They are very friendly, efficient and professional. Only spending 4 hours to move my heavy two bedroom from gaithersburg to ellicott city. The only drawback is that they charge me 4.5 hours for 4 hour and 5 min labor. But given they are so efficient, it is acceptable.

Alex and Sergei were awesome and came ready to work. I was moving one bedroom to another one bedroom 12 miles away. They arrived on time and finished well under 3 hours...2 hours and 10 minutes to be exact (in my opinion, I had a lot of stuff. heavy too). It was 97 degrees with a heat index over 100 and that did not stop them from putting in hard work. The fact that the worked their ass off is why I will always use this company for any future move and I will recommend them to everyone. Great prices and definitely you get your money worth. Watching these guys take my 200lb dresser and load it up so impressed especially when they left the drawers in. 😮 Again, use this company. You won't be disappointed

Baku Moving did all the work during my relocation from DC to NY. I had no problems with them whatsoever because they demonstrated a high level of diligence and expertise. They are highly regarded in DC, and for good reasons. They respect you and your things and will always deliver on their promise. I suggest them to everybody.

My move was a breeze thanks to Max & his workers. The moving crew clearly had a ton of experience and were very careful with my items (they even put down mats on my hardwood floors so they wouldn't scuff the floor when they brought in items). I would absolutely recommend this group.

Lewis Piano Movers were awesome to work with in moving my baby grand piano from one location to the other. They removed my old upright piano and worked patiently with me on placement of my baby grand. Top notch, super nice guys! Totally 5 star service.

The guys were a bit late due to traffic- but they kept me well informed. Khalil and Dom did a ton of work moving all our boxes and they wrapped all of our furniture superbly! Nothing damaged or destroyed in the move. It took longer than the estimated 3 hours (we had a lot of boxes), but the guys took on the extra time without complaint. I would definitely book A-1 again and ask for these guys. Plus, i got the best rate with them!

I am writing this review to highly recommend the services of Great Nation Moving, and in particular the great work of the moving crew. This review represents my experience - your mileage may vary, but if my experience is any indication, you should have full confidence in the performance of Great Nation Moving should you be planning a move to wherever you are going. The coordination of the exact day of the move was a bit of a challenge since getting a response from the closing company on the exact day of the close was a challenge. Finally confirmed, Rose and William were flexible in helping to make it happen since the timing I believe did not work out perfectly on their end. Mimi was helpful with the finalization of the bill. The move in went quickly and everything was placed where it needed to be. I was able to go about my business and run errands in the meantime. The entire move took about 6 hours and the entire crew was very professional and respectful towards our belongings. It was clear they took ownership of the move and treated things as though they were their own. To say they exceeded my expectations is an understatement. I would highly recommend Great Nation Moving to anyone requiring a move - whether across town or to another state. As I mentioned, this review will be updated briefly once my container arrives. As I mentioned to a gentleman that contacted me from their home office to gather feedback - an excellent step in their process to close the loop and elicit feedback. It shows Great Nation is very sensitive to their customer's experience and this indicates their customer-centric approach to moving, something I've never witnessed (and I've moved numerous times in my life). Great Nation Moving, simply put, will provide you peace of mind in what can sometimes be a stressful experience.

We hired SkyRide to move our one bedroom apartment and I was concerned because this was not an easy move. We were moving to a 4th floor apartment with no elevator and very narrow star cases.... It was also the hottest day of the year! Felt like 109 outside!! These guys made it look easy. I was amazed at how hard the two guys worked in such intense heat. We were in our new place in 2.5 hours!! This included moving all big furniture, boxes and the dismantling/reassembly of a queen bed and dining room table. I would highly recommend Fred and his team. They were nothing short of OUTSTANDING!

