seamless. The actual moving team showed up ahead of schedule and worked tirelessly and efficiently to pack our entire 4+ bedroom home in a matter of hours. Since I was forced to remain in Virginia and finalize the sale of our house, the moving crew then traveled to Florida and went out of their way to make absolutely certain my pregnant wife had everything she needed; the team was comprised of genuinely considerate people. We honestly could not have accomplished this move without Zebna's exquisite service. Having requested quotes and meeting representatives from a number of moving companies, I am absolutely certain we made the right choice in selecting Zebna Movers.

I had a wonderful experience with Rose and team from Great Nation Movers. From start to finish it was a smooth process. I appreciated the In-home visit for the consultation. That's really what made me decide to choose Great Nation over other moving companies. On moving day, the team arrived to find me overwhelmed with all going on. The entire team jumped in right away to finish the packing and start the loading. I could not have been more pleased with the job they did. Pick up and delivery was smooth and flawless. I could not have been more pleased with the job they did. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

I have a 4 year old and I'm currently pregnant. My husband is constantly busy with grad school work and his brother who lives with us works a lot of 12 hour shifts. Basically, I needed help moving things out of shipping container that's sort of like having a storage unit at your home. I had to go through boxes and tubs to figure out what needed to be placed in a garage or in my home. These guys did this service for me considering that it wasn't their standard way of doing business. They were very professional, patient and understanding. They both listened to my needs and helped me obtain my goal. One of the side requests I had was to make sure that my holiday decorations were put in the garage last and that they left me with enough room for my dogs to be put up out of the cold at night. Thank you for your fast and efficient work. You guys answered my request first and I'm glad I hired you!!

Provided packing and moving. Though because of how things were arranged, I did most of the packing so I would be able to find things easier when it came time to unpack. The two guys were very prompt on arriving and got started almost right away. They were very careful with my larger and heavier items and took extra care to watch out for the walls and surroundings. At the drop off there was a little mix up on which items were going to the new apartment and which needed to be taken to the storage unit, but it was all resolved within a few minutes.

My experience was very positive. Brandon did a great job assembling my IKEA sleeper sofa. He showed me how it worked and he disposed of all the packing materials. Plus, his bid was much more affordable that some of the other Thumbtack vendors. I would definitely use 1st Home Professional for future jobs. Highly recommended.

Found Tim on thumtack. After getting appointment set, I had to leave town for a couple of weeks. That did not effect Tim's stride, He stayed in touch letting me know he was ready when I was. He assisted us in finding a truck at a reasonable price. On the day he was early and I was late, again it did not break his stride. We were moving a 10x15 storage unit of loosely stacked articles to a 10x10 unit at a more reasonably priced storage facility. Again that did not brake his stride. He with one helper, that he left in his dust at getting the stuff stacked. He stacked the boxes tight and there was know problem getting the articles in the unit. He treats your articles as his. Tim is personable, professional, efficient and affordable. In fact at this time I have scheduled him to take the boxes out of the unit for me to look for some important papers and later in the day return and replace it in the unit. I trust Tim with all my moving needs. He also does several other jobs including drywall and furniture assembling. Thanks to Tim, be using you again. If you don't use Time for you needed services, big mistake.

Had to move all of my stuff from point A to point B. The movers arrived early and were ready to work despite me not being 100% ready. They did the move in exactly 1 hour which is insane since when I first moved it took another moving company over 2 hours. The crew didn't damage a thing and everything arrived at my new place just as it was. Great movers and I'll be using them in the future for sure.

Rosie Reds Cleaning moved the contents of my storage facility to my house and down the stairs in this blistering heat. Brian and his team did an excellent job, professional, efficient and friendly. Moving many boxes and furniture down narrow stairs while never hitting a wall! That gives you an idea how good they are!

What did I like about them? Everything! We hired them to help us finish packing and moving the chaotic remnants of a pack and move from three days earlier. The first movers didn’t finish. VKH Movers came in, got right to work, were super cooperative and friendly, and were available with less than 12 hours notice! They went above and beyond, carrying trash to the curb, bagging mattresses, and I wish I had hired them first!

Absolutely amazing moving company! I was worried no one would take such a small job on short notice. However Adrian of Checkmate Professional Services came to our rescue. Adrian arrived 5 minutes early with all of his equipment. He was very professional and asked questions to make sure he was doing everything to our specifications. He helped us move and setup a 350lb outdoor fountain. My wife and I are very grateful for his company. We highly recommend them.

This moving company is the only moving company I will use for ANY of my future moves. The movers were very polite and professional. They made me feel secure that my things were being handled with care and once we arrived to our destination, they moved my things in quickly and properly and put my bed and dining room table together.

I hired M&M Moving & Hauling to move larger pieces of furniture out of my grandparents' home. There were a couple of issues with the scheduling where they had miscalculated the time needed for the move scheduled just before mine, but Marvin was up front about it and worked with me to find a mutually agreeable time for my move. There was also a problem with how they placed a couple of the items within the storage unit and I think they were just hot and tired by that point, but we were able to resolve the issue. As I had items moved into a storage unit, I don't know how all of them fared from the move, but they seemed to do a pretty good job with packing it in the truck and making sure items that I wasn't able to wrap were covered during the drive. They also provided a very competitive flat rate that did not contain any hidden fees. I really liked that I knew exactly what I would be paying, but it did take a couple of messages to figure out what was included in the cost. Overall, they did a good job and did it quickly and efficiently. I would hire them again.

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