I had a terrific experience with your ProMovers. Terrence and his team did an excellent job moving us from DC to Atlanta. Terrence met with me ahead of the move and provided me with a quote based on my specific needs, no hidden costs or extra charges. Communication with him before during and after the move was great as he is super responsive. One of the great advantages of hiring Terrence is that you know he will be the one packing, loading, driving and unloading at your destination. One thing that really impressed me was that Terrence stayed with us after unloading helping us get set in our new home and only left after he confirmed our satisfaction with everything that had to do with the move. Hands down the best moving experience I ever had!

Found Tim on thumtack. After getting appointment set, I had to leave town for a couple of weeks. That did not effect Tim's stride, He stayed in touch letting me know he was ready when I was. He assisted us in finding a truck at a reasonable price. On the day he was early and I was late, again it did not break his stride. We were moving a 10x15 storage unit of loosely stacked articles to a 10x10 unit at a more reasonably priced storage facility. Again that did not brake his stride. He with one helper, that he left in his dust at getting the stuff stacked. He stacked the boxes tight and there was know problem getting the articles in the unit. He treats your articles as his. Tim is personable, professional, efficient and affordable. In fact at this time I have scheduled him to take the boxes out of the unit for me to look for some important papers and later in the day return and replace it in the unit. I trust Tim with all my moving needs. He also does several other jobs including drywall and furniture assembling. Thanks to Tim, be using you again. If you don't use Time for you needed services, big mistake.

I hired HaulProz to move from a 1BR basement apartment to a 1BR high rise in the same area. They provided a flat rate based on 3 hours labor, which seemed to be at the lower range of most quotes I received. While the service was not as comprehensive as what I have gotten when my work paid for a full-service move, they did a good job for a reasonable price. PROS: - The flat rate really sets them apart from the competition for me. The peace of mind of not worrying about movers running up the clock is worth it. - The movers had a professional attitude and arrived on time - No scratches / damage - They were true to their word about the flat fee. They ended up working 3.5 hours but just charged me for the original 3 hours - They agreed to haul away some junk for a very reasonable additional charge CONS: - I would not say they were especially quick or proactive in doing anything that was not explicitly spelled out. For instance I was hoping they would disassemble/reassemble our king-sized bed, but this would have taken a lot more time so we did it ourselves. - I was unable to contact the initial respondent via phone, which made it difficult to arrange at the last minute before a holiday weekend. I had to call someone else at the company to follow up on the thumbtack quote. - They were not familiar with the procedure for arranging parking in DC, and were unable to provide some of the vehicle details required for a police truck parking permit (fortunately parking was available on our street when they came) - The movers got lost on the way to the new apartment and did not call to ask directions. Eventually, I called them and found they were waiting in the parking lot. OVERALL: The move went fine and the flat rate was great, so I would hire them again. But next time I would take more time to spell out in greater detail what the exact requirements of the move are so that it is clear to all what is and is not included. Also be sure to think through all of the logistical steps that are required (parking, elevator, loading dock) etc.

The crew did a great job of moving the whole town house in 12 hours. Some i had boxed and some they did. I had provided the boxes and some tape. They brought blankets, shrink wrap etc. They did a great job of moving all the items without any damage. However, lost a star when they had put the bed together in one of the rooms they left it in the middle of the room and had not understood that i had told them to set the bed near the wall. Only 1 person understood the instruction i provided while the other 2 had put boxes in the rooms that were not supposed to be. I will make sure that the movers understand English instructions of what i am saying next time if i hire them again.

Greg was wonderful to work with. He was very upfront with all fees during the quote and continued to be reasonable throughout the job. He arrived 45 minutes before the start time and was very motivated to get the job done quickly. He knew what he was doing. He was training a brand new partner during my move (only labor and packing a storage container), which may have slowed it down, but he subtracted an hour from the total time. Overall, I am very happy with my experience working with this company.

I just needed some help to remove dead trees, shrubbery, and leaves from my yard. Not only did Adrian help with the labor part, but he also provided some great ideas to help us clear the yard more efficiently. He said they also do cleaning and organizing and I plan on hiring them to help organize and clean my basement.

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
